Full story: Newsday

In the 59 games he was healthy enough to play last season, defenseman Brendan Witt probably ranked as the Islanders' most valuable player.

My bad, i had forgotten about that... I had seen Gretzky & The Rags ( good band name )the year after & MSG against thje isles and all i could this is how terrible it was that a team with such resources couldn't give hiw a better stay.
I agree. However, he was getting up there in years. The team around him was old as well. The key players were all in the late 30's. Thats why it's refreshing to see such a young team on the ice now. I think Drury and Naslund are the only forwards over 30.

Well maybe dynasty is too strong of a word as there only 4 real dynastys in this league , Mon 2x, Oil, NY ISLES.
I;m sorry but I thought at least some of the rags fans out there would agree. Ok, still WTF, gretzky got the shaft, i think, could you imagine the boost the league would have gotten if Gretz got one more before he hung them up...
PS ETR that pint looks sooooooooooooo good, its friday so BEER ME!!!!
My pleasure, I'm off in a few minutes to go get one myself.

You are right, and Redden is the only defender over 30.

typical response from a ranger fan, answer a question with a question. No I don't wear my hat sideways,I'm normal. I don't need to be "HIP", I'm not on da we'fare and I'm not a Ranger fan. You can talk the talk but I see no answers except for name calling. I don't have all the figures but I do know that besides trading away their players(the Rangers) they had to give BIG $$$ to get the players from Edmonton. Just like when the lured Fred Shero away from Philly, the league intervened and that cost them Mega $$$ that had to be paid to the flyers.
OK Head in the sand
if you can, read the response already posted and yes the TRADE invoving Messier also had 1.5 mill going to a cash strapped Oiler team. In the grand scheme of things that is not alot of money then or now in the NHL

You won the cups at same time, you won't even come close to winning again and will surpass the N Y Rangers in years without the Cup.
Did you see todays Isles page.
We are 7th in signing season tickets. hahaha
Yea but are #1 in season tickets lost !!!
Unreal they can even post that.
Once again, pathetic.
Just like 4 The Record. S-T_F_U already, your an eff in cry baby.
You other morons were not even around when the Isles were good.
You have no clue.
Nitt Witt is one of the biggest pussays on the team. He starts , then backs away behind refs. Everygame.Over rated and getting OLD ! But nooooooooooooooooo, you morons don't see that.
One thing for sure is every summer you can count on the Piles to make the NHL laugh.
I love that picture of Piles fans holding their heads on draft day. lmao
Oh and let's not forget Christy"I'm a loser" Brinkley.
Her Pilander commercial ." I like when they smash angainst the windows". LOL
Sounds like a typical, clueless Piles fan.
Sorry, you will sux ans cry again this year.
Your highlight will be if you beat the Rangers during the regular season. Too bad, so sad !!!! lmao

You don't pay to come here.
Just because your team is a joke don't be a pussay like the rest of them fans.
Yes the Islanders are a joke. That has all ready been established and we as Islander fans are all well aware of the fact. NOW, lets talk about the Rangers and how the league is bringing them to court and trying to kick the owner out of the league! HEE HEE HEE. That's a new joke that is all too funny.

I can't believe you are still sliming your way through the internet to hurl insults at people who are strangers to you. Three years now and you are still doing the same crap. You're such a loser and the truly hilarious thing is that you will never see it. God you need to get a life.

Paul Oneil was never mad at anyone but himself. He was a true competitor and loved baseball. The other a-hole calls his teammates out on a daily basis. There is a HUGE difference. Ask any baseball player in the league and they will all tell you that they have the utmost respect for Oneil. Get a clue.

i consider "modern day" starting in 1980,thats when free agency really took hold and money became a factor in every sport,if someone offered the player more money 98% of the time the player was gone.what the islanders did will never be done again in ANY sport.give buffalo some credit no one will ever get to 4 consecutive super bowls again let alone win them, basketball and baseball forget it, will never happen.please use the word dynasty carefully, another record that wont be broken is a hockey team going 54 years without winning a stanley cup

Dont look now, but Toronto's last cup was in 1967. Do the math; they really arent that far off. Oh, and what about the Cubs or Redsox going over 70+ years with no championship ?
