That's a really ratty attitude on the part of the church. Since they are the owner of record, how do they get that they have no legal obligation for upkeep???? Maybe they would change their mind if the county jerked the tax exemption and made them start paying taxes.

The question is as to who holds the property according to county records. Sounds to me as if the church does, therefore it is their responsibility. I wonder when the last member of that church was buried there, and if any of the current members have a lot assigned to them, or their families. That would be further proof of ownership.

If you read the story, it states that the cemetery was deeded to Dundee Baptist Church in 1918. Stanardsville Baptist was established in 1928. That means Stanardsville Baptist is not responsible. Two different churches... There are abandoned cemetery's all over the state that never get taken care of. Maybe Mr.Haney should have his children or grand children take care of it. If he can find members of the Dundee Baptist, I'm sure they will step up and take care of it. Since it was deeded to them.

If you had read the story correctly, you would understand that Dundee Baptist Church relocated to Stanardsville and changed their name to Stanardsville Baptist Church. Same church. Different name.

Churches do close down from time to time. Is the tax id number still the same? I know they are tax exempt but there should be a record. Unless the paperwork was lost in the court house fire of 79'.

its all about money..
What is it going to cost them to keep it up? Obviously no one wanted to volunteer or they would not have voted this way.
