I think it's disgusting that our local paper chose an individual among hundreds to single out in the community. Do we write articles like this concerning everyone that gets a DUI? No, I don't think we do. Hey Sacco, how would you feel if you had two children that had to face their friends at school after some jerk had just published this about their father? I hope you'd feel the same way Mark Daniels does. This is an outrage, and if I were him I'd be lawyering up again the BHC.

While I understand what you are saying, the truth of the matter is, the kids probably feel a lot better than they would have had he wrecked and killed himself, or God forbid, wrecked and killed someone else.

Maybe this will be the impetus he needs to clean up his act, and if it is, then his kids should, at least in my opinion, be forever grateful it happened.

And before you get on a soapbox, I like the guy, think the world of him, but when you are in the public eye, charged with setting an example for our kids, you are held to a different standard. Just a fact of life, and this was already public anyway.

I suppose I am on my "soapbox", but I personally know 3 educators in the region (not Bristol city) that have had DUIs; two of those educators had more than one. In fact, one of them had no driver's license for a year or more. To my knowledge, their names weren't dragged through the mud and put on display for the world to judge. Their matters were handled in a court of law, exactly where Daniels' should be.

Concerned Bristolian, sorry but I have to disagree with your post. Mark Daniels is the Head Baseball Coach of one of the winningest programs in the state of VA., and when he gets arrested for DUI it is news worthy. His position is in the public eye, he knew that when he accepted the position. Likewise, he made the decision to drink and drive and now he must live with the consequences. I hope next time he thinks about his children that you mentioned (or other peoples children for that matter), before he gets behind the wheel intoxicated. Their are certain jobs where people watch every little thing you do, for example a teacher gets a DUI and nobody knows, but a principal or coach gets one and it hits the paper. If a fireman gets a DUI you never hear about it, but a policeman makes the front page. Its just the way it is.

What about the kids Coach Daniels kicked off the team for drinking and there has been several over the years. So much for that zero tolerance policy.

He should resign.

They haven't won too much lately. This sets a VERY BAD example for the kids!!!! He should be fired! This is an OUTRAGE!! VHS should be Ashamed! If they keep this law breaker around to coach then I'm ashamed to be an alumini of the school!!! It's time for a change there anyway. He has had great teams and allowed them to underachieve year after year. VHS was once a great baseball school....now it's fallen by the way side. Everyone lives off the past with this guy.

I totally agree that he should be suspended. My children went to Vhs but did not play baseball but the rumors that I heard about what went on was terrible. He is in the public eye, he is a Teacher & when a Teacher does something wrong they are news worthy because the are interacting with our children on a daily basis. Also, I hate it for his girls but he should have thought about his wife & kids before he went out to drink & drive. NO one should do that!!!

as a teacher and a coach he should be a role model. Everyone messes up once but was this not atleast his second DUI?

The parents should be the role model, not the coach or the teachers! Teachers are hired to teach a subject- coaches are hired to teach a sport. Neither are hired to be a role model or to raise YOUR children. That's YOUR job as a parent!

I went to va high I saw they way he treated the LD class. They were sent to him to have to fun or some gym time and he used them as his personal slaves doing the baseball teams laundry and moving equipment it was unbelievable.

I agree, but sometimes our ids end up spending as much, if not more time around their coaches than they do their parents, especially during the school year. What happens when a parent says, "Don't drink" but the coach sets an example like this? Then the kids go off to Las Vegas to play ball...

Fact of life, kids look up to a lot of different people, and you can do everything right as a parent and still have someone come along and screw it up.

That is why I do my best to make sure that the people that interact with my kids the most have the same value system I do.

Mr. Daniels did an excellent job in his special education position. It is the goal of an LD teacher to prepare your students for the real world and laundry is a part of that. It wasn't just the baseball team's laundry though. It might have been towels from the cosmotology dept. He also taught them how to cook. Is that bad? Those students loved him and he would do anything for them.
As far as the # of DUIs. I think its terribly slanderous for someone to imply that there have been more than this one. Check the facts before you start trying to ruin someone.
As far as where the team has taken trips (Vegas) remember all those trips weren't thought up, planned, approved, paid for by Mr. Daniels himself. There was a long process involved. The team had to be invited for one, the elected school board members had to approve the trip and then the team had to raise the money.
It seems like this one horrible error in judgement on Mr. Daniels part has given everyone open season on him for anything and everything and I hardly think that's fair.

Good thing, I sure as hell wouldn't want my kid emulating someone who is forty years old and still has the maturity of a college kid. Maybe the school board needs to talk to him about him and all his assistant coaches dipping while they are around the kids also. What about them staggering in drunk at 1am in the morning on some of those trips they take to the beach and to Vegas? Basically the coaches get a vacation while the kids get told to stay in their rooms and are not even allowed to leave with their parents.

The thing that bothered me was he and his wife would always walk around like they were the best things ever. His wife is too stuck up to even speak to anyone. Oh, she does have her favorites, but everyone else is beneath her. Mr. Daniels gossips about all the kids and their parents like a teenager. Sometimes you have to be brought down to earth when you think you are the crap. Maybe this incident will be good for them in the long run. No one is better than anyone else.

Very true his wife when out walking has her nose so stuck up in the air if it rained she would drown, a lot of these folks forget where they came from when they find a little success it sometimes takes things like this to bring them back down here with the rest of us.

It amazes me that educators have had worse charges that were hush hush. Coach Daniels is an awesome coach and teacher there is no reason to drag his name through the mud I'm sure there are plenty of educators who drink or have even received DUIs
