i think in my opinion that this was just a time when men were afraid of women and didn't want them to have a mind of their own.

What is most disturbing about this period of time in history is that these horrible accusations were made by people who were supposedly in the New World to escape persecution. How easy it is for folks to lose sight of what Christianity was supposed to be about. I think the Ten Commandments got it wrong. The first two commandments should be: Mind your own business and keep your mouth shut. This kind of hysteria is now repeating itself in our political system and through rediculous "missionary" work in Africa. Now Africans are living under a similar fear. If you do not report that you think someone might be a homosexual, you are prosecuted. If you are a homosexual, you are thrown in jail. This crap was set off by Christians from the United States who have nothing better to do than to micromanage other people's sex lives and turned the situation into something that resembles the Salem Witch Trials. Well done, now folks who might have participated more in the Christian Church and offered some sense of reason and compassion have now distanced themselves from such lunacy. Christianity is being destroyed by its own parishioners and has become uninviting to anyone with a brain and the decency to mind one's own business.

Your observation is a bit over simplified. But yes, quite a number of teenage girls tried to avoid responsibility for disobeying their parents and going against their religion. So they decided to be victims and place the blame on others. Because if they could convince their family that they were overwhelmed by an evil outside themselves, they would get all kinds of sympathy and attention. And before long, these girls grew in numbers because the sympathy, attention and power was intoxicating. The village discovered that it could profit from taking the property from those accused and convicted. It turned into a systematic, village sanctioned murder/robbery scheme. As a result, people in the village soon had an agonizing choice, be accused, or be the one to accuse. When it comes down to it, those who were hung were brave and smart not to fall for such a false choice. They died with a dignity that their accusers could never understand. Unfortunately for many of their families remaining, they were left destitute and disgraced. Not many of us could stand and be executed with such conviction knowing that our loved ones will be left in such a state. Most of us would give in and be jailed forever just so our families would have a roof over their heads. And some of the weaker in spirit would succumb to the temptation to jump in and accuse simply as an offensive measure. And have you read about Giles Corey? He was even smarter and stayed silent. He refused to dignify the scam with a plea. The result was horrible for him, but it saved his family's livelihood.

So what do you think happened? Do you have information to enlighten the rest of us?
