My husband went to his doctor today to get a prescription for scabies for us and he came home with the over the counter 1% permethrin lotion. What a joke. The package doesn't even say that it is for scabies but for lice. Furthermore, we already tried the over the counter products, and it didn't work. I want to scream and not stop screaming. By the way, we tried bombing our house twice to no avail. Does anyone know a bug bomb that might work? We are also thinking of taking a short vacation to Bisbee to visit haunted places while we use a rented ozone machine on our house. Ozone is supposed to kill everything. Is there any value in spraying a combination vinegar and alcohol on furniture and wood floors? Thanks for all your posts Welty.

Hi, Welty. Itchy here. I found a website called earthclinic.com and they have a treatment for mites for pets that consists of borax and hydrogen peroxide. You need to get the exact recipe from the site though.

By the way, do you think that microwaving clothes will kill mites? What about an ozone generator?

yes, it will, but be careful how long you put things in the microwave. I use it for my sneakers.
yes, an ozone generator will work, too. but you need to buy one with a very high count of ozone, an expensive one, as the cheaper ones don't work that good. one poster on the birdmitesorg yahoo group has 2 of them,$2,500 each for a total of $5,000.....!!! Also, they are dangerous and you should not use them while you are in the house.

I am not sure this would be very good for a cat. cats always clean themselves and would ingest all this stuff. I did try this on my dogs. It was a little toxic on them.

My husband is going back to the doctor on Monday to get the correct medication since the idiot doctor gave us the 1% permethrin last week. We are now bathing in borax and hydrogen peroxide and apple cider vinegar and sea salt. Then we cover ourselves with castor oil. The castor oil definitely kills the surface ones. We have ordered the sublimed sulfer and are waiting for that to come. Also, we used revolution on our pets. Lastly, we are going on a two week cruise since we think they can't survive more than 2 weeks in our house without feeding. Actually, we plan to stay away 2 weeks and 3 days total and bomb the place as we leave. Also, we will treat ourselves everyday on the cruise, request fresh sheets everyday, and only wear clean clothes everyday. We are going to take a jumbo sealable bag for our dirty clothes. Hopefully, this will work. We are so fed up with this problem. Now I think what we have might be walking dandruff since our pets have been affected as well as ourselves.

ok, itchy, get some hydrogen peroxide, take a shower, wash infected skin with mild soap, rinse well, and then pour hydrogen peroxide on infected areas, then rinse again, then lightly towel dry with paper towels and paint infected area with iodine, you can find iodine at any drug store.
next cover infected skin with sulphur 10% creme ,found online or at any drugstore or make your own 10% creme from flowers of sulphur. Do this every nite FOR A WEEK OR A MONTH untill your infestation is gone. If you are rich, alternate with 5% permethrin creme, elimite.
START THROWING AWAY INFESTED ITEMS IN YOUR HOME, IT IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND INECTION SOURCES SO EVERYTHING MUST GO, LEARN TO BE A MINIMALIST. " A MINIMALIST "
Follow all the cleaning and washing instructions and get on a heathy diet that cleans you fom the inside out.
You can overcome and kill these lil bast-rds. Start treatment today.
Good Luck

I thought we had bird mites once too back in 1989. I had someone come check my house. It ended up just being scabies.

Help. I live in Sun City, AZ and there are lots of birds especially quail. I believe my house is infested with bird fleas and mites. They turn into little black specks when I apply grapefruit seed extract to an itch. My poor dog is suffering too. The vet didn't know what it is but recommended frontline. That worked for about a week. I wasn't able to get a dermatoligist appointment until the end of July. I wake up, put my clothes in the washer with vinegar and hot water, spray myself with grapefruit seed extract, vacuum the whole house, clean the floors with vinegar, soak in epson salts and finally put on clean clothes. Most of my clothes are now in vacuum sealed bags. I've bombed my home and my car all to no avail. In the evening, I put the clothes I've worn in the washer with vinegar and do another treatment on myself before getting into my pajama's. I spray and steam clean my mattress and pillows everyday. Today an exterminator came and sprayed the inside of the house with an organic product, and used something stronger on the yard. Yesterday, I found the website birdmites.org and after reading through it, I was ready to shoot myself. My suffering is inconsequential, but to see my little dog itching, tears me up, Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've had Scabies 4 x's and I can tell you, you have to do more than you are doing to get rid of them and it sounds like Scabies my dear. Dermotologists are a waste of money, I've been to several.

Hi Itching, If you really think you have bird mites, then get your pet on Revolution and Program both. They can work together well on blood feeding mites, which bird mites are. The Program is an Insect Growth regulator. It takes a few weeks but the mites that bite your dog won't be able to reproduce and the population is severely reduced. Meanwhile, the mites that bite your dog will die from the Revolution. These things are not as good for Sarcoptic mites, which feed on flesh and may not get any blood at all.
For that, Ivermectin seems better, if your pet has been affected for long. Converesly, Ivermectin does not work well for blood feeding mites. So, get your dog on both and he will help you get rid of these things, since they like to bite him. Or her. This is one case where it might be good to have your pet actually sleep with you. If they are bird mites, you can put some Tanglefoot on your bedposts. It's a garden product an oily substance in a tube that will keep them from climbing up if they are living in your baseboards. It traps these guys and suffocates them. Your bedposts are a good place for it, but won't get any living in the frame of your bed. Those maybe try orange oil like DeSolv It. Orange oils still work on mites. But think about tenting the whole house, treating the dog with Program, and Revolution and keeping him or her near. Hope you get over this SOON. Let us know how you are doing.

yes, my dog has scabies, and the revolution is working. It takes 2-4 weeks for the old skin to grow out and gets way more itchy before it stops, it is an allergic reaction to the fecal matter thay left behind. I have it too, all over, and i have 5% permetherin and it is working but I had to keep it on all over for 12 hours then wash it off

Oh- I had to get the 5% by the doctor/prescription, the 1% only works for lice! He also wants me to see a dermatologist, and I brought him the meds I wanted him to prescribe to me...he had no idea what I had!!! I am not wasting any more money at the doctor, this stuff better work-i'll repost when/if it does completely!

I have found that either lavender oil or tea tree oil works great. Just 8-10 drops in your bath water each day. Dust on lavender powder after drying off. ALso use the borax mule team in the laundry. Get a spray bottle and put 10 drops in it and fill it up with water. You can spray it on your furniture, carpets, clothes, shoes and yourself. It will not stain or damage the material. I have a spray bottle of bleach water and a bottle of alcohol. Only use the bleach water to clean cabinet tops, and hard surfaces. Vacuume daily, change bedclothes daily, and mop floors daily with bleach water.
keeps socks on your feet. I thought I was going to go crazy!! It helps to pray too. Helps you keep your sanity.

I use the tea tree oil in the spray bottle of water to spray furniture, carpets, etc. It is safe for your fabrics. I also sprayed my window blinds each day. Even when I get rid of these pest, I will continue to use the tea tree oil to bath and spray everything. I spray my furniture after company leaves. Also vacuume furniture often.

I know these posts are older and hopefully all have been healed..But for the people who are just experiencing this and are told by everyone that they must be delusional.. I just wanted to add that DEET works at repelling these mites.. it states that it does not kill them but I have seen at least a 70% improvement in my skin in just 3 days of using it.. some sites say it does kill them.. I know it doesd but not all of them.. however it has only been a week so I cannot say long term . I am able to sleep at night without taking any sleep aides and I woke up all on my own at 7am and felt wonderful.. the first time I have woke up not exhausted or drugged up feeling since this all started months ago.. I still aply benedryl cream when I feel I need it... For anyone who does really have the Scabies mite (not this bird mite) you can buy permetherin in high percents at tractor and supply stores for $19.00,(its for farm animals and their stables)to treat your house and car.. and you can still use the DEET.. Permetherin will not work for the Bird Mite though, but will help keep them at bay...
I read a post to spray yourself with listerine and your car, house floors and walls with windex.. it provides a coating that they get stuck in while it kills them.. This guy did this diligently and finally they were cured and free.. They had it a total of 9 months all together. they sprayed listerine on them at night and were able to sleep well and kept windex in their car and at their office to spray their desk chairs carpets etc before they left for the day.. sprayed their car only when they got out of it not in..(just information that may help you) I have not tried that yet but will start tomorrow..
Also I read to put dish soap on to stop a bite in its tracks.. I did and it works very very fast.. downside it my sking dried and cracked very bad from it and the red sore still developed.. it did help in the immediate need though ..
So far DEET is the Hero for me and I can say it makes sense if there is a bug on you spray yourself with a bug repellant.. what a concept.. wish I knew that sooner.. I know not everyone wants to use a 'chemical' want only organic homeopathic remedies.. I say the other things I have tried out of desperation have been worse than the DEET could ever be.. and I plan on doing cleanses and detoxing when I am through with all this..to help my body repair any damage.. I also ordered Ivermectin over the internet and will be using that shortly.. I believe the DEET and Ivermectin will be the end to this .. And I wont have to include a parasite cleanse later because this will take care of that also..

To everyone suffering.. Please use Deet you will be Amazed and Relieved like I was.. at least long enough to have a sane thought for your next move..
I wish you strength and healing..

Hi Colleen. Did you order ivermectin from MagicPharma? Let us know how it works etc. Am ordering also shortly. Desperately hoping it works. Spent $600 on two appointments at dermatologist who was more interested in prolonging appointments. Suggested six more appointments and told me at last appointment he would most prescribe 2 doses. I walked out.
