I've been currently diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma. The standard of treatment is a total thyroidectomy but I'm a little reluctlant to remove my whole thyroid. Has anyone here had a total or subtotal thyroidectomy and what has your experiences been like? Has there been any complications after the surgery?

I had a total thyroidectomy in August this year because my thyroid kept going over active since 1998. the surgery went fine i was a bit scared of having the surgery as i have 2 small children. The only problem i had it made my calcium in my blood go low and i am still having treatment for that but that does not always happen its just how my body reacted to the surgery. A friend of mine had the same surgery and she had no side affects at all. so please dont be scared, its easier said than done because i had tears in my eyes when i was on the operating table because i just thought about my children.anyway take care i expect by now you have had your op and in full recovery.

I had the left thyroid and a mass removed. The mass is cancerous. I will now have to have the surgery again and have he right thyroid removed. Then iodine radiation to kill any left over cancer cells. I am apprehensive about it all but one thing I am very concerned with is gaining weight with having no thyroid. Any stories or thoughts anyone could share?

hi there, i had all my thyroid out in august but i did not have any cancer there like you have please dont worry about the putting on weight side of it. at the moment my weight is stable it has not gone up or down though it would be nice if it went down but then every woman has a hang up on weight. but please get better and dont worry about not having a thyroid. Just have the op and keep me posted on how you are doing.

I had a total Thyroidectomy due to Thyroid Cancer. There is nothing to worry about, the operation went like a dream;the mopping up exercise with Iodine Radiation was a bit unusual as in solitary confinement. There are times when you feel totally wasted until you get used to your replacement level of the drug Thyroxin, this should NOT lead to Weight Gain.
Good Luck

I started off with just a hemi-thyroidectomy (they only took out 1/2 of the thyroid.) I then had to return for a second surgery once papillary thyroid cancer was found. Ended up having a total thyroidectomy. Check out my story:

Good luck!!
