Tobacco Could Kill 1 Billion by 2100

“We're going to continue to spend money”

The World Health Organization warned in a new report Thursday that the 'tobacco epidemic' is growing and could claim 1 billion lives by the end of the century unless governments dramatically step up efforts to curb smoking.

In its first comprehensive report on tobacco use in 179 countries, the U.N.s health agency said governments around the world collect more than $200 billion in tobacco taxes every year but spend less than one-fifth of 1 percent of that revenue on tobacco control, it said. Read more

It's known that smokers die off due to smoking aprox 7 to 14 years before nons do. If you take one Billion as number of deaths, that equals 7 to 14 Billion life years lost because of smoking. Maybe smoking is just one of natures ways to prune off people who are no longer needed.

tobacco make you guys stupid. tobacco eats up your brain and rots your lungs. you are not only killing yourself, but your loved ones and people around you. One question: why do you smoke? why do you make yourself stink like sh@@t? why do you trash yourself and waste your life? is something good about tobacco? the taste? the smell? or just because you are yourself vicious? I saw that dumped smoker neighbor create misery to her own pets. I feel sorry for that dog that cough like living in hell and that cat has no way out than breathing the owner 's smoke. They would be more happy living in the shelter where at least smoking is banned for the animal health. since that dumped ass moved next to us, even my dog does not want to go to the patio anymore to avoid smelling that sh@@t. Animal is definitely smarter than smokers!

It's a shame these addicts have taken political action to defend their "right" to force their habit on others. Why can't they just smoke in private?

"According to the report, 74 countries still allow smoking in health care institutions and about the same number allow smoking in schools. More than half the countries, with two-thirds of the world's population, allow smoking in government offices and workplaces, and only 20 of 179 countries have complete bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship."
Hurray for those countries! It's good to know that not everyone has been subverted and subjugated by the lie-spewing anti-smoker filth. Death to the anti-smokers!
The anti-smokers deliberately use defective studies that ignore the role of infection, in order to falsely blame tobacco. They are the ones causing unnecessary deaths, because they suppress research and consume precious resources for their vicious propaganda.
I see Carol is saying, "Death to the anti -smokers!" As a anti- smoker I find that offensive, and I hate it when even one smoker dies due to smoking. The reason anti-smokers hate cigarettes is because of the deaths and illness their use has caused. No we don't hate the smoker, just what they are addicted to.

If it it "nature's way", then why grouse about some made-up statistical concept as "life-years lost"?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2083312

And if you wish to make a fuss over "life-years lost", then why fail to mention the 46 million (estimated) abortions per year?

Even if you take an arbitrary life-expectancy value of 83 years, that is 3.8 billion "life-years lost" in ONE year!

Hey, here's a news headline for you, that you'll never see:

Abortion Could Kill 4.6 Billion By 2100!

No, but let's get all fussy about 1/4 of that number of people because it's politically correct to speak out against tobacco, not abortion.

I don't belive in abortion but that's not the point. This forum and threads are about smoking and Autos, politics or Abortion are not the subject we are involved with on this forum. Topix has I sure forums on abortion, why don't you go post there if that's your concern ?
