I've heard so many stories about how this treatment or that treatment doesn't work...

but I have not yet seen one successful story with just the use of permethrin.

Does it EVER work?

Please say there is hope. I'm currently an unemployed student with no income... all I have is this free clinic and what they prescribed [permethrin 5%].

Can I get an easy success story, for Chrissakes?

Daveed,
I think it depends on how soon after you get scabies before applying permethrin that determines whether it is a "total" cure or not.
I don't know how many tubes and of what mg the free clinic prescribed, however it seems to be more effective applied DAILY for at least 8 days.
Rub it in from neck to toe, leave it on for 12-24hrs, wash it off and exfoliate while washing it off, then reapply again when skin is completely dry, dress in clean clothes and repeat every day for at least 8 days.
I am not an MD or RN, however it does seem to be more effective applied this way than using the standard 1x application "repeat in 10 days if necessary".

Bitten, did you have a doc prescribe that routine? daily for 8 days? That's really interesting, are you following that and did they give you enough for it?

This is what the Dr in the pharmacy in Mexico told me. At the timeI did not have the $ to buy enough for 8 days (even though it was only $3.78 per 120 ml of Scabisan Plus lotion) so I am going back tomorrow to get more.
I am wondering though if I should switch to BB. Also I have been thinking about trying Kleen Free as a topical, however I have only seen one post saying that it worked.
Another thing, is the Stromectol from ABCMedics much more effective than the much cheaper horse paste?
Do we get what we pay for with this stuff???
I really need to get rid of these critters before the temperature around here starts hitting 110 on a regular basis....

I can give you a bit of good news. Mites do not do well in hot dry weather, they dry up easily.

The only problem is that people do not dry off easily in this hot dry climate.

Get some ivermectina too - it's hecka cheap!

Bitten what do you think of the scabisan plus? I hate that stuff! Both the lotion and cream. It makes my skin all over feel tingly and numb and cold and goose bumpy. Even when I don't put in on my face, the systemic reaction makes my face feel this way too. And it lasts for about 3 days after washing it off. I much prefer the Elimite.

Doctor really said use every day for 8 days!?

"Sam",
I have been going to this pharmacy, and this Dr, for about 2 1/2 years because I don't have health insurance.
To date he has not given me bad advice or an ineffective treatment. At one point I was 95% sure I had pneumonia - I was SO SICK and the abx medication and treatment I received from this Dr literally saved me from being hospitalized.
In short, I have no reason not to trust him, and yes he said to apply it daily, wash it off and reapply it every day for 8 days.
Scabisan does not bother me the way you describe it bothers you.
I have never tried Elimite. When I first ordered permethrin 5% on the internet I received "Nix" cream at $30 per 30mg tube.
Dear God, I this sh*t will be gone!
While I was in the pharmacy today I asked if they would ship Scabisan to the US and the answer was "Yes".
This pharmacy can be contacted by email at:
medixpharmacy@hotmail.com
Send an email for product/price/shipping info and they will respond along with payment details.
While Scabisan may not be the preferred tx for everyone, it is certainly affordable and vastly better than doing nothing!
If you have any questions the Dr. at this pharmacy will respond to your questions within the limits imposed by correspondence alone.
Please remember that I am posting this because so far, my experience with this pharmacy in Mexico has been positive.
I am not trying to generate sales and/or business for this pharmacy or anyone associated with this pharmacy. I do not receive compensation in any way, shape or form if anyone were to order anything from this pharmacy.
I just think we need all the options and connections we can get!

Hey my post timed out? Thanks Bitten for the info, very helpful. I'm not sure I need another round of permethrin, but like you I just want it gone for good. Are you using Scabisan or Scabisan Plus? Lotion or cream? thanks!

Hi Bitten, I know you had posted this before and thanks very much for posting the resource again.

I hope this round brings a cure for you. Be nice if you could score some Ivermectina too.

I have not used Scabisan but I looked it up and I'm posting the details for the two meds in case anyone wants to order some from the pharmacy.

it's important that folks apply full body including face and scalp. The scalp has been a real problem area for many posters. Permethrin is a slow kill so 24 hrs. would be fine with me.

Yeah, I'm starting to find more burrows around my wrists and hands... which is scaring me hardcore.

I don't even know what else to say. This is a straight crisis and I don't understand why doctors don't take it more seriously. Did the free clinic doc really think only one tube would clear it all up for good? Especially after looking at my case.. Jesus.

I can't wait for this all to be over. It's seriously hindering my life.

Thanks, though, all.

Guess what?
It is seriously hindering all of our lives.
If I hadn't found this forum I think I would have gone insane.
It is astounding that the medical professionals in the USA brush this off as a trivial inconvenience, or something of no consequence.
As it is, I am afraid I will have scars all over my body from this crap, not to mention any potential long term effects from smearing myself with pesticides on a regular basis, let alone ingesting medication meant for horses!
Go figure...

You will probably need another treatment 7 days after the first treatment. I think the "use half a tube" is an excuse for the pharm company to make more money. 30 grams isn't enough coverage for an adult. Go back - get more.

I hate this so much.

I haven't had sex with my girlfriend in almost 2 months because of this.

Goddammit.
I am so frustrated/depressed.

This is like the worst and only time in my life that I don't have health insurance. Not only do I have moderate scabies problem, but I need to see a dentist as well... and NOW I think I'm getting strep throat. Why is this all happening at once!? And just as I started a great relationship...

FUCK!!

Daveed, get as much permethrin as you can from the clinic, rub it in really really good, leave it on 24 hours, do the cleaning and laundering all the time, get some disposable gloves to use when peeing as the mites are mostly in the hands and feet although those areas may not break out like the more sensitive body areas.

Your girlfriend may need treatment too, even if you haven't had sex in a while.

Yeah..I've told my girlfriend that I want her to get the treatment, just in case. Sometimes I notice her scratching her arms, but I can't see any distinguishing marks...but then again, isn't there something called post scabies?

Well, either way, I'm going to ask the doctor at the free clinic to at least prescribe me 2 refills of Permethrin. Then I need to save a few bucks and do a shitload of laundry and borrow a vacuum from my friend.

The doctor also suggested that I steam iron my mattress.

Also, I did like 5 loads of laundry when I first got the elimite... but I may have overstuffed the machines because most of my stuff was still damp when they came out of the dryer.

Am I wrong to assume this is not good?

You are at war with mites now, get aggressive. Bone dry cloths out of the dryer, lots of showers, stay very clean!

this home treatment has helped me, especially at night. rub half a lemon all over your skin after a shower and let it dry, it's not a substitution for meds but it seems to repel or kill off some surface walkers

I itched for several months before getting any visible rashes or marks. See if you can get a cheap vacuum from goodwill or something - it will become your best friend. Vacuum daily or you might have this forever. Clean your bathroom really really really good with bleach or rubbing alcohol. don't forget the disposable gloves for your hands while peeing.

Staying and being generally clean people has caused us problems from the beginning because the actual symptoms of scabies take longer to manifest in a person that showers/bathes/shampoos daily.
If you are not in a position to wash and thoroughly dry all of your laundry on a daily basis, pick at least 3 days worth of critical clothing, towels and bedding that can be washed daily with hot water, plus bleach/borax/ammonia and dried on the hottest setting. If your items cannot be dried in a hot dryer, choose things that can be bleached.
Seal everything else in a plastic bag (min 3 days, I say 1 month) until your symptoms and your environment are under control.
P.S. Your Dr lives in a dream world - sure we all have time to steam iron our mattresses daily - along with our sheets, towels, underwear and every other item that may come in contact with our skin!!!
