Help identifying bird

I saw a large bird crossing a busy road today in Southeast Michigan and was suprised to see it there. I have never seen this type of bird before and I wonder if someone can help me identify it. It was white with grey speckles, a large, goose-type shaped body, long legs, short neck, short beak. It was running across the road and then tried to fly and had a rather large wing span but couldn't seem to get airborn for long or get very high. At first I thought it to be an egret or a heron but I looked those up and I don't think that is what it was. It's head reminded me of a hawk, but it was not a hawk I have ever seen. It had a short curved beak. It ran off into the woods and disappeared. I felt bad for it because it looked very out of its element. It really looked like a cross between a goose and a hawk. Aside from the goose, I haven't seen a bird of this size in this area before. I am very curious what it was. If anyone has any suggestions on what it might be, I would appreciate it.

One more thing, I was struck by the size of the bird. I said it was goose-like but it was at least double the size of a goose. The feathers on the tail were straight back and it had a smooth back. I would say it weighed at least 10 to 15 pounds.
