Permanent Retainers

Hi everyone,

I had braces as a teenager and when they got taken off (age 17) I had permanent metal retainers glued to the back of my teeth. The top ones don't bother me so much, but the bottom ones are really annoying - every time I eat food gets stuck in there because the gap between the retainer and the teeth is pretty large. I'm 23 now so I've had it for 6 years, and I'm almost at my wits end; if I go out for dinner without some kind of toothbrush my mind is occupied with the feeling of food in the retainer, it's extremely annoying. I've been thinking about getting the bottom retainer removed, but the orthodontist really doesn't want to do it, he tells me it's for life, or at least until I'm 30. What opinions do you guys have? Should I get them removed? Will the teeth move?

About the bottom retainer, it's glued to 2 teeth on the side with 3 in between (so in total it spans 5 teeth, but only the 2 on either side are glued). That's what makes me think they might not move, considering only 2 of the teeth are glued.
