No doubt about this, it has to be the poor training of commuter pilots in the US.

Just saw on the History Channel or something like that, the 10 most extreme airports in the world. That was #2 or #3. I disagree with poor pilot training however. The problem is pilots with very little real experience are taking jobs at regional or low budget carriers to get hours. Because of the rapid expansion of there airlines they are being thrust into situations they aren't ready for. How many RJ's did you see at LGA or JFK 10 years ago compared to now? Slot rules at O'Hare cause that airport to be packed with them. How about the kid in the right seat of an A320 a year out of flight school where he was in a Cessna?

Toncontín International Airport in Tegucigalpa, Honduras was #2 on the History Channel most extreme airports. Only specially trained pilots especially for the jets are allowed to land. The runway was 6112 ft prior to May 2009, it is now 7096 ft long. To land you almost make a long U shape turn. You come in very low for a long period of time with the mountains on the right & surrounded by homes, power lines etc. At the end of the very short runway is a cliff & a "freeway" at the bottom. As soon as one tire touches breaks are applied & all needed to stop the plane. It is very hard and dangerous to land in good weather. Add bad weather & its almost a recipe for disaster. During landing a lot of people have their eyes closed & are praying. When the plane come to a complete stop people look around, clap & cheer, cross themselves, say thank you prayers, etc. Most planes wreck in bad weather, don't use the full runway or attempt a touch & go. Personally if you want the "full experience" you need to land in Toncontín International Airport. Check out the videos on history channel, you tube, etc...
