I missed this memorial statue to Gen. Longstreet and I've been visiting there for quite a few years. Can anyone tell me where it's specifically located? Great story, by the way. Mr. Whelchel should indeed be proud of his heritage and of the fact that one of his family members is graduating from West Point.

Forgot to mention that the writer did a splendid job, obviously with sensitivity to the subject and with respect to Mr. Welchel.

This is an interesting article. However, Mr. Whelchel certainly recalls that only two Confederate generals have statues here at Gettysburg, Robert E. Lee and James Longstreet. Most Confederate generals, including A.P. Hill, Richard Ewell, J.E.B. Stuart, George Pickett, Lewis Armistead, John Hood, Robert Rodes, John Gordon, Jubal Early, Cadmus Wilcox, Dorsey Pender, Richard Anderson, Edward Johnson, Wade Hampton, Richard Garnett, James Kemper, Isaac Trimble, and numerous others, have no statues at Gettysburg.

It's on Cenfederate Avenue but not on the street it's located off of the street which made it controversial at the time of dedication becasue you cannot see it. I believe specifically it's by Renold's Woods. If you get to the Army of Viginia monument you went to far. It's also by the ampitheater.

It might have been nice to also mention the sculpter Gary Casteel, who did the statue. also the statue is located in Pitzer Woods on the right. The only controversial issue was that it was put at ground level and not up on a pedastal per the Longstreet Society.

The way the statue is displayed makes it seem that the General is larger than his horse! I have heard this comment from MANY who lead tours of the battlefield including Ed Bearss. Jeffrey D. Wert has done a good biography of Longstreet that can be purchased from Amazon.com .

Actually, I like her and I donít think she said anything wrong," said Janet Norris, 53, a house painter from Coon Rapids who visited nearby Anoka last week. "I donít trust Obama as far as I could throw him."

That's one good thing about having descendants--they can defend your legacy/honor when you die or become senile
