Recommend best type of retainer?

Howdy all,

I know nobody can say anything definitive, but I was just wondering what people's opinions are on the best type of retainer?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm in my mid twenties and am planning to undergo orthodontic braces for the THIRD time. All to correct one pesky tooth.

When I got my first brace the problem tooth was way out of alignment. After I finished and wore my retainer (it was like a clear plastic thing), the tooth drifted back out of alignment a little bit. Got the second brace, tooth straightened, wore another clear plastic type thing and, again, it drifted a little. Bear in mind I was wearing the retainers faithfully, thank you very much.

I've been looking up fixed retainers that are bonded to the back of your teeth. Despite hygiene and maintenance issues I'm thinking of just asking for one of them after the third brace, just to try to make things as foolproof as possible this time.

Any suggestions?

hey there,
sorry you've had so much trouble with that one pesky tooth! i would definitely recommend stearing clear of the clear plastic retainers if you havent had any success with them thus far. Sometimes the plastic molded retainers that have metal wires across the front work well because your orthodontist can add springs and other devices to the mold to help keep especially pesky teeth in place. I experienced a bit of this same thing with a bottom front tooth and had a little spring behind that tooth in the retainer. I've never experienced the fixed retainer before, but i guess my first question is what really differentiates this fixed retainer from braces? other than its on the back side of your tooth and even more difficult to clean...

i would definitely talk to your orthodontist, OR maybe even get a second opinion from another orthodontist in your area - the one you've been visiting obviously is having trouble providing you with a long-term solution!
