It is their right, as it is their property. This is actually why I think they did this, many states are forcing a ban, almost identical to this policy, and it's sort of saying "we chose it, not the law makers," a "middle finger" if you will. Considering most Starbucks in big cities are not in locations smoking is possible within 25 feet of their entrances anyway. ;)

Smokers buy coffee and pay taxes too, this is just another part of big business and government controlling people in a free country, chipping away at your freedom a piece at a time and people will not see it before it`s to late and there`s nothing you can do about it. before long they will be making people become vegans because they are getting to fat which is their choice. A few people want us all to live their way of life and complaining till they get it their way.
Personally Starbucks coffee sucks and is over priced for colored hot water and the fat making pastry they sell and I think they should be put out of business for the good of all people.
I do hope they raise the prices to makeup the profit lose from the smokers they will lose and the patrons should and will pay the higher price to keep the top CEOs rich.
Buy Dunkin Donuts coffee or McDonalds which is good and will save you money.

Um, no smoking in those stores either, by law and their own standards. You don't seem to get it, in the US it's illegal to smoke in anyplace that is not designated as "smoke friendly," and there are no McDonald's that allow smoking, and no Dunkin Donuts that do either. Like Starbucks, they chose their non-smoking policies.

So then, try to smoke in some business marked as "non-smoking" and be insistent. Dare you to.

Actually, you are correct in that I misread it, but your bad attitude simply makes me want to point out to you that .... you have a messed up attitude. Which sort of makes my mistake look unimportant now.

You have to keep these smelly smokers away from decent folk. You go to get a coffee and they hit you up for a smoke if you do that filthy habit, a light, if you have that filthy habit, or spare change so they can continue their filthy habit.

You are confusing bums with smokers, two very different people.

The sidewalks in front of their stores are public property and they cannot impose their will there. I don't smoke but I may stand on the sidewalk in front of the local starbucks just to hear the namby pamby wimps whine!

Depends on where you live, not to mention that in some places the property line does extend to the sidewalk, which is all because of messy property laws that make no sense to anyone with a brain anyway. Here in Seattle they passed a law that said no smoking within 25 feet of any entrance or window, the cops just scoffed and stated openly "there is no way to enforce this law without trampling on people's rights and crossing swords with other laws." They don't actually enforce, no one really does, they just put up the signs and the idiots who voted for it shut up.

Let's see what a smoker says about this 25 foot no smoking area:

Smokers lose their ability to taste

So, what does a smoker with no taste buds suggest as a way of protesting no smoking at Starbucks?

Great. I also support McDonald's because they have been waving the smoke free banner for almost 20 years

Dunkin Donuts was a laggard. They were about a year behind McDonald's in going smoke free. They waited until almost the end of 1995.

No. You just said that you were not going to buy coffee at Starbucks because of their policies that discriminate against smokers. Instead you will buy your coffee at McDonald's or Dunkin Donuts that also discriminate against smokers. Way to go! An excellent way to get your point across that you do not like smoking bans. Support the businesses that have had bans longer than most states.

“and how does this effect you?”

In Arkansas you can't smoke in any public setting, unless it's a bar. Do other states allow smoking in restaurants?
