My cousin and I have been doing our family tree for about 8 years now but have hit a block. I'll submit facts, then so hypothetical links and if anything jumps out at you, please let us know.

1- My Father was Robert Alan Mackrell, born 1954
2- His Father was George Mackrel (with one 'L') born 1921 who married Mary (Maisie) Ryan
3- His Father was Thomas Mackrel born 1889(c) who married Maud Totton
4- His Father was Thomas Mackrel born (c)1859 who married Mary Ann Nugent

1- Robert was one of 7 (Thomas, Eileen, Raymond, John, Linda and Danny)
2- George was 1 of 7 (Josie (half sister) Robert, James, Charles, Alice and Emily)
3- Thomas was one of 8 (James, Margret (Meg), William, Jane B, Maria(h), Elizabeth and Robert)

Thomas (1859) eldest son James remarried- after moving to Castledawson in Derry- his First Cousin Jane Pickering.
Thomas (1859) youngest daughter Elizabeth (Eliza) married her cousin Henry Pickering, Jane Pickerings Brother.
Thomas (1859) Eldest daughter Margret got evacuated to Castledawson with one of her sons in WW2 where she settled and eventually died.

Clearly a link to Castledawson...

James Mackrel (sometimes listed as Meitland)(c)1823 lived in Castledawson and married Jane Bele. They had a daughter Bele Mackrel1848 who married James Pickering born(c)1841. They had a son Henry Pickering c1889.

As yet we cannot link James, Jane and Bele to our Mackrels with the exception of the Castledawson link...

Bele Mackrel becomes Bele Pickering (Actually that is fact but stay with me here)
Bele has a son Henry Pickering (again fact but stick with us...)
Henry Pickering COULD be the Henry Pickering that marries Elizabeth (Eliza) Mackrel.
IF he is then in order to be a first cousin to Elizabeth- Elizabeths father Thomas 1859 must be Bele's brother..???? We know of no siblings to Thomas 1859, but that doesn't mean there werent any. We know practically nothing of him.

We were told by a relative, Walter McGaw, that Thomas 1859's parents were William Mackrel and Katherine Woods- but we cannot find ANY reference of them anywhere....

If this theory is correct then it means that James Mackrel (Meitland) c1823 and Jane Bele are Thomas 1859's parents

So we have a workable theory but no evidence....
Can ANYONE help us progress further?

PS- And whilst we're on hypothetical based on dates in the cemetery James c1823 may have had a brother Samuel c1820 who married Jane Lennox who had two children Samuel 1847 and William 1857 A sister Margret 1826 and a nephew George c1840 who married Mary-Jane McKirker who had a daughter Ann c1863. James c1823's father may have been George Mackrel c1787
These people did exist in Castledawson but may not be tied in as easily as that!
