Sounds like its in the interest of both parties to do a deal. Maybe have an incentive clause to give him second round money if he makes the roster this year or next.

Pay the guy. Those are impressive numbers. One guy in Toronto wrote an article about him just before this year's draft stating that he made Stamkos look better than he was by being such a physical presence on his line. He continued in the article that the Islanders got a steal in the 08 draft and that Martin could develop into a Clark Gillies type wing for the Isles.

And he wants to play for the Islanders. Garth, give him a decent contract, because the team is certainly not spending too much elsewhere.

I am a 17 year season ticket holder who is getting tired of the team's unwillingness to spend.

wow, getting pushed around by a 5th round pick. Just the kinda crap Garth needs. NHL players are definately over valueing themselves as of late. Players like Chris Neil getting ridiculous contracts for 4 goals a year. This kid better be worth the money if they sign it, but to be even picked for the NHL and to be so unappreciative of the fact that you were even selected to try an extort the organization. I dunno, seems kind of selfish to me, but who knows, may be worth it.

Give him a 2-year (trial by fire) contract at $900,000 with incentives. Bonuses like scoring 20, 25, or 30 goals along with totaling 45, 50, or 60 points per season.

I don't get it, he was drafted in the 5th rd, then because he had good numbers after he was drafted he wants to be paid like a 1st rounder? Don't alot of players put up good numbers after they are drafted?

To continue my thought, the Rangers drafted Evgeny Grachev in the 3rd rd & that was considered a steal, then he put up 40 goals & 40 assists in his 1st year in juniors. Should he now be expected to be paid like he was the #1 overal pick from his draft year?

Matt Martin DOES NOT need to sign this year. The Islanders still have his rights for another year. He was a 2008 pick. They still have his rights.

You are correct, Michael. The article said,“if Martin isn’t signed when camp ends, he must return to juniors and go back into the draft.” However, this is just an error. Martin will not go back into the draft if he is not signed in the next few days, he was only drafted one flippin year ago! That isnt how things work.

I would think he should. The Islanders don't have one player on their roster that's as good as Grachev. Grachev would be the captain of the islanders if they had him. The Islanders are a joke. Gaborik will be captain.

No, the joke is on the Rangers for signing another whining crybaby who does not have the heart to produce a winning hockey team. Yeah, that's who I want on my team--a guy like Gaborik who gets his coach and GM fired and then abandons his team after having one injury-shortened season after another. He's just the kind of loser the Rangers should have for a captain.

And I would take JT, Kyle, Josh, or Streit over Grachev anyday.

BTW, Martin strikes me as the kind of guy who would be the perfect LW for JT on the second line. Take a look at what Cashman and Hodge did alongside Espo for Boston. That could be Hunts and Martin with JT.

Gaborik is as stiff and your boy Grachev can't carry Taveras' jock. He's Zherdov reincarnated. Okposo is better tahn any Ranger forward.

Grachev??? He's played as many NHL games as you and I. Lets not get caught up in the statistics game, because Tavares would win that category. If you are ok with another underachieving, no heart wuss euro as your captain then by all means, go for the scoring euro. But if you're really a rangers fan, and you are picking Grachev over someone like Dubinsky then you know nothing. N American hockey wins championships in the NHL. If flashy scoring was the key, the caps and thrashers would be winning cups, as Ovechkin and Kovalchuk are some of the most dynamic offensive players in the game.

Troll... even though Grachev looks like he might be a good player, and is certainly a good prospect. He has never played a single NHL game yet. He isn't better then the equipment manager let alone a single player on any team, until he proves he can play in the NHL. Watch some hockey before talking. lol
