Unfortunately what you discribe is a novelty piece known as a flipper. This was created after leaving the Mint and has no numismatic value. It was made to cheat at a coin toss.~ Jim

I have a friend who has a wheat penny with two 2's on it. One is one Lincoln head and the other is near the date. Is this a rare coin?

Jen, it could be one of many things.I'd have to at least see a picture of your coin to be able to tell. I suggest you join a coin group and post a picture in their album. This probably won't be a active link, so you'll need to copy and paste it into your browser...

You see, the problem with generic discription's is that you get generic answers. A coins value depends upon many things.The coins condition is very important to determining it's value.Here's a little bit that should help...
About Good - Many of the earliest Lincoln cents circulated long enough for them to wear down significantly. An about good coin will have the rim worn down into the coin. The wheat stalks on the reverse side of the coin will be worn down flat.

Good - "In God We Trust" will be visible but worn into the rim of the cent. There will be no lines in the wheat stalks, but the stalks will be well outlined.

Very Good - Half of the wheat lines in the upper wheat stalks will be visible with some worn spots.

Fine - Lincoln's bow tie and ear must be showing. All of the line details in the upper wheat stalks must show, but there can be some weak spots.

Very Fine - All of the lines in the upper wheat stalks will be clear and separated. Lincoln's portrait must be strong with the cheek and jaw bone clearly separated.

Extra Fine - An extra fine Lincoln cent will still have much of its luster and only the very high spots of the coin can be worn.

After you determine the grade of each coin, let us know, and we'll give you a reasonable answer.

Jim;
After checking my wheat penny against your condition rate my penny is Extra Fine 1909 wheat penny, the portrait and the wheat stalks are very prominant and also the lettering. Could you tell me how much it is worth, there is no lettering under the date. Thanks a bunch!

A 1909 Lincoln Cent in XF would retail for $3.50 today.

Hi have about 350 POUNDS of wheat pennies(not exaggerating)- Do I need to go through each one to look for quality and specials - Or should I just try to sell them for the weight? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I recommend taking it to a local coin dealer for an opinion. It could be plated or even rubbed with silver mercury, an old passtime for kids. However, it could also be struck on a Silver Dime planchet, which would be a major error. If you have a digital scale, you might try weighing it and a Silver Dime to see if they weigh the same.
