Mitt Romney's promise to balance the budget without higher taxes while protecting retirees and spending more on defense means the rest of government -- such as meat inspections, food stamps, national parks and affordable- housing aid -- would need to be cut by more than a quarter.

The current size of government is unsustainable. Either this country goes broke which will be hard for everyone all at once...similar to nuclear bomb going off OR we make cuts now.

No one wants to touch social security. Where else are you gonna cut?

I mean seriously people get a freaking clue...

Perhaps Romney and others like him should pay their taxes. Then we wouldn't need to cut social safety programs. We would also have lower unemployment and higher economic growth due to the influx of money back into our system. Romney and the right wing are crooks and will be defeated in Nov.

he makes cuts for everybody with except naturally the richest, global bankers, criminal global war mongers, chefs of international corporations ( these get everything with cost cutting of everything ) by the way, he must have much, much money from national reserves to lead two or more wars just like he has promised. But it seems that US nation is proper for it, if such candidate was elected, promoted and is supported.
And the only normal candidate Ron Paul, who has said the truth, who has supported prosperity in USA and peace globally was rejected.

When the government fails due to Obama failed recovery there will be bigger cuts.

nobody has to touch social security to make it solvent.
we only contribute to SS on the first $110k we earn per year.
if they upped that number to $300k, or even $250k, SS would have enough.
and if $250k is considered middle class, then it's a valid limit raise.
.
as for healthcare, expanding medicare to 45 years old (instead of 65), and expanding Medicare to include all income levels, with premiums based on a sliding scale, would solve the "healthcare" gap in this country.
.
in addition, limiting bulk-mail rates to non-profits only would solve the "crisis" in the USPS.
.
.
.
allow ALL the tax cuts to expire, and let the chips fall where they may.
if a persons existence is based on a 3% tax change, then that person needs to rethink their financial priorities.
.
the federal government has actually gotten smaller under the current administration, anyone that tells you different is lying to you.

I'm on SS and would gladly take a 10% reduction if these idiots at SS would go back through the SSD rolls and kick off all the fakers, dopers, illegals off of the system. Plus go thru SSI and get all the non-citizens and phonies off those rolls too. If they show they are cutting the gamers off the system, then i'll take a 10% cut in what I paid over 40 years into.

You really do not expect a republicans to actually eliminate the waste and fraud in SSI. Medicare, and Medicaid do you? Republicans only want to cut cut cut without doing their job. Republicans have no idea how much waste and fraud are in the programs and have no idea what the true costs are.

Romney and Ryan cut deficit on the backs of the poor, senior citizens, and middle class while protecting himself and his wealthy contributors. Romney and Ryan contributors will want returns on their investments.

Do you know how SS works? The governments uses the rolls not like a some kind of bank but rather to borrow against. And right now there is not enough people paying into it. It is fast becoming where there will be more people on social security than is paying into it.

Explain to me how that is sustainable.

http://money.cnn.com/retirement/guide/SocialS...

Ah, the question everyone loves to debate. It's true that Social Security will soon start paying out more benefits than it receives in contributions, as the bulk of the baby-boom generation phases into retirement.

The government's official position is that there is enough money saved to pay benefits at the currently scheduled amounts until 2041. The Social Security Administration admits on its Web site that benefits will likely be reduced after that, barring changes that improve the financial strength of the system.

Some critics say that benefits could be at risk as early as 2016 or 2017, when Social Security cash flow turns negative. They claim that since the money paid in over the last few decades is part of the government's overall budget, it is available only on paper; other branches of the government have spent it and left IOUs. In order to pay benefits through 2041, the government would have to borrow.

{Yeah...real sustainable...}
