I'm 18 and discovered I had shingles for the first time earlier this year. At first I thought it was another poison ivy attack, but the doctor took one look at it and said I had shingles. Thing is I came in too late for them to give me any antivirals. Now I'm pretty sure I have them again, so earlier this week I went to the emergency room, I wanted the antiviral this time around. And it seems to be working, but instead of just having bumps on my side they seem to be spreading all over, and not in patches. More like a bump here, a bump there, but all itch horribly and the area around them burns. And they're on both sides of my body! One on my left knee and another on my right ankle, my side, my arm, my hand... is this even possible or is something else horribly wrong with me? ><

I started back in march with tingling from above my left shoulder blade, thru left shoulder & down my left bicep & forearm. In mid-May, had an outbreak of a line of blisters that burned on my left butt cheek. Never knew what it was & didn't do anything about it. Then by last week in may went to scratch my back on upper left side & noticed a rash that burned. My upper left arm also felt like it was sunburned. Then felt burning in my left armpit & a few days later the rash formed on back of left arm where sunburn feeling was as well as in my left armpit. Called my doc who prescribed Valtrex. I only needed advil for the discomfort. I now know that the rash I had mid-May was a shingles outbreak & believe that the tingling I'm still feeling to this day from shoulder blade & down left arm is possibly associated with the shingles as well. I haven't fellt well since last outbreak ... my equilibrium is off on left side, I get headaches from time to time of which I don't typically get, fatigue & I absolutely itch all over my body. This is now going on for 2 months. Is there some kind of test that can be done to determine if it's all associated with shingles? I've read that symptoms vary depending on which nerves are affected, which can explain the equilibrium issues if nerves to inner ear are affected. Also, has anyone else broken out in the sweats directly before outbreak of rash? I was sweating profusely & had waves of nauseousness before hand.

about 2 yrs ago I had this painful blistering rash around my torso, right and left side, front and back. When I scratched it i would get this crazy sensation under my skin and the blisters would ooze. I had it for like a month. I also had 2 nights of severe vomiting a week or so apart and sensations of a UTI throughout the month but tested negative for a UTI. I went to the hospital and because I was only 30yrs old and the rash was on both sides they told me it was not shingles. After seeing 3 doctors- a hospital one, a naturopath and a homeopath - no one knew what I had. The hospital gave me an antibiotic and just as the shingles rash was going away I broke out in hives head to toe from the antibiotic and it was awful. My guess is a good as anyone's on this page but all the same symptoms and pain were present. Since no doctor could figure it out I am going to assume that it was shingles. I hope I never get it again!!!!

I went to the dermatalogist last week as I had a rash on my face and didn't want to see how it would develop as we were leaving the next day for vacation. My skin is very sensitive with frequent bouts of eczema so I was very surprised to hear her say she thought it might be shingles. I had a touch of poison ivy on my wrist and she thought it might be poison ivy, especially since it was in two separate spots on my face, on the right side of my mouth and chin and then in a semi circle around my eye, but since the two spots on he face actually looked different she thought it might be both! At that point I had mild to moderate itching and there was no pain. I really hate to take medication but she felt strongly that it made sense to give me the Valtrex (generic) as she said if I waited it would be too late to treat it and the symptoms could be much more severe. I just finished taking the Valtrex and have been dying for it to be over since starting it I have developed even more of a rash...which to me seems more like an allergic reaction than shingles. It is on my left torso from the breast to the genital area (the rash on my face was on the right) but the bumps do not look like the pictures I see of shingles. They are separate and spread over the whole left side. I also have an outbreak on my buttocks- that one looks more like shingles possibly as the bumps are in a straight line, and another outbreak on the side of my leg right near the left buttock. Both yesterday and today I had some moderate to significant pain on the front of my legs after waking up which went away after taking Tylenol. I don't really know what is related to what or what to think. Given my history of skin problems I'm not convinced it's shingles but I cannot find ONE thing on the internet about a rash that develops on one side of the body only. Incidentally, the rash on my face almost disppeared completely after going in the ocean (it was also near the end of the medicine) while it has not helped the rash on my body at all. Sorry for the long post- I just don't know what to think. And I'm still away so I can't even go back to the dermtologist for a follow up for at least another week. Argh...I am going to try to B-12 and Lysine...

Shingles only attacks one side of your body. I found mothing (including Morphine) stopped the pain - but when the pain eased off after 2 weeks, Vicoden was useful in reducing, but not eliminating the pain.

Shingles in generally on just one side, but not always. I have singles as I type, and it started between my breasts, and has moved outward on both sides.

Initially had right hip/leg pain, some low back pain on same side, swollen lymph nodes in groin. Next day a rash on lower back on right. Then the rash proceeded to encircle that leg, including that side of the groin, AAARRRGGGHHH, in the S2 dermatome.
My urethra was so painful I had difficulty urinating. Got diagnosis two days later, and then started having same pain on upper right chest, like a bra line. It is still very tender but no rash. I wonder if I was about to breakout there but it was stopped as I got on the antiviral? I don't see any other posts about getting it in this tender area. I know it's shingles, not herpes simplex. Only the right labia is affected (thank you God), but the pain is incredible. Today is day 6 since the rash breakout. Any ideas about when the pain will subside enough for me to get off this pain medicine and back to work? Maybe we need to start a foundation for shingles research. This crap is disabling...

Shingles can happen to anyone and anywhere on the body but in most cases it happens to people with weak immune systems, the elderly and people dealing with lots of stress in their day to day lives.

Shingles is more likely to happen on both sides of the body in the same areas, this is very common with shingles.

I am SO HAPPY to find these posts. I was diagnosed with shingles/herpes simplex virus shortly after a Dentist severed a nerve by accidental injectional injury and a traumatic neuroma grew in the nerve stump. The first few years the shingled were typical and only to one side; then I developed Post herpetic nerve neuraligia. FOr the past year I have been getting shingles on both sides of my face, both eyes, and both ears. The doctors have cultured them and they always come back as Shingles and sometimes a secondary staff infection. My shingles have went chronic. I suffer them all the time. Last month was the worst; 27 blisters on my ace, both eyes, both ears & lymph nodes below, in my nose, scalp and mouth. I was sent to an Eye Doctor that diagnosed Blephitis because you cannot possibly have shingles in both eyes. He told me to put hot compresses on it, like putting fire on your wounds! The shingles cleared up even before I got half of the $240 in medications he ordered. Right now I am suffering through the beginnings of a new outbreak; the fever flu-like symptoms and nausea and I have blister popping up along my spine. The ones on my scalp never healed from last months outbreak. I have an appointment with my Pain Center on Wednesday and they will not let me in the office if I have active shingles. Since some of these are noticeable on my face I can only hope they allow my husband to pick up my medication once again. A question? The Dermatologist I contacted today told me I needed to see a Neurologist. IS there anyone else in here with chronic outbreaks and PHNN and what kind of Specialist do you see? I am sick and tired of wasting money on Doctors that do nothing but shop me off to the next one. I would welcome any advice!
Teresa, it sounds like you may want to try some acupuncture, I have been suffering for years, none of the meds seem to work at all, but I amgetting some relief with acupuncture...good luck! Obviously they think it's quite contagious!

I had chicken pox when I was younger. At age 62, I had my first case of schlings on my upper left arm. They were very painful. I received a injection for shingles and was also given a prescription for the pain. I'm now 63 and having another flare up of shingles, except this time on the inside of my right arm. I also have single blisters on both sides of my body at random places. Could it be possible that I'm having another attach of chicken pox along with another outbreak of shingles?

When I was younger I had chicken pox. At age 62, I got shingles on my left upper arm. I received an injection for the shingles, hoping I would not get another painful outbreak. One year later, age 63, I'm having another outbreak of painful shingles on the inside elbow of my right arm. Every fiber of my body hurts. Even the prior shingles I had on my left arm are returning. Plus I'm having scattered outbreaks of a single blister with fluid in them on several parts of my body. So, I'm wondering if a person can have chicken pox again, along with another case of shingles?

I have had shingles since 5/7/2012. I have had 4 out breaks one on left side at waist line, at 6 weeks a triangle in front, 8/16 4 spots straight up from naval, and 3 under breast, 9/14 2 spots near left naval. Now this am 10/2 I have a new spot on right side of naval. I had more pain.the past 3 days , with chills. I knew before getting out of bed another out break. I have been reading other peoples comments. I am 61, a mail carrier and not worked since 5/7. Yes we need to let our doctors read these comments. I am in menopause 4 years. I feel like I am having a monthly period of shingles. The pain is worse than getting hit by a car and 2 knee surgeries and on more drugs. I was at the doctor within the first 12 hours of out break. I had EMG on feet yesterday to see if shingles pain moved to feet . My test normal now referred to foot doctor

I had my first bout with shingles four years ago. The itching, burning, and excruciating pain was nearly unbearable. My symptoms began to fade after six months or so but never went away entirely. Last spring the symptoms came roaring back to life and lasted for seven or eight months and then eased off. I thought I might get relief at last then I had to have emergency heart surgery and it hit me harder than ever. That was in March and lasted till the first of August. Two days ago I began to itch and burn on the opposite side of my back. Everything I read said that you can't get it on both sides of the body. These new symptoms are familiar - the itching and the pain are intensifying daily. I am terrified! This has been the worst year of my life and I just wish it would end.

Please tell me that someone has gotten the vaccine and minimized future eruptions of shingles. I too feel like I have more than one area but only right shoulder/back is the most painful. I only had a few blisters. They healed up quickly but the residual pain and malaise is horrific. I was told by gp I could get vaccine after shingles have been gone 30 days. Anyone else? Thank you for the optimistic support. This is awful...surprising it isn't deadly ;-)

Hi Terri - I first got shingles in Sept.2006, a really bad case on my midriff and around to the center of my back. I had to resign my job because I couldn't work, I would sit in my car at the end of the day and cry from the pain. I got the shingles vaccine when it came out a couple of years ago, hoping it might help my pain, itching, numbness and burning that I still feel to this day. Two days ago I started an outbreak on my right hand and I think the left one too - I'm hoping the vaccine will shorten the cycle this time. I thought at first I was bitten by fire ants but now I know beter. Hope you feel better. It is terrible to have this constant pain.
