Allergic Reaction to Permetherin Cream HELP!

Last December I did 2 treatments for scabies with permetherin cream 8 days apart. The scabies seemed treated the first time, but after my second treatment I had an allergic reaction and had a contact dermatitis rash from the top of my neck to the top of my feet (everywhere I put the permetherin).

I still have the Irritant Contact Dermatitis. I have seen many doctors including a dermatologist, and I have tried many topical steroids as well oral steroids. The steroids help when I am on them, but as soon as that round of steroids is done, the dermatitis comes back. I am currently taking the max amount of benedril (sp).

I never had an allergic reaction to anything before, and now I have had this for over 6 months. If anyone has had this problem or knows of anything that would work, please help. I am going crazy because of this. The steroids have done horrible things to my body (pushing me into cushings syndrome) and has impared my immune system so much, so I hate going on them.

Please help! 6 months of itching is driving me crazy, and when I go to my doctor now, he looks at me and says, "So what do you want me to do?" because he doesn't know what to do about me.

BTW, it is not scabies, it is a contact dermatitis rash from the permetherin cream

Hi Sonny,
Have you tried any other drugs beside Bendril? Just so you can get a good night sleep without the hangover. Allegra or Atarax. Your doctor could give you a prescription for these. If he can't then try another doctor. I understand how frustrating it is to itch all the time.Did the scabies go away after using the Perm cream? MIS

I've been off and on of atarax 50 mg. It helps with the itching, but the allergic reaction is still there. Yes, I was cured of the scabies the first time. The rash isn't like the scabies rash. It is called a raised eruption rash.

I'm going back tomorrow, but everyone is stumpped by my Irritant Contact Dermatitis from the permetherin.

This is what I have, this is a discription of what webmd says about a serious side effect from actin (permetherine cream):
"A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing."

I am currently a full time student, mom, and I work, but unfortunately I am on State aid, so the health care I recieve is not great, and often medications are denied because of cost like singular. Oh, BTW i am also using claratin once a day, but the antihistamines just barely keep the rash at bay. I have to start another round of steroids tomorrow because the rash is getting unbearable again, so the steroids will get rid of it while I am on them, but as soon as that batch is done, the rash gradually comes back starting on the most sensitive parts of my skin (the parts that don't see sun light) then to my rougher skin again. Its always the same, and I don't know what to do. I am tired of my skin stinging every time I sweat, and that never even happened when I had scabies.

Permetherin damaged my skin, and I don't know what to do any more.

I have found this on my web surfing tonight:

"A 49-year-old man was prescribed Nix (permethrin) for scabies on 2 occasions one week apart for 12 h [Finland]. After treatment, itching worsened. The patient developed more widespread nummular erythematovesicular dermatitis on the limbs and trunk within 4 weeks. He showed partial improvement after treatment with Sibicort cream (hydrocortisone), Locoid (hydrocortisone-17-butyrate) and ultraviolet therapy. However, his dermatitis reappeared after stopping such treatment. Patch testing was performed and positive reactions were seen at D2 and D4 to formaldehyde (preservative used in Nix) and at D2, D4 and D7 to tixocortol pivalate and hydrocortisone-17-butyrate. He was then recommended to use formaldehyde- and formaldehyde releaser-free skin care products and cosmetics and not to use hydrocortisone or hydrocortisone-17-butyrate creams. After this, he had no further skin symptoms."

I am going to the doctor tomorrow to get on another batch of steroids, but this seems like it might be right. I have been using a body wash that contains Quaternium-15, which is formaldehyde, the whole time, so I will soon find out if have just been allergic to it soon.

BTW, this is my second health problem that doctors have been no help with. The first time it cost me 2 1/2 years.

Doctors don't do their homework. Do your homework when its your health,'cause no one else cares enough.

I had the reaction too. The first time I used perm, it seemed fine. But, the second time I woke up to find a flat red rash covering my upper chest area. I was wondering if anyone could be allergic to perm. I guess I know the answer now. Actually, I never had any bumps 'til I used the perm. I'm thinking the perm caused the bumps. Maybe the doc is right, and I don't really have scabies.

There is a very small portion of the population that is allergic to Perm. If you are allergic to Chrysanthumums then Perm (what Perm is made from), then Perm is not for you. It would help to go to a store and smell their Chrysanthumums and see if they affect you being around them. It's a small number people, but allergies are a possibility.

Try using a soothing non perfumed lotion on yourself for the time being. Coconut oil is also a good ointment. It's solid when cold, but very soothing. So sorry, to hear about your rash, as if this wasn't bad enough already.

hello,

i feel your pain because it has happened to me more that twice and its hell .. my doctors recomeneded me oatmeal baths and oatmeal body creams for itchy, damaged, infected skin. he also perscribed me a medication called '' teva-hydroxyzine 25mg'' 4 times daily to prevent itching my skin/body. it took me almost 1 week to see the results .. for some people it takes 2 weeks but it works if you use the cream daily 3-4h times aday and after showers/baths along with the medication . you just have to Stop scratching for good even though its hard to fight it.

good luck!
