I have scabies. I have been to five different doctors and the ER room begging for medication. Finally I got a tube of Permethrin. The doctor told me she would give it to me to "humor me". Of course, all of the nurses recognized it right away. I put it on tonight and thought this would cure me...then I found this site. I am devastated that it is going to take months to get rid of these little free loaders. My arms and legs are nothing but scabs now. I am going on vacation in two weeks (the first vacation I have had in 12 years) and can't even put a bathing suit on looking like this.

How did I get them? None of my kids have them and my son sleeps in my bed half the time (he thinks a ghost is staring at him at night in his room).

I just can't stand it any more. I want to sleep. Just one night.

Sigh

No it doesn't mean you will not get rid of them for months. Everyone seems to react differnt to these things. If you apply the cream properly and clean your enviroment properly you shouldn't have that much problem. Read up on the info here there's a ton of great info and the people here are absolutely fantastic. Just stay positive and do your best and hopefully it will all be over soon. Don't worry too much and stick to the treatment you choose and battle them away. Look around the forum for the different treatments that worked for others and don't be afraid to ask questions. Best of luck to you Sleepless.

Hi sleepless, I'm sorry you have to deal with this but your kids and anyone or pets in the family must be treated too. This is very important and could mean the difference between a month of treatments or several months.

Treat now and I would stock on treatments and treat everyone while gone on vacation.

When the house is empty the mites won't have any hosts and should all die. Set off a few Raid Fumigator bombs when you leave to give those mites hell.

Permethrin 5% can be purchased on the internet. Sulfur 10% can also be purchased or ask your pharmacy to make some up for you.

Make sure you and the kids take lots of showers, especially at night, and scrub them down with a brush or loofa to remove suface mites which tend to roam on the skin in the evening.

Good luck and as Tick said ask questions.

Thank you both very much. Can I buy Permethrin over the counter? I used my whole tube up that the Dr. prescribed for me (I went nuts and even massaged it into my scalp)? I had a hard time getting the Drs to even listen to me about having scabies. I never knew the little creeps were so common!

When I wash this off tomorrow morning I was going to wash the bedding and run the sweeper and dust. Is that enough?

Thanks again!

Permethrin 5% is Rx but it can be purchased online without an Rx. Topicals must be applied from head to toe, including scalp so it's ok that you put it on your scalp. But now you don't have enough to treat again in 7 days. If it's scabies, repeat treatments are necessary to kill any hatched mites. Permethrin 5% does not kill ova. Unless the family is treated too, reinfestation is likely. Find another MD who will Rx treatments for the entire family and won't patronize you and make you feel worse than you already do.

Yes, wash all the bedding and put the pillows in the dryer for at least 30min.

Thanks, I will order another tube online and see if one of the kid's Dr. will call one in too.

When I woke up this morning I was itching in a spot I think I missed. Did they move or am I just being paranoid? I was itching in the usual places too (which disappointed me).

Vets dispense Revolution and Advantage Multi. These products can also be purchased on the internet, some companies require a prescripion from a vet. If fleas are also an issue in your area, Advantage Multi is a better product for flea control. Actually, I think Advantage Multi is even a better sarcoptic mite treatment but that's just what I found. Revolution is also excellent. The treatment is Bi-monthly for existing infestions instead of once a month. When you are sure the mites are gone it's probably a good idea to keep your cats on a prevention treatment of 1X month. These products also kill many types of intestinal worms, but not the tape worm caused by injesting a flea.

Advantage Multi is a new product in the US and is not labeled for treating mites, however it's the same ingredients as are in Advocate which is sold in Austrailia. Advocate is labeled for treating sarcoptic mites but it's not sold in the US.

Deadfleaz.com has the best prices that I've found for Revolution and Advocate. I have a big and cats so I need to watch every penny.

Itching after treatment is normal. The mites debris is still under the skin causing a reaction. Keep your skin super moisturized, especially after a shower. Some walmarts sell a sulfur product in a little jar, I forgot the name. It's 10% sulfur and will kill mites if used often. Check near the pharmacy section. It's a Spanish name. Help please other posters who know the name of this product.

Hi saw your post thought id try and help, scabies is a perfectly treatable skin disease permethrin is extremally effective at killing the mites the stories of super mutated scabies etc are rubbish the reason a lot of people suffer for a long time is the skins reaction to the permethrin as it aggrevates the initial "alergic" reaction and sustains it for quite some time, due to my work i come into contact with scabies a lot ive personally had it 4 times and treated succesfully so dont worry a cool head is your best weapon.

Thank you. I have been worrying because I seem to go most of the day now with only a few little itches (and what seems like some new bumps in new places) but when I lay down to sleep I get that intense tear your skin to pieces itching all over again. This was making me convinced that the treatment failed. I tried to keep my skin moist with lotion after hot showers, but that makes it worse. I found that rubbing alcohol works best for me. I am trying to find a place online to order the 10% sulfur cream now.

Thank goodness I found this board!

I ordered some more Permethrin online (but it will take forever to get to me because it isn't being shipped from Canada but rather the UK). I also ordered a 10% sulfur cream. After an entire day of fighting with my Dr's office, they called in another tube of Permethrin. I also got my son's Dr to call some in. Now I can do everyone. My itiching is pretty bad today. I am hoping it isn't them coming back.

I've went throuh 4 tubes or 5 percent Permethrin, order sulphur cream from Naturasil twice, only to find that I must be allerge to it, I broke out with hives really bad. Is there anything else I can use, cant go back to Dr. I dont have health insurance. I wrote my PCP,asked him to call in a prescription or Iver and Lindane shampoo or lotion(explaining my situation). Leaving my contact info. that's been about a month in a half, So I made a appointment, but they wouldn't give me one until middle of June.
