Quick borax question

Anyone know what I might be able to use as a substitute for Borax in the carpets/laundry? I'm starting to think I'm having an allergic reaction to it and have read many things that say it can be pretty caustic. Would baking soda do? I did read gold bond powder, as a repellent, but I know it won't dry them up & kill them. Even if it's just to give myself a 'borax break' and see if it is irritating me as I think it might be....
Thanks in advance!!

I Can't Take This,
I use lots for bleach because Borax drive my skin nuts if I use to much. You could try Benzyl Benzoate but there is a slight odor to it. There is a link called Washing with BB or something like that. Read up on it before you use it.
Has any one tried Castelle soap?
You made a good point about Gold Bond, I may try that next. If you try it, let us know how it works for you. Have a nice weekend. MIS

I was wondring about the borax because I have read about skin & respitory reactions but geez then why would it be used for laundry & cleaning? However, one article said it's ok if used as diected, just don't sprinkle it all over with abandon, which of course is what we do.
I've put gold bond on the couch but it is with the borax so not sure on how it would do alone.
