Prep football: Brawl mars San Rafael's shutout win over Redwood

Full story: Marin Independent Journal

What could have been a night for celebration for the San Rafael High football team -- a 22-0 victory over Redwood which kept the Bulldogs' perfect this season -- ended with an onfield scrum Friday night, with San Rafael police taking official statements at the school.

the ending of this game was BS. SR played one heck of a game and it was obvious that the Redwood team was very frustrated by how well SR took it to them. Redwood could barely move the ball against SR's tough defense all evening. For those of us in the stands it seemed clear what happened at the end. After taking the SR kickoff the Redwood player was tackled. He then punched the SR tackler in the face. Then all heck broke loose. That Redwood player was clearly out of control. You could hear Redwood talking smack at the SR players all night long even as they were getting soundly beaten. Coaches usually encourage smack talk or at a minimum they can stop it if they want to. Redwood coaches obviously did not want to stop their players. High school football coaches need to closely monitor players who go out of control during the heat of a game. The coaches know who the hot headed players are and the Redwood coaches did not control their players. Redwood showed no class or maturity with their actions last evening. SR played a great game and Redwood owes the team and parents an apology for the actions of both their players and coaches. There is no place in high school for the lack of sportsmanship shown by Redwood last evening. Redwood HS should be embarrassed by their football team.

I listened to the game online and the announcer made it clear that the Redwood team/player provoked the whole incident. What a disgrace!! Coaches on Redwood obviously have the same elitist attitude that spills over on campus. To imply that your boys didn't start the fight is blind! Happy for San Rafael's success.

I'm also sorry that the IJ spent most of the article on the brawl, not the game.

SR is having a FABULOUS season and that should be the focus. SR is half the size of Redwood, with clearly a different socio-economic group of kids. Athletic budget is challenged, yet they are excelling in many areas that would NOT be expected...football 2020, 2010 golf, Cross country state champion runs for the past three years, mountain biking. Give SR the credit it deserves for managing with limited resources in their athletic budget and many kids who don't have the expendable income to play club sports, hire private coaches, etc. GO DAWGS!! What real high school sports should be about.

whatever, football fights happen. No big deal and just make sure these types of things don't happen again or are limited because it just embarrasses both teams.
Now as for the player with the concussion he should be out a minimum of two weeks.

typical punk-ass reaction by the coddled brats of Redwood. Their parents have told them they are the best for so long, they actually believe it. They won't handle flipping burgers well after getting their suspect 4.3's either. Redwood sucks. Go DAWGS!!!

Rewood games are streamed live on kbcsports.com mainly san diego teams and they used to do the Piedmont games but not anymore. Not the greatest announcers but they get the job done.

Hall is doing a great job with what he has. He coached my son in Pop Warner and really made an impression on the kids. "grades and weights, in that order". He made it clear that "student" was first with all the athletes. Congrats to his success! Needs to stay, heard a rumor he will wrap it up at San Rafael at the end of the season. Hope it's bull.

Not only has Hall brought a winning team to San Rafael, the whole school improves. Athletics and academics go hand in hand. A strong athletic program will always lead to a strong academic element.

I had tears in my eyes, watching the homecoming game.

Please continue to hire quality coaches who will turn around the entire athletic program at SRHS

GO DAWGS!

I heard one of the Redwood coaches punched 2 SR players and that was the reason the police were involved. If true, that story needs to be followed up on.

Obviously a racist comment from a sad soul. This is exactly the kind of thinking that prevails in many of Marin's high schools. Well the SRHS football team has the last laugh doesn't it. Sad comment really.

The Redwood coach also got arrested for punching two of SR's best players in the face. That is unmentioned in the article, probably because they are working on supporting the claim with evidence. However, this looks very bad on Redwood's part.

you are correct. I am very sad. I attend sr and see how much potential these boys have. they could go so far "if" they would just try harder of the field ie school. i love the team and the boys with all my heart and i wish it would not come to this. unfortunatley i think it will

I have to say it takes two parties to have a fight. Where is the accountability of the San Rafael Players and Coaches. They played a mean and dirty game of football and they are the ones that should be ashamed! Regardless of what happened, they had a part to play in all this and I am SHOCKED that we are back in Kindergarten pointing fingers! This is really quite SAD! San Rafael took shots after the whistle blew countless times - they are the ones that started the game with an attitude and huge chip on their shoulders. When our player got hurt in the JV Game I heard from others that the San Rafael Varsity Players were laughing. They had the same reaction when they tackled our QB hard multiple times. They seemed to find this amusing and now we have two players at home suffering severe concussions. Not to mention they were supposed to be hosting the game. Well if that is how they greet their guests, I can promise I won't be returning any time soon.

Interesting you find it funny when PLAYERS GET HURT!!! Wow that is really mature! So San Rafael had no part to play and they shouldn't take any accountability - what are you teaching those kids? San Rafael should be thoroughly ashamed. Both parties made mistakes and are both to blame.

the marin ij normally has great coverage of high school sports but they did not do their reputation any favors by their terrible reporting of the SR/RW football game. I thought it was a poorly written and thought out article.

Also any one who saw any of the many game films will see the RW assistant coach punching a SR player. I believe he was arrested. He should never set foot on a high school football field again. I also heard the RW head coach apologized for his players starting it all.
