My husband was told by his dermatologist that he had shingles. Previously he had symptoms for about a week.. The doctor sent him to pain management at the Cleveland Clinic. they gave him a nerve block and the pain disappeared. Two months later I. Got shingles. I couldn't get an appointment with his doctor so I went to my internist and he used the routine rx. Something with clover in it. So 3weeks go by and the pain was as bad. jim got me into his dermatologist and I was sent to pain management where I too got a nerve block. The pain disappeared that same day. Thank god That same day the pain disappeared. I have been told that nerve blocks do not work if you wait too long. I hope my experience and my husbands will help someone who is suffering. I know of people whose shingles never went away and that is so sad. I don,t know why doctors don,t know about nerve blocks for shingles.

There is no cure for shingles. The pain of shingles can last for weeks, months or even years after the blisters have healed. Early tvreatment with medicines that fight the virus may help. These medicines are also used to prevent lingering pain. The new shingles vaccine, called zostavax, is only approved for people over 60 years old and it is still only effective for about half of the people who have been vaccinated.
