I have 2 wear a retainer now ( i have 2 use a top one full time, but lately have been noticing shifting when I stopped wearing a retainer). Based on what a lot people say you should wear you're retainer how you've been told. I just figured out today when my orthodontist told me that you have 2 wear retainers for LIFE!!! though later as you grow up you can start wearing them @ night. Even just 2 twice a week. YOU WONT REGRET IT BECAUSE THEN YOU'LL END UP WITH BEAUTIFUL TEETH.:)

For those of you with gaps, you can wear your retainer after not wearing it for a while and your gap will close with some temporary pain. Wear it for two days straight.

Wearing your retainer after occasionally wearing it for merely 2 days 24/7 will straighten your teeth again! When I decided tO use his method, my teeth had shiftEd so much that my retainers did not align in many places. I jammed it onto my teeth anyway. Lots of pain. But after a night, it already fit better. And after 50+ hours of wear around the clock, it is fitting better now than each time I've had it on during the last two years of occasional use!

I haven't wore my retainers for about a month. When i popped them in, I discovered that if I pressed down the top most part of the retainer to the roof of my mouth, the right band around my molar moves downwards. What should I do?

So I got braces when I was 15 and wore them til I was 18. I didnt think my teeth were right when my orthodonist took them off, and I mentioned it and he said it was fine. They were straighter, just not perfect and they still stuck out. Well I just turned 20 and my teeth are how they were to begin with. I wore my retainer for about 3 months but my teeth were shifting even when I wore my retainer. They had to re do my retainer twice and it still wasn't right. I had braces for 3 years trying to align my bite, but it wasnt my teeth, my jaw is out of line.( I go to a chiropractor and seen the X-rays) not to mention my wisdom teeth have came in and the orthodonist never said anything about getting them removed or it messing my teeth up. I had a horrible experience with them. I was going back every 2 weeks to get a bracket glued back, they would just fall off. Can I get them to re do them for a cheaper price considering they didn't fix them correctly the first time?

So, my braces was removed after having it on for 2 years since January 2010(I'm 22 now). My orthodontist asked me to wear the retainers 24/7 for 6 month, but like most of us here, I did not do so. I've never seen her since then.

After a year plus(yesterday), I've noticed that my teeth have shifted quite a bit. So, I grabbed the retainers my orthodontist gave it to me a year ago, and started wearing it for most of the time. The pain is killing me but let see if that will work.

Will update you guys soon.

My essix retainer broke and my gap is coming back. The problem is that my orthodontist did not keep my teeth mold too make a new one. If I want a new retainer, I would have to make a new mold of how my teeth are right now but why would I want a retainer that keeps my gap?

If u can still get it in and it fits a little u need to wear it only to bed till your teeth fit in it then wear it all the time and get back on track. Id say u need to wear it

It have been 1 week since I last posted.
The shifting of my teeth is not that obvious anymore. I only wear it for 22 hours per day.
As long as the retainers still fits, you should wear it. It might be painful for the first few minutes, after that, it will be gone.

Hi, I'm 18 and I've had braces for 5 years since I was 12. About a year ago I got them off even though I still had about 1.5 cm gap between my teeth... my orthodontist said it wouldn't matter that much. I was meant to wear my retainers all day and all night for about 2 weeks and then just at night, but I realised that when I put my retainers in at night it felt like my teeth had moved and it would hurt, so I ended up not wearing them, time went by and now its been 6 months since i last wore them and I put them in last last and it hurt so bad!!:/ a couple of months back I missed my check up appointment with my orthodontist and she sent me a letter saying that my treatment is complete. Does that mean I can't go to her about my retainers?? what should I do??

You need to see your orthodontist. it makes it difficult for an orthodontist to treat you if you're dishonest about your ability to follow instructions. That being said, definitely get back in there and be straight with them. "Hey, i messed up, i didnt wear my braces. I learned my lesson. How can we fix my teeth now?"

They may need to make you a new retainer, or they may need to reapply the braces for a while depending on the severity of the move. Either way, follow their instructions this time!

good luck!

I saw my orthodontist this week and fessed up to not wearing my retainer for 8 months. They had a look at my teeth, took a mould but then adjusted the mould for the couple of teeth that have moved. It kills to wear which he made clear it would...but he says after 4-5 weeks wearing it full time, they well be sorted. I can tell by looking at it that if my teeth end up like the retainer then they will be straight again. It cost me $210 ($35 out of pocket after insurance) but that's way way less then more orthodontics if i leave it for 5 years. Moral: go see them and be honest that way they can find a suitable solution to your situation

I got my braces off in February 2012.
My last Orthodontist visit was three months ago.
I got told he no longer needed to see me because my teeth where fine, so after that I completely stopped wearing them. I couldn't be bothered putting them in!:-(

So yesterday I noticed my gums where bleeding and had concerns I might be getting gingivitis. This prompted me to begin madly taking care of my teeth and hence, wearing my retainer.

The top row of my teeth barely moved in the three months, I think 1 slightly moved.
The bottom row dramatically moved at the front.
It HURT LIKE HELL when I put them back on, at first they didn't fit very well on the bottom row but now they do. The pain was intense for 15 minutes but now it's not bad.

Hope they go back to normal!!:-)

I swear everyone does this and has to learn the hard way. We all think it won't happen to us.
If you start wearing your retainer, you literally have to wear it 24/7. You can't only wear it at night because your teeth will shift back during the day. The amount of time to wear it 24/7 varies per person depending on the level of shifting.

My wisdom tooth on the left in the far back started growing a while ago. Although it doesn't hurt anymore, what it does do is keep biting my cheek, which doe hurt. I've been reading so far that extraction will solve the problem. However, they already removed 2 or 4 to put my braces in, so don't want to lose another one. Will wearing my retainers help solve this?

I only stopped wearing them, as I had an issue with my jaw which kept clicking and hurt more as time went on, as it did that. Should I wear them again to solve my wisdom tooth problem - all day or just night?
