I saw a Walgreens nurse-practitioner 3 days ago (8 days into my scabies ordeal). I waited 8 days because I attempted to self-medicate but it didn't work--maybe because I didn't know I needed to wash the bed sheets in hot water to prevent re-infestation of my body.

The nurse-practitioner prescribed 5% Permethrin Cream.

I haven't washed the 5% Permethrin cream off yet (it's been on for over 3 days now). I also augment it every once in a while with some 1% Permethrin lotion (Nix) which I apply to small spots here or there when I feel itching or a stinging sensation.

This permethrin stuff definitely has neurotoxic effects, and maybe even cardiac effects. I noticed the first neuro effects sometime after 14 hours had passed. I've felt a little sluggish at times and it's been harder to read at times, even after applying just the 1% Nix. Maybe the permethrin is accumulating in my body?

I read that the permethrin doesn't penetrate into the body past the skin much, but maybe that's no longer true after 14 hours?

Should I stop applying the 1% Nix and how long can I wait until washing the 5% Permethrin cream off? I am hoping to keep the cream on until it's time for my second application of the cream 5 to 7 days after my first application.(Three days have passed so far.)

Thanks and God bless.

Oh my gosh who told you to leave that permethrin 5% cream on for that long? You are supposed to wash it off after 8 to 14 hours then reapply in 7 to 10 days for the same amount of time. The longest I have ever heard of anyone keeping it on is for 24 hrs. I am just woundering why you thought you was supposed to leave it on for that long? I treated my family with the same stuff but you have to clean your whole environment too or you will keep getting reinfested you have to wash all your cloths in hot water and dry on highest heat or bag them up for a while their is alot more to it than just treating yourself. All of these things has to be treated to be successful, mattress, carpet, couch, towels, and cloths. Ok Aaron and Jeannie help me out here if I left something out yall are way better at telling people how to get rid of these things.

-You'd better believe that it is in your bloodstream!! Get that stuff off, and don't treat with anything for at least two weeks.

-I'm NOT AFRAID to say that there is NO REASON to beleive that you and your family are not cured-WAY TO GO MOM!!!!!!!!-I also DID want to say that, IMO, benG and Netherlands are very intelligent, cool, calm, and collected people They have in their own way an INCREDIBLE tolerance for the wrath of others here. Sometimes, it takes more guts to walk away than to fight. And I found them to be VERY interesting-and I mean that in a very good way. THEY are the good guys. Follow your heart Amy, and do what is best for the children, and yourself.-Also, SIG, I WANTED to help you more, but you do need to see the Docs to find out what could be going on with your skin. It could be many things. PEACE.

Thanks Jeannie and Amy for your excellent, helpful information. I have to admit I stupidly kept the 5% permethrin cream on for 5 days before washing it off. Definitely a bad idea. Wish I'd come here first to educate myself.

all i want from these forums is to hear information thank i cant get OFF EVERY OTHER FUCKING WEBSITE!
on the other hand im sure wash everything and rub on the creme is all you really need to hear.
clove oil is a good way to take away the itch plus the mites hate it.(keep away from eyes armpits and ball sack llol beleive me)

what should be used to disinfect items like shoes or couches quickly?

My family is infected. We all treated Friday, but were up with our daughter after only 3 hours sleep, so went back to bed after she finally fell back asleep. So we all kept it on for at least 18 hrs before we bathed. Some of my bumps are worse and even itchier today. My daughter's face cleared up a lot yesterday, but today is swollen and red all over. We washed lots of clothes, our bedding, and towels in hot water, and put our mattresses into bags that we sealed with packing tape. The bags are thick plastic mattress bags from a mattress store. My question is did we leave the permethrin on too long for it to work properly, and is it normal to have the rash get worse a day or two after treatment, but the cream really did kill the mites? I'm terrified that it didn't work! Thanks in advance.

Hi, we are going through it here, too. From what I have read, you cannot get scabies from animals. We went through a treatment of Permethrin 2 weeks ago, and retreated 5 days after initial treatment. Then, we treated with lice shampoo as well. And, 2 days ago, I noticed my kids itching again. Not only has the scabies returned worse than before, but 2 of my kids have lice now! It is Christmas day and I have been picking nits out of hair for 24 hours. I was so carried away with doing that, that I forgot to wash my 6 year old son's medicine off of him! Oh dear Lord...please let him be okay! Praying that we are no longer infected with this horrid disease.
