I think everyone, including Clinton, agrees that his promise to end restrictions on gay service members was naive at best, stupid at worst. He wasn't prepared for the aggressive backlash he got for it.

Sheeple's right. The people may have been coming around, but congress absolutely was not.

And just imagine how much more easily a Federal Marriage Amendment would have passed had integration of gay troops been "forced" onto the military, despite all the screaming and crying from congress. The hate-mongers would have EASILY been able to point to the military and claim that it would be legal for gay people to rape children if "something wasn't done" to ban our marriage rights Federally.

Hindsight it always 20/20, of course, and yeah, I was pissed off about BOTH DADT and DOMA at the time, but I still think Clinton did the best he could given the circumstances he was operating in.
