S.C. restrictions leave illegal immigrants' futures uncertain

There are 11 comments on the www.independentmail.com story from Aug 2, 2009, titled S.C. restrictions leave illegal immigrants' futures uncertain. In it, www.independentmail.com reports that:

In the summer of 2008, South Carolina became the first state to ban illegal immigrants from enrolling in public colleges and universities. The law was a blow to young people such as one a 16-year-old in a family of illegal immigrants in Upstate South Carolina. The teen came to South Carolina from Costa Rica with her family when she was 2 years old. She is a rising 11th-grader in high school and has a 3.7 grade point average. She was devastated when she heard about the new law banning her from public colleges. “I can’t get into a college here,” she said. “It hurt me.” She wants to go to Clemson University and become a neurosurgeon. Her teachers have told her it is a great university with a caring faculty. She is counting, she said, on the government to pass the federal Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which would let her go to college in the United States. The bill would make it easier for illegal immigrants to become citizens if they are high school graduates, have good moral character and have been in the country five years at the time the law is enacted.

If I might quote myself, "Frankly, my dear. I don't give a damn." If you are here in this country illegally you have no rights as given forth in this Nations Constitution nor to our schooling practices of our children. Any illegal alien given a scholorship is one less that will go to a legal citizen or legal citizens child. I'm sorry for you but it is you're parents that are to blame not our system. We have the right to chose legal citizens over those here illegally if we so choose.

It is truly unfortunate that there are the "innocent" children caught in the middle of this Illegal Immigration battle. Of course the American citizens of the United States are made out to be the vilans in all of this when it really is all on the people (adults) who bring their children or birth their children here illegally.

Cut a break for one and you will have to cut a break to the whole lot. I think this 16 year-old, and all the others, should take their knowledge home and make it blossom for them.

We need to concentrate on giving OUR children the education they should be entitled to. We have promised OUR children, OUR posterity, that we will afford them OUR prosperity. There is nothing that says we are responsible for the WORLD!!!!!!

She couldnt get into a college here.. how sad. She shouldnt have been able to get into the COUNTRY here.

Makes me sick. She should take it up with her own country- let them put her in college.

HOW-- is it even our concern??

"We are just here for the better life! Aiee!" yeah, well, I could break into my neighbor's house and steal their flat tv -- for MY better life..

I could rob a bank and use the money I get away with to have a better life!-

Im sick of that lame excuse.. "better life"...

I couldn't agree with you more. I feel exactly the same way you do. These "invaders" walk over the backs of the very people they are asking to give them help to have a "better life" while they spit in our face and tell us our laws are against THEIR "civil rights".

I think that is sufficient enough reason to have animosity towards ALL "illegal immigrants". They have EARNED that animosity. They made the first move and that move was to invade our Country. It is only to be expected that American citizens who are struggling to get from one day to the next will do what they have to do in order to survive. That is called "defending yourself". What is "civil" about trespassing? Since when does an "uncivilized" person deserve any "civil rights"?

It's one thing to come here and put yourself in harms way by breaking our laws. It is quite another to drag your kids into the mess and then expect sympathy in the end.

Ain't going to happen here.
