Will Snow stand on head or get beaten in draft?

Full story: Newsday

There are stark parallels between being a National Hockey League goalie and a general manager, Garth Snow says.

The former NHLer who said the isles should draft Hedman was Butch Goring. He was of the opinion that defense wins championships, and that the isles already had some good young talent up front. You can make a case either way, but the bottom line is that the islanders havent had an elite sniper/50 goal scorer since ziggy palffy. Tavares broke Gretzkys OHL record in points........im pretty sure he fits into that category.
Break Gretzky's NHL records and I'll be a believer...
BTW - Tavares' Junior team is losing 2 games to one against Windsor in the semi-finals.

I understand that part but the scouts have not compared him to Gretzky. He's playing with and against different players in a different era. Specifically, something common to Gretzky, Lemieux, LaFontaine(for that matter), Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Heatley, and Kovalchuk (among others) is that they all have/had superior skating skills. Every scouting report that I have read has always said that Tavares' skating is average. In other players there has been a sharp decline in production from minors to NHL when the skating ability wasn't up to par.
So... I repeat the question... Is there actually a legitimate reason to compare Tavares to Crosby?
The reason why any comparison was probably made, is because they are both Canadian players, and the Canadian media LOVES to write about "their own". Remember last year........they made out Stamkos to be "the next, next one".

The OHL record to me, isn't some bs stat. There are a lot of NHL greats, that have come thru the "O", and yet this kid has the record. Even if his team loses, that doesnt take away from the fact that this kid has raw talent, and can be the goal scorer the islanders have desperately needed, and been unable to aquire via trade.

And then once he was on a southeastern US team they were so eager to throw a ridiculously premature "bust" label on him!

I have more hockey knowledge in my pinkie as Wang does in his whole body. Wang let Milbury ruin the team.
I am heartbroken by the team.

Southeastern US team??? The reason they called him a bust, is because he was so hyped up, and he only scored 23 goals. Not saying its an accurate statement........i just dont feel he's not getting his due because he plays on a southeastern us team.

ONLY 23 goals??? He was the #3 rookie in goals (and #2 had only 1 more goal than he did.) He scored 16 of those goals in his final 26 games, too. Stamkos is going to be just fine.

And sorry but I really do think where he plays was definitely a factor in peoples premature negativity.

I think you're probably both right about this. Much of that negativity did die down when he settled in and started scoring consistently in those last 26 games.

YES 23 GOALS....!!!! He was drafted NUMBER ONE overall, and will not win the calder. I dont care when he scored his goals, the fact remains he did not produce the numbers to equal all the hype. Im not agreeing with any of the negativety, because Tampa has ZERO defense which was the reason for their poor season, and not a reflection of Stamkos' talent. If you think that playing in Tampa plays a factor in anyones "pre mature negativity" (im still trying to figure this out) how is it that Lecavelier is regarded as one of the best players in the game? The Montreal Canadians sure expressed interest in aquiring a southeastern US player.

The Capitals are down 2 games to 1 against the Rangers. Alex Ovechkin is goalless after 3 games. If the Rangers win the series, does that mean that Ovechkin is not the best player in the game (by your rational)?

You think that bottomfeeder southeastern expansion teams are treated the same way as Canadian teams by the Canadian media. Feel however you want, I simply dont agree. But why are you getting so bent over it?

Last I checked Vinny Lecavelier plays for the same team as Steve Stamkos......a southeastern US team. The Montreal media was ALL OVER vinny this year, and praise him as if he's the next coming.
I dont see where you are going, other than just to argue for the sake of arguing.

If he's a bust, why is he on the IIHF Canadian World Championship squad? He had a slow start, which is expected when you're 18 playing against men. He did, however, score 20-something goals which is not bad for a rookie.

The best players win championships, not just scoring races. It took Yzerman 16 years before his team won their first Cup, then his career was legitimized as a bona fide HoFer.

They were all over him because they wanted him and St Louis to go to the Canadiens. Two French Canadians on the Canadiens is bliss for a habs fan.

You are the one looking to argue here. You think that the Canadian media treats American expansion tams in hot nontraditional hockey markets the same as they treat their own- fine, good for you.

But you want to know why I think they were all over VL? Simple- its because they want him on their team. It is NOT because they wanted to give any credit whatsoever to the Lightning.

From TSN.CA
According to one well-known scouting report, the top two picks in this June's NHL Entry Draft could be Swedish defenceman Victor Hedman...and Ontario Hockey League centre Matt Duchene.
The latest edition of Red Line Report has rated London Knights centre John Tavares third behind Hedman and Duchene as a result of his performance this this year's OHL playoffs.
