I can't seem to find much information about how stromectol (ivermectin) actually works.

I have two doses each 14 days apart but I don't exactly know how the pill kills scabies.

Is it immediate? Does it last for a week killing them? Does it take a while to start working?

Starts to work as soon as your body metabolizes it
It lasts about 48 hours in your body and works during this time, but more towards 4-12 hours. So, don't shower for a full 48 hours after taking ivermectin. Should be taken every 7 days for about a month. 14 days apart is too far, as the eggs hatch out every day and not all the mites are the same age.
And does not kill the immature mites which do not have a fully developed nervous system.
the med paralyzes the bug.
and why did you change your name here and post the same exact post twice?

Thank you Jeannie,
It's really odd that they don't explain the protocol anywhere, I finally talked to two docs who gave me a similar answer to yours saying it lasted about 30 hrs in the body.
I just reposted Freshbytes question cuz I didn't see an answer, so I'm a different person, I just had the exact same question so reposted it verbatim.

There's evidence to suggest that ivermectin is unreliable for treating scabies. http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/87/6/08-0...
A single application of benzyl benzoate ($7 OTC) is what finally worked for me, after all the internet remedies had failed. If the BB didn't work then 5% pm was my last choice but I wanted to avoid that because apparently it's a neurotoxin.
Don't persist for too long with the essential oils/bleach/borax remedies. If you're not cured in a couple of weeks then move on to the pharmacuticals. Nothing nice kills scabies, as the saying goes, and whatever it happens to be, you don't want to expose yourself to it for longer than necessary.

There are many studies showing Ivermectin to be a safe, effective cure for scables. I wouldn't discount it based on the single survey mentioned above.

To be effective, Ivermectin should be taken two or more times, with the doses a week apart. This is what the CDC recommends.(As far as I can tell, in the study mentioned above, it was only given once.) Ivermectin doesn't kill eggs, which makes it all the more important to take more than one dose.

In my experience, Ivermectin is most effective when paired with a topical medicine, such as Permethrin, Benzyl Benzoate, or Malathion (Derbac M). This is what my dermatologist recommended.

Ivermectin is especially helpful when a scabies infection goes to areas of the body hard to treat with topical medicines - the scalp, ears, nose - and the eyes, which can't treat with any of the topical medicines.

ivermectin stays in the blood 24 hours so don't bath after you take it it needs to be concentrated in the skin. read my beating scabies post, it will help you to understand what your up against

Hi I had scabies and pem (lyclear) didnt work, I used it many times, I tried bleach bath with hydrogen peroxide, borx and hydrodgen peroxide, clove oil(which burnt, tea tree(that soothed) and then ivermectin( dosage depends on your weight) first dosage with permithrin 5% lyclear at same time then 7 days afterwards second dosage and lyclear.
beleive it or not but that worked, they were all gone, however my itch continued and I felt my backside crawling and pimply nodules still appeared. It was apparant that I was highly allergic to the many pesticides, as i had sensative skin, I dont really have sensitive skin I just get rashes sometimes, anyway I also burnt my skin due to the toxic treatments, my scalp crawled as well. well i stopped taking the baths and the pesticides, and things are settiling down, I know I dont have scabies anymore, but I thought I did as my symptons of allergic reaction were very similar, and my dermatologist advised it can continue for 1 year, however things are getting better now. My derm told me he takes ivermectin tablets - two dosages and permithrin 5% at same time and he has had scabies 3 times and they go straight away, I also highly recommend that course of action immediately. good luck they are really terrible and I thought nothing would get rid of them but it was the allergic reaction to everything I was doing making me think they were still there and I can absolutely guarantee they are gone. thanks for listening and i hope this helps some people as you can cure them.

It is taken orally and in most cases only given to people dealing with advanced cases of scabies such as norwegian scabies.

Ivermectin comes out through the skin. It takes 12 day to leave your body. 6 days is the half life so the second dose should be taken on day 7. This comes straight from the pharmaceutical book on the drug.

It can clear up scabies all by it self if your willing to stay with it for months. Take it every 4 days for months it will work. The trouble is the eggs need to hatch and eat to get the poison leaving more scares and itching. The out breaks will get smaller and smaller.

@Jenny- but was your crawling sensation the feeling of actual bugs trying to get into your nose, mouth, eyes,& ears? I think just crawling & itching is definitely part of post scabies but what I feel as night comes is definitely bugs;/. I really wish it wasn't.

The more baths you take the higher you push the bugs right to your eyes and nose and mouth.
The more you have on your head the harder it will be to cure. Use tape to catch some then go to the doctor this is not something to play with. Lindare is the only real cure for scabies and eggs. So powerful is this drug that's it banned in 53 country's

I have talked with four Scabies sufferers who tried Lindare and none were cured by it. Topicals simply do not penetrate the skin deep enough to eradicate all the female egg layers that rarely leave their burrows. There is no getting around the combination oral with topical treatment regime. Topicals alone do not cure these days.

How long did the ivermectin take to work> Did you see results soon after taking the medicine or did it take some time?
