15 Years After Signing DOMA, Clinton Speaks Out for Marriage Equality

May 6, 2011 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: EDGE

Fifteen years after putting his signature to a federal law that excludes gay and lesbian families from any form of federal recognition or protections, Bill Clinton has joined daughter Chelsea in coming out for marriage equality in New York, reported The Huffington Post on May 5. "Our nation's permanent mission is to form a 'more perfect union' ...

Yea, easy to speak out now that politics are not involved.

Clinton was responsible for putting us way back into our closets - thanks to DADT and DOMA ...

talk is cheap. he should have stood up for us (as promised) back in 1994 !

If you really want to know how deeply Bill Clinton "believes in marriage", just ask Hillary :D

More important is that Hillary still opposes marriage equality because she's likely to run again in 2012 or 2016.

First of all, unless every single wheel of the Obama bus falls off in 2011, unlikely as that might be, there's no way Hillary would even consider running against Obama in '12. Beyond that, it's my personal belief Hilary won't consider a run in 2016. Again just my gut feelings but I think during this term she's had enough taste of the world situations to move on to other adventures. I may very well be wrong about '16 but I don't think so.

She could change her views on gay marriage by then. Even Obama and Biden said they were evoking their views on same sex marriage.

I agree. I'd call him a snake in the grass, but I'm an animal rights activist and I don't want to denigrate snakes.

I'm glad he was impeached.

We would have a more perfect union if left-wing politicians and propaganda organs like Clinton and the Huffington Post would get out of the union that they try to destroy.

how many wheels does that bus have????

unemployment is back on the rise, the economy grew at an anemic 1.1%, we're $14 trillion in debt, houses are still being foreclosed on in record numbers, the mexican drug cartels control the border, gas, corn, wheat and gold are ALL more than twice what they should be, and, we still have no budget.

to any rational person, THAT'S a lot of wheels!

President Clinton was wrong 15 years ago. What can he do now, except admit he was wrong, and take a correct position going forward?

Clinton did MORE to harm the quest for Equal Rights for gay and lesbian Americans, than ANY President, or politician in history.

WHY do so many of you worship this LYING bum ?

As an out-of-work former politician, he has NO power to do anything for us.

When he HAD the power, he worked against us.

Too many of you OBVIOUSLY worship ANYONE who slaps a "Democratic" label on themselves, no matter WHAT they have done against us, or what they have NOT done FOR us.

You people are completely illogical and a good argument AGAINST democracy.

Tell me, WHAT would have been so bad IF Clinton had VETOED DOMA & DADT, instead of gleefully signing them into law as fast as he could ?

If he was such in favor of Equal Rights for gay and lesbian Americans, WHY did he NOT veto DOMA and DADT ?

Apparently, many don't remember that Clinton wanted to go a lot further to ban discrimination against gays in the military. DADT is what he had to settle for in order to get any kind of agreement.

The best way to get Frank's attention is tell him you're a 15 year old heterosexual boy who is questioning his sexuality...

WHAT agreement ?! He caved immediately. WHAT would have happened if he had simply vetoed the bill ?

MORE people were thrown out under DADT than ever before in U.S. history. HOW can you thank him for that ?! He stabs us in the back, and you guys thank him. You Democrats are TRULY insane since you obviously cannot think and respond LOGICALLY.

True. And he's been outspoken about his support. Which proves my point exactly. If call yourself a "Democrat", then no matter what you do or say to hurt us, or simply not support us, you will STILL get support from the Democratic electorate.

And if you PUBLICLY SUPPORT Equal Marriage Rights for gay and lesbian AMericans, but call yourself a "Republican", you will still only get condemnation form those same people.

They're completely irrational and proud of it.

God save us from the Democrats for they are TRULY insane.

Since Dick Cheney is not trying subvert traditional American values that have stood the test of time for two centuries the answer is no.Dick Cheney is a great American and deserves his opinions.Hes also not trying to run for President like Hillary Clinton. Its no accident that she opposes same sex marriage.

sounds like odumba & his sick anti-American agenda is the same thing ... just wants to get reelected!
Hey Christshariahn numbnuts, Obama's done an awful lot for glbt rights for someone who's just acting cravenly: Hate crimes, repeal of DADT Don't Pursue, refusal to defend DOMA, State Dept. partner benefits, binding letters from the Dept. of Education to every public school in the country that they'll be sued if they don't deal with anti gay bullying that makes any mention of a gender characteristic (which is all anti gay bullying,) etc.

Every one of these advances which has come to the attention of sht fer brains fundies has been fought tooth and nail. This is not the smoothest way to get re-elected. That would be Bill Clinton's much more modest approach on controversial topics.

But this is all way over your inbred head. Praiz!
