I started getting the sympotms of Shingles on my left side about a week ago. I started a course of meds today(the rash broke out four days ago, but I attributed it to a normal poison ivy rash) but now I'm having an itching feeling on the right side of my face as well. Is it possible to get Shingles on a different side and part of the body? And for the symptoms to start a week afterward?

I have just had my second attack of shingles, the initial was on the stomach and up the trunk on the left side, a few days after the first blisters appeared and where getting nice and blistery I had a form of shingles on the left side of the face, my doctor said it wasn't possible, but I don't believe her because there were small blisters and a the skin was really sensitive to touch. I now have PHN in this area and a secondary bacterial infection from the attack.
When I had my first attack I had it on both sides of my waist in a sort of a circle, it was a cluster of blisters which were on fire, this time round I had a band or line of blisters.
I think Shingles doesn't care where it comes out, if you think you have the same symptoms in a different area then its part of the same atttack.

I've been told it can't be on both sides of the body at once, but I'm here to tell you after over 30 years of bout after bout IT CAN!! After my first antiviral injections my entire body felt like I was trying to sleep on prickly pear cactus. I'm in the middle of another bout now and am going to ask for the vaccine on Monday. Enuf is enuf!

Hallelujah! Finally, I find other people to back me up. I first had shingles 40 years ago - a terrible attack and at that time they only treated the pain, with Codeine. Three years ago I had another attack. I recognized it immediately. My allergist prescribed Valtrex which if taken in the first 72 hours stops it in its tracks and it worked incredibly.

Now I'm having either another attack or might actually have chicken pox as it's moving down my body. I'm on the Valtrex again plus a homeopathic medicine spray called Vesi-Pro for skin rashes by Apex Energetics. It seems to help the most. My allergist gave it to me.

When the rash started moving I called my dermatologists office as I thought I should make an appointment to get another person's angle. His receptionist began spouting off that NO ONE EVER gets shingles a second time and NEVER gets it on two sides! Well, I've had it on both sides each time. It makes sense to me if one side can get infected, why not the other?

Other things that have helped besides the spray & Valtrex are Vit. C and a product called NAC (n-acetyl-cystine) which can be bought at health food stores. I've been using Aveeno anti-itch cream for the itching and also taking showers with an Aveeno body wash for itching.

I also had spine surgery in April and have had to have alot of x-rays for that and other things. I read on the internet that trauma to the spine and xrays can precipitate a shingles occurance. Why do we have to go online to find out things that expert doctors should already know? I'm going to print out all of your comments and hand it to the dermatologists receptionist and tell her to get educated!

Oh my god. I have had this for over 3 years now and i can tell you IT IS ON BOTH SIDES OF BODY. I only hope some doctors read this.
Especially since other people are having the same things happen.

First i had it on the middle of my back. And than i had it again on the back. Then it showed up on the right thigh. I still have a redness patch there. Looks like a red birthmark.

That was over a year ago. Now i'm getting them on the left and right side of my forehead. And let me tell you. First its burning, then its like stinging needles going thought the burning area.
Then it is streaks of head migrane pain.
Then finally it turn to blisters and the pain
stays for at least a week. Then is get a little better. But not much.

I've seen 3 different doctors on this case. And
they all said it was not shingles. That's bull!!!!
I was prescribed neurotin, and and antibiotic. Which was started during the blister period of the out break.

I mean to say common DOCTOR'S. You can get shingles on both sides of the body.

If anyone else has these simptoms. Post here since im the first since 2008. Now being May 2010.

I can confirm I have had shingles on several occasions and this last outbreak was on both sides of my trunk - granted, one side was itchier than the but the outbreak was all at the same time and the blisters are exactly the same.

More anecdotal evidence with me, a healthy 47 year old male. Mine started with extreme itching without a rash under my left nipple 5 weeks ago. Then 2 days later, the painful blisters. I get frequent outbeaks of eczema (the itch that rashes), so I waited 3 days to call my GP..until my topical corticosteriod cream didn't work and more blisters developed all over my upper back in the typical band. To my astonishment he diagnosed shingles and put me on
antivirals and Tramadol. The latter did nothing but put me in a stupor. The worst pain was in a second band from my underarm to just under my shoulder. Incredible burning, much more intense than a 2nd degree burn.

After 3 weeks, slow improvement began. My GP said I could resume normal activities, which for me is 5-6 vigorous aerobic 1 hour workouts a week. I decided to slowly build back up, then a few days later, I felt lousy and a few new very itchy blisters on the OTHER side of my upper chest. He's baffled..."it can't be shingles...must be follicalitis". Looks like shingles, feels like shingles. More antivirals...rash is clearing...but I'm paranoid. This illness must be a product of Satan.

A few days ago, a friend my age said he gets outbreaks every couple years on BOTH sides of his body since he was 22. Anywhere and everywhere.

My heart goes out to all of you sufferring. I wait for the next rash.

Dear Troy,

I too have had shingles now for about 6 or 7 years with very frequent recurrance. Fortunately my doctor diagnosed me right away the first time because of concern that it could reach my eye. It started off on just the right side opf my scalp, under my hair, then I began getting a few on side bridge of my nose very close to my right eye. My doctor prescribed some pill that did very little to help. My pain was actually the worst with my first outbreak, but occsionaly I get a sharp "zapping", sensation that feels like spidery tentacles extending out from the affected spot. Now it just seems like I have them constantly with barely any time between outbreaks. Sometimes it is just a couple weeks in between my outbreaks and now it is always on BOTH SIDES of my scalp. I have also notice that there are a few other isolated individual blister spots appearing on other parts of arms, and torso. I have had them long enough to know it is definately Shingles and not some other skin problem or acne. Since mine are fairly mild pain wise, I have not had the shot yet. I do worry though because they come back in exact location, close to eye and on scalp. It is weird on scalp because the location of spots on left is the same location and size of spots on the right side.
Hopefully, a better treatment will be available soon, as this effects so many people. And yes, SHINGLES DO OCCUR ON BOTH SIDES.

Does anyone else have this shingles problem?

My Shingles get worse with stress, and I can actually feel the shingles tingling and flaring up with burning sensation(not good tingly) when I get stressed or anxious.

So I always try to remind my self to stay calm and relaxed because it doesn't take much to trigger another shingles outbreak.

In fact, I seem to have them almost constantly, with outbreaks every month, on both sides now, with barely any time in between, even though I have made every effort to be more stress free.

Please let me know if this is happening to anyone else, and what can be done about it.

Thankyou

I also have had shingles on both sides. A kind lady Dr. told me so the first time with shingles 4 years ago. I felt like some one took lighter fluid, poured it on me and lit me up ! Ever since,(this kind Dr. has moved from the state ) my primary care Dr's say it must not have been shingles. I wish the pain on both sides for them. Today I have the breakout of shingles, I should have known ! The headaches can be like no other, muscle aches as before, and I feel like some one has cracked my elbow ! Nerve pain they say. Meds don't help, just knock me out ! I have scars on both sides to prove it does happen. Yes, we can have shingles more than once. To me, it seems to run in cycles.
Heaven help us all.

I totally agree on the stress trigger. I have linked it to when my "blood boils" when I get really upset. So I think I can control that part. But I am having an outbreak now that occured after an intense upper thigh leg cramp that I never experienced before. I get blisters on both sides of my body, always more on one but a few on the other and my doctor gets kinda mad if I say I have a few one the other side. I guess I'm going to a specialist to get more information.

I have had 4 outbreaks in 2 years I'm 43. I have linked the out breaks to when I get very upset and my "blood boils." My last outbreak occured after an intense upper thigh cramp that I never experienced before. So in my case, stress is the trigger.
I get blisters on mostly one side, but always a few on the other. Mostly on the buttocks and down the back thigh, knee, and calf. A few on the face once and a few around my elbow once. I have a cluster on the center of my lower back this time too, like right at the base of the spine which is where the virus supposedly hides out.
I don't seem to get any pain, just itchyness, which I think I ignore pretty well.
The pink Calamine lotion helps.
My wife did not have chicken pox and has not been affected yet. My son had the chicken pox vaccine so hopefully he is OK.
My doctor wants to get me the shingles vaccine, but he wants to wait a month after all blisters go away. I think I will go see a specialist since both sides is so rare.

Valacyclovir, Valtrex, seems to work for me. No side effects and the blisters start drying up in 12 hours. I have taken it twice and both times after 3 days and still had fast results. My second outbreak was small and went away without drugs and did't get big or spread.

I'm 40 yr old woman suffering from shingles. I have in on my neck, ear, scalp, & now it's creaping up my jawline & down my back. I've been to my doctor & he prescribed valacyclovir. I'm not a pill popper by any means, but right now I think I would take anything in sight if I could ease this pain.
Thank you so much for your input. I've made a list of products and I'm going to go get whatever I can get my hands on today. I've never experience the twinging, piercing pain that I have had & I'm only on day five. I'm just thankful I'm on summer break.
Thank you again for you help.

I was told last thursday that i had shingles. I'm a healthy 35 year old.I went to A&E on thursday night as it came on the wednesday and was very itchy. The doctor firstly said it was an allergic reaction to something but she went to get a second opinion and a more senior doctor diagnosed shingles. The hospital told me to take piriton and ibuprofen but that didn't work so i went back to my GP on Monday. He gave me Aciclovir tablets and amitriptyline. It is still very painful but the spots have started to heal so I'm hoping by next week i will be well again

I am awake and in undescribable pain from shingles that are finally breaking out. Let no physician tell you that they can't be on both sides of body at the same time. I have lost count how many times this has happened to me and both sides have been biopsied at same time and they are shingles...old ones, new ones and at times just one big family reunion of them all!

They are on both buttocks on top of sacriliac nerve both sides and my spine also and several other places both sides, behind the left knee and above the left leg.
I see doctor again in a.m. for B-12 shot and documentation of "both sides". I am wearing pain patch as I type on right buttock, taking Darvocet and I used Capcacin on open wounds when I do not have pain patch on surround area. Believe me, the Capcacin feels wonderful on the open sore because it deadens to some degree the shingle pain itself.

Before I broke out I was bedfast for two days and nights with chills and fever and severe exhaustion. So cold that I wore full-length winter sherpa gown and full-length fleece robe over top of that and any air that went over any uncovered part of my entire body -- for any reason -- not just the affected area but the entire body was painful when air touched my skin anywhere. Lots of tears shed those two days and nights.
We're had high temps here high enough to have on air conditioning while swathed in full-length winter apparel.

When they finally erupt the pain eases some but very minimal. I am more functional after eruptions but this time since nerves on both hips are affected it is very difficult to walk and keep my balance.

I've had shingles so long no anti viral drugs help in fact they prolong the time frame before eruption thus more painful.
The B-12 usually gives me more oomph to complete daily chores and functions but bed rest is best...thank God I live alone with no set time schedule for chores or requests by family.

My first outbreak of shingles was in 10th grade high school and they were in my throat. I am now 66 years old and no ! time has not made the pain less or outbreaks easier....sorry, newbies to shingles, I'd love to tell you otherwise but nope...it is what it is the pain from H-E-double L that I wish on no one.

Just stay calm as you can, rest, rest rest and keep yourself as comfortable as possible...Epsom salt made into a paste and applied directly on to erupting shingle can help also. Hang in there fellow shingle friends. This too shall pass..........only problem is they DO come back and come back and come again and again. Mine stay beneath the skin 24-7 and least little thing can make them flare, being upset and overly tired are most common triggers for me.

Most painful to me when they remain beneath the skin and burn and itch like fire and make surrounding tissue and muscle so sore. There are times the embeded shingle makes a swollen, hot, red itching area as big as my fist.

Oh, well, I'm alive to complain about them though so life is not that bad afterall. PJ

I am 51 years old. I run every day and play tennis 3 times a week. I've been felling very well. I went to the mountains (mountain biking) and when I get back I started felling these tingling pinches under my arm (armpit) and I thought that a spider or something stung me. Three weeks before I was stung by a scorpion that makes me not sleep for two days and I was afraid about the symptoms and I looked for several minutes the mark but I could'nt find anything. I continued with my activities next week (playing tennis, running etc) and 6 day after the rush appear on my chest, armpit, back and my armpit started swallowing a lot. I went to urgent care and they diagnosed this horrible sickness. I have never heard about it. They gave me Valtrex. The eruption last 1 week and I was so desperate to start exercising again I started playing tennis 8 days after the eruptions, but I just felt weak. I stopped playing for one more week but I still having pain and I fell weak. Do you know if excersise can affect or give more chances to heal? Thank you

Went to a dermatologist, he took a biopsy of two blisters and found no shingles virus. His best guess now is that it might be foot fungus related. My feet don't seem to be cronic, don't even itch and my nails are not discolored. So he wants to see me asap if I have another outbreak to see the rash in its early stages.
