Was reading the bird mite website and these mites can live a very long time without the host. They also can feed off of humans and not just birds.

http://birdmites.org/mites.html

Although parasitic bird mites need a host mammal to survive and reproduce, research has shown they can survive for extended periods without a host. One Swedish study reported D. Gallinae can live nine months without a host. Several other studies confirm that they live at least eight months without feeding. NFM can live several weeks without a host.

2Scratch, don't read the birdmite site - it even made me want to puke!

Mary, since you don't get the burrows and rashes maybe you do have bird mites.

I read through some of the posts on the forum and think some of those poor people have scabies.

I have read posts on this forum where someone has opened a suitcase after three weeks, and felt mites crawl on them. Another one posted wearing a shirt after a year, and got mites on them. Sam, maybe you are right. Maybe there is a mutant mite out there, or those people may have had bird mites or rat mites. Every time I read a new website, it drives me nuts. This bird website says that the permethrin doesn't work on bird mites; neither does the ivermectin.... auggghhhh!!!

Mary, since you don't have the rash but just red bumps, and you don't get bit during the day but you said as soon as the sun goes down you get bit up, I'm thinking it may be that you don't have a parasite on your body, maybe the bird mites or whatever mites are just biting you and going to hide during the daytime????????? Whaddya think?

They wiggle around in the daytime, too. It's just that they are more active at night. I probably have dog mites or cat mites. I don't think they show the burrowing lines either. I don't know, but I do know I have a mite problem and I can't get rid of it, no matter what I do. The one thing I haven't done is HIRE AN EXTERMINATOR AND TENT THE HOUSE. I have read that people tent their house and still have the problem. I know it will be over $1,000 to do this. I need to do it anyway, because of termites.

I haven't researched those meds yet. No $$$ right now. But I will look them up soon. It takes 2 weeks from abc, maybe a few more days. You should get the paste real soon, so you can take that first. It's just as good as abc, anyway. It's all ivermectin, just in different forms.

Bird mite site from the dept of medical entomology Australia. Says they can't burrow into humans but can create lots of misery until the infestation in your home is taken care of.

I know. I read it over again to understand that. Could be that because there are not that many bugs out, because the bugs cannot live without water, that it makes the birds unhealthy, because they can't find any bugs to eat, and then their health starts to fail, and then the mites attack sick birds, I don't know.

Hi,

In a horrible twist of events (I have extreme anxiety problems and OCD) a guy that I went on two dates with called me last week to tell me he has scabies. I am currently waiting it out to see what happens with that. The even more messed up part comes from the fact that my dad called me today to tell me he picked up a baby barn swallow that had fallen from it's nest. After he did this his hand was swarming with mites. Even after he washed his hands there were still mites on his shirt. I'm so upset because even though I don't live with my parents I visit them a lot. At first I was worried about spreading scabies to them (if I haven't already) and now I'm worried about going home and getting bird miteS! My question is, if I went home to visit them would the bird mites infect me and could I bring them back to my apartment, would they establish a colony in my own apartment? Or is it more of an environmental thing?

Thanks. I'm so upset I can't stop crying thinking about how I will not be able to visit them for 8 months or however long bird mites live.

We have an infestation of bird mites from a feeder outside the kitchen window. Problem is, my husband is completely unaffected. I am the one who hasn't slept in two weeks, and now they have gone internal. He thinks I'm insane, and so won't do much to eradicate them since he can't see any around. I am on the edge of a nervous breakdown, or suicide. I was wondering if Ivervectin has been effective?

I recently became infested with bird mites, and these things also went inside my body. I ordered Ivermectin from Canada and used it about 3 times. it works better it you use the pills at the same time you use the Permethrin cream. Today I am free of bird mites. The pills are used according to body weigh. In addition to the cream and pills, I began taking magnesium, zinc, garlic, and B1 pills. Bird mites stopped crawling on me about a week after I began taking them. To get rid of the mites from my hair I mixed tea tree oil with olive oil and put it all over my head. I let it over night(used a shower cap). To eradicate the mites from the carpets, mattresses, and couches I ordered a Hann Steamer from QVC/model V300079. The steam is over 200 degrees and kills these annoying things. I washed all the bedding and clothes with ammonia, borax, and soap for several weeks. Every load of clothes was soaked for several hours and sometimes all night with hot water. I also used the hot setting when drying the clothes. It took me 3 months to get rid of the bird mites from my house and my body. I once felt like killing myself too. But I can tell you that it is possible to kill them. Today I am free and happy. If you need more ideas on how to handle bird mites let me know.

I have repeated infestations on my body and things over the years. Everytime I touch anything that was inadvertantly missed or my sister who has the bird mite problem, came to visit i would get infected also. These particular mites are EXTREMELy resistant as my sister threw all and every toxins she could think of. I am thinking of getting the dog permethrin which is 45% and putting that on my body. will that be toxix to me? the human prescriotion is 5 % only. Please tell me some one! This is the 7th time i have gotten infested and goes upi my sinuses and is in and around my eyes too! I am taking ivermectin 12 mg per week and intend to do so for 6 weeks. Do you suggest that i buy a steam vac for the carpets and I think I am being reinfected from my car which i spray with pronto every day and have plastic and sheets on seats and which gets changed. I also spray the seat belt in detail before i pull. please let me know someone! I am been at it for 6 weeks and i am taking my dental boards pretty soon and failing to study the way i should for all this disinfection every day! Thanks!
