There are 13 comments on the Charleston Gazette story from Mar 29, 2009, titled As bats die, visitors asked to avoid caves. In it, Charleston Gazette reports that:

Citing an "unprecedented" crisis of bats dying off from West Virginia to New England, federal officials on Thursday asked would-be spelunkers to stay out of caves in states struck by "white-nose syndrome." The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made the request to guard against the possibility that visitors are unwittingly spreading the mysterious ...

I don't particularly like them, BUT - I much prefer having some mammals flying around that I know aren't going to bother me to having billions of mosquitoes flying around that I know ARE going to bother me.
just so you know

Just wanted to tell you that Bats are really not that bad. The bats eat mostly the bugs that we all REALLY hate. Mosquitoes included. They rarely end up in long blonde hair like you see in movies and even more rarely carry rabies like skunks and raccoons. Sadly, as a caver and friend to the enviroment, bat lover will end up getting their wish. WNS is serious. Hundreds of thousands of Bats have already been killed by this virus on the east coast alone.

Maybe you could buy/build some bat houses and place them away from your home.

Bats are such cool creatures - it is the saddest thing that they are dying. All creatures are fascinating - and deserve our repect (I do have trouble appreciating ticks and mosquitos )

Just making a joke, sorry. I meant to say, we need to stay out of the caves so as not to further damage the bats fragile ecosystem. After all, bats serve as one of the better biological controls to pests that destroy the crops we need to live. Is that better dude?

This is a very sad thing that will no doubt have serious repercussions on the environment and the pest control problems that we all hate. I just hope that this disease gets brought under control or at least doesn't reach many more of the bay population, they may have a bad rap in the movies but we all know how much good they actually do.....

people who freak out on bats and don't care if they die off are no more intelligent than those who think copperheads and blacksnakes can cross.
