<quoted text>Otis, it's so bad on the Pitts. site...I even miss your UAW rants...Maybe it'll pick up later, but that site blows in comparison to the trib.,,,,is there a pitt. team in the finals?? BTW..I'm GLAD you're pulling for Pitt.,,,Even with Wings injuries, their chances just shot up with BLACK CLOUD going the other way:)
I used to live in Pittsburgh (University of Pittsburgh grad student), it is a fantastic town!

Watch the development of the GM story...the union labor force of Michigan are deluding themselves if they think GM will survive this bankruptcy. Obama is putting all his eggs into the Chevy Spark??

That is why I was so hard on those guys, they needed to hear a dose of reality from someone besides Gettilfinger. To protect their families, they should be looking to move on and cut their losses. I hear that the Dakotas are actively recruiting workers in Michigan, they should be listening. If they like the outdoors, they should consider the oil & gas industry in the Rockies.

According to the business press and academics, lenders are going to avoid any union-labor business like the plague from here on out, since Obama makes it clear he will stack the deck and give the unions first dibs over bondholders. The unions cut their own throats, they have shown that investing in any union business is a poor decision.

Capitalism has its drawbacks, but business cannot exist without both labor and capital. Obama shoved it down the bondholders throats, they will go to court and sue on constitutional grounds because Obama's deal was blatantly political (skewed towards political supporters). They will have a very strong case.

Good luck to Detroit, the Redwings reminded me of the old Soviet Olympic teams!! However, I'm betting on the Penguins this time, all dynasties collapse.

Touching, thanks!!

I've seen many instances of economic collapse, from one major Illinois manufacturer (Illinois Harvester), to a regional industry (the Great Lakes steel producers) to an entire state (Oklahoma in the 1980s).

In every case, folks bounced back and found new jobs. They don't usually pay as much, but it brings new opportunities.

GM is dead, you guys should begin to prepare for this. Obama can't make Americans buy autos they don't want.

Look for work in the Pinedale, WY region. Natural gas drilling business is going nuts out there, and it is the best hunting & fishing I've ever seen.

Detroit whomped Pittsburgh but good!

I hope all the "City Bashers" and "Auto Worker Bashers" see that site I sent you. Believe me, there are thousands of Detroit area workers who had non-union auto-related jobs who are out of work through no fault of their own. Been blogging with the Pittsburg folk. No city bashing going on there. All hockey talk. Like Detroit, Pittsburg workers shower after work, not before. They know all about what things are like "in the real world".

I wasn't "bashing" you guys as much as "taunting," something I learned by watching my most-favorite Detroit athlete (Dennis Rodman)! He used to whisper stuff to opposing teams, who would then react angrily, drawing fouls etc. Brilliant!

Not much hockey to discuss with Wings vs. Hawks, it was a real clinic! Some rather amazing goal-tending in the end, but Hawks were clearly outgunned from the very beginning of the season (Winter Classic).

Hard to represent the Hawks in the forum when all you Michiganders are piled on, so I had to do a Rodman! In reality, your union members did the SMART thing by voting for painful concessions, and I've read where bondholders have also signed on to the plan.

GMs problem isn't the labor alone, it's ugly/fuel-inefficient products that don't sell well. I blame GM engineers and designers as much as anyone for their demise. Obama thinks he can manage a car company to compete with Honda, good luck, that is a tough matchup.

Rock on! You guys will survive the BK just fine, consider the buyout offers seriously. The economy will begin to recover now that the banks are in better shape & the Iraq war winding down, which means folks will want more stuff. I'm not sure that US auto industry will recover to the level that Obama wants, but I could be wrong.
