Thank you to the people who passed along the bleach bath info-- I finally slept more than 2 hours a night for the past week now since starting the bleach baths. The exfoliation of the skin while in the tub is a critical part of the treatment, I found a stiff brush and work the itchy areas until they stop itching and start burning from the bleach-- that was the very last time they itched. Also 5 CAP fulls of bleach (not cup fulls) is lots. The mites do seem to migrate to the hair to escape but i solved that by scooping the water into my hair while trying to get as little as possible on my face ( as it does seem to burn there). Changing bedding and clothes every day is critical-- We sterilized everything by putting it outside for 2 days before washing ( its -20 outside most days here now). I am not saying this will work for everyone. I believe everyone has to find a treatment that works for them, these creatures are incredibly adaptable, so whatever treatment you try you have to go in prepared and commited the first time because if you dont get them all, they will adapt and you will have to find something else that works and try again. Dont give up hope. Thanks to all the people who post here.

Hi everybody, so I find that bleach baths have been really helpful in providing relief and dare i say it, hope that in a few more weeks of consistent treatments i'll finally be free of these itchy critters from hell.

Here's now I do my treatments. change my bedding every two to three days. I shower like I regularly do with a moisturizing body bar and a fresh white rag. After showering and rinsing off, I then fill the tub with hot water as hot as I can handle it. I add one quarter cup of regular chlorox bleach and a healthy sprinkling of baking soda and soak from 15-20 minutes gently exfoliating with a rag in the water (this feels good on the real itchy patches). I pat dry but do not rinse the bleach water from my skin. Finally I rub aveeno non irritating body moisturizer all over because the skin does tend to get dry.

If I'm itching particularly bad after a few hours I'll use a bleach spot treatment of one cap full to three parts water and a cotton ball and just pass it over the itchy spots and let it air dry. It might sting a little if the area is active and you've scratched but even with sensitive skin I've been able to bear with the sting enough to forget about it (somewhat).

Anyhow that's what I'm doing and it really truly god's honest seems to be working so i'll stick with it and maybe add a few sulfur soap washes during the week as an added measure (as it can't hurt!)

Hope you all find relief soon!

I'm going to give everybody a solid solution to their problems. It's tough, it may sound unreasonable..but if you're in the position I was- it's worth it. May I remind you, that this will not damage your skin as I have been topically using this method incorrectly for over a month in very harsh ways and I have seen no adverse effects. It works if done right. You MUST moisturize your skin. If it is not working for you, you are not being aggressive enough.
The fact of the matter, is bleach kills mites. It kills us if ingested in pure form. I remind you all, that household "pure" bleach from the bottle, is diluted. I never recommend adding pure bleach to your skin. If you are to spot treat, it is better to dilute bleach to water in a 1:1 ratio, and then cover the spot with a paper towel for 10 minutes and then let dry.
You must do this regimen for 4-9 days, however I recommend the latter for complete treatment. It is paramount to your success that all surfaces are bleached and/or steam cleaned. An iron or steamer works best for all surfaces. A vacuum with a filter can also be used on your mattress and linens, and it itself can be bleached.
Add 750ML chlorine bleach to steaming hot bath water.
Take a sturdy brush and go over your entire body to create small abrasions for the bleach to penetrate. This also brings them to the surface. You must take your time and thoroughly go over your body. If you do this once right, theoretically one bath is enough. Soak in the tub for an hour. Use baby soap and shampoo. Alternate positions to ensure penetration. Get out, air dry completely. Apply moisturizer. Apply anti-scabies cream(s) if you wish. I didn't have to. Clean all surfaces and always use gloves!
May I add that all tap water is chlorinated. Household bleach is toxic, however if you have scabies on your lips you can submerge your face underwater and breath through your nose. You will not be absorbing any more chlorine than you would from an accidental gulp at a swimming pool. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misconstrued information in circulation about bleach. It could be solely to advocate sales on other products. I am unsure. What I am sure of, is that my better half is a biologist and chemist. If you are smart, and use your head this can pass.
If you get out of the tub, and do not feel like you just took a swim at the YMCA.. you're doing it wrong. You will find out that the scabies will persist if you do not fight accordingly. Wish you luck.
Things to know:
-Take a multivitamin to fortify your system.
-Bleach drys your skin, you must refortify it with moisturizer.
-Flax seed oil has been known to help. Neem leaf extract has been known to inhibit the reproduction of scabies.
-Adding sulfur to your bathwater or topically works. They cannot build a resistance to it or bleach. When used incorrectly, the scabies will persist.
-Isolate everything you've been in contact with.
-Stay strong. You are not the first, nor will you be the last.
I've been suffering for 2 weeks now?!! I hope the bleach works. I just don't have money for the other products. My husband and I both have it. We got from our kids. I work in jeathcare and know nothing about it, but being hopefull.

I have been dealing/suffering with scabies since August 2012. I think I contacted it at a nail salon. I am in a loving 25 year marriage. No one in my family of 5 has been infected. I have had 3 doses of Perm. Currently taking Cyroheptadine 2-3 times a day. I have had Prednisone shots and pills. I am losing the fight. I itch all night long and wake with bleeding sores. I used to enjoy going out, wearing sleeveless tops, socializing with friends. I cannot go to the gym as the sight of my arms and back are alarming. I struggle with my work as the medication makes me tired and the itching and crawling feeling disrupts my thoughts. I have had 5 Dr. appointments. Two different dermatologists, an OBGYN and my GP. They send me home with creams and lotions and pills. I have spent hours washing my bedding and never wear clothing more than once. I spray Lysol where ever I sit. I now have a prescription for sleeping pills just to make it through a few hours of scratch free sleep. I am desperate to have my life back. I am not the person I was. Please tell me what to do.

Dear losing hope... Your story brought tears to my eyes. It was like hearing my own story. I have suffered with this for almost 4 years. I have turned into a hermit, wear long sleeves even on the hottest of days . I am a critical care nurse. My itching started on my scalp and over time has spread. I have been to dr after Dr. Diagnosed with everything from a to z. So many pills and creams. I don't sleep and like you, wake up with bleeding gapping sore skin. My heart goes out to all on this forum. Just trying to find new ideas. Traditional treatment obviously isn't working for me. Very sad .

I had scabies for about 6 months. My doctor prescribed Elimite cream and it worked....then it came back. Why??? My doctor told me that I need to tell EVERYONE I had contact with to get treated. Not just sexual contact. Even a hand shake or a simple hug can pass this very infectious skin disease. How in the heck am I supposed to tell everyone I came in contact with for the pass six months that I have mites on me. I feel like I'm never going to get rid of this :-((

this is something I stuggled a lot with the guilt of passing it on. What I finally decided on was to anonomously tell people I had sexual contact with using fake email adress. and saying something like I work with you and wanted to let you know that I have this so they wont be able to trace you...basically the main thing is that scabies is bad enough there is NO need to also suffer socially for getting the mite it was bad luck you did nothing bad to get the mite. I would love to help you more if you wanna message me

It's very possible that it came back because you have a different infection that has similar symptoms. Mites carry a variety of infections that they can pass to you that have similar symptoms. So if you had mites and got rid of them then you are left with an infection with similar symptoms. The biggest mistake people on this forum are making is to conclude that it is definitely scabies. The majority of people do this without an adequate diagnosis. Regular doctors aren't very good at diagnosing this. Dermatologists are worthless, you need to go to an MD who is an infectious disease specialist. Some of these infections are bartonella, babesia or borriela.

I have been diagnosed with scabies and I am mortified. I was told it is passed from skin to skin contact usually during sex. This can not be the case for me as I havent been well so havent had sex for about 2 months. I have been prescribed Permethrin. I put it on 2 days ago then washed it off after 12 hours (yesterday) but in the last 15 hours my bites have tripled. Does this mean the cream didnt work. PLEASE HELP ME get rid of this as all sites i look at people are saying they have tried everything and had it months. HELP, HELP, HELP
You have my sympathy - but at least you have a correct diagnosis. I have had two doctors who have told me I do not have it but - believe me - I do. I have tried everything and nothing has worked so far. I am sick of cleaning, washing and using Lyclere/permetrin. Tea tree oil seemed to help but they just come back.

Bleach baths or even spraying the skin with undiluted bleach is not, I repeat not a cure! As Augustmidwest states above, bleach baths provide temporary relief but that's it. You must begin a treatment regime that does cure. If you have had Scabies less than six months I suggest oral ivermectin with topical permethrin, preferably Advantix 2 Blue with 45% permethrin. If you have had Scabies loner than six months you should probably check out the oral homeopathic remedy using arsenicum album and sulphur, or the topical DMSO regime as described on other Topix Scabies Threads. Anything else is most likely a waste of time. The scabies mites of 2012 are extremely resistant and difficult to cure.
my brother has just been diagnosed with scabies and we have had a little contact with him for the past two days. He has also picked up my two dogs and petted them. He also showered in our bath and I need to know what to do to disinfest my house, my shower, my pets, and my husband and me. I hugged him briefly when he came here to visit and have washed his bed clothings. I need to know if I need to take medication also. Also do I need to get my dogs examined or take to the vet for medication? Can I spray my shower with bleach or peroxide, etc.?

I would tell your doc that your brother has scabies and that his doc told him everyone needs to be treated. They should give you an rx for p-cream. I would clean your home with bleach. Your pets should take revaluation. Look up a cleaning thread it will have more cleaning tips

I got scabies this month doctor had prescibed me Lindane shampoo. The Drug Stores here can't seem to get it in. I actually did the bleach bath and didn't know what I was doing I just felt like bleach would kill anything. I was itching so bad and bout out my mind. I filled my tub with hot water as hot as I could stand it and poured bleach in my water as much as i could stand the smell. The itching is down and I'm feeling much better. I have washed everything in my home with hot water and bleach. I got these from my job. My job have used foggers to kill them. Going home tonight to bleach bath again. Glad to see others think like me.

I just got diagnosised with scabies this week but have had this rash for at least 2 months. I got the oral medication which is supposed to kill them. How long till you get relief? Also I feel like my itching is way worse !! Are these things dead or still alive! I'm freaking out because idk if its in my head over thinking this or if they are still crawling over me ( which I didn't realize until I was getting treated)
