Not restricted to New Mexico. Read the article. The study was done in NM, but applies to long haul drivers who are, by definition, crossing state lines.

The real question is, Why should truck drivers be so susceptible? Next time you pull into an interstate truck stop, have a look around and see what's going on.

I'd like to know why this article of little importance except for pimps and prostitues made the front page of the local paper? And folks look indignant when I explain how unorganized I think the paper is and I don't want to subscribe.

How about a front page story on the nasty rumor about the high school having as many as 600 abscenes friday? H1N1 and this doens't seem to be a public health problem yet? maybe some of the "journalists" at the ADN can find a minute to put down the twinkies and do a real article once in a while, just think, If you actually write about news instead of a sub-culture of redneck breeding your circulation may rise!

The high rate of Hep C in long haul drivers was attributed to intravenous drug use, not sex. The incidence of other std's was much lower. If sex had been the reason for the high rate of Hep C, then there would have been a higher rate of other std's such as hiv, gonorhea, siphilis, herpes, hpv, etc. Still, knowing that 11 percent of long haul truckers are shooting up doesn't inspire a lot of confidence on the safety of passing a semi-rig. Be careful out there!

Good point, but it means the drivers had to be sharing their works. Doesn't seem likely.

Sex cannot be ruled out. Yes, Hep C can be transmitted through sex. I refer you to the studies being done in Amsterdam.

The presence in Hep C positive sex workers that do not have other std's is easily explainable. Workers who wish to continue working, know how to test and treat regularly.

Believe me, an infected sex worker would hit the truck driver's com circuit hot and specific. Tests are readily available for virtually all stds except Hep C. It is rarely tested for if at all.

I keep reading references to HepC as an STD. Hep C is blood born. It's pretty difficult to transmit it sexually.
I've had Hep C for about 40 years. Just diagnosed in 2005 or so. Been married to the same woman for 35 years. When I found out i had Hep C I had her tested, and since I do most of the cooking, our kids and grandkids as well. All negative.
I'm not saying you can't get it from sexual activity where there is an exchange of blood, but needle sharing, and unclean tattoo equipment are more likely causes these days.
There was no test for Hep C until the 1990's so a lot of people are carrying the virus due to transfusions and such who don't know and probably won't know until they manifest symptoms. I suspect Hep C is out there in epidemic numbers and the number of people becoming ill and being diagnosed will continue to rise.
Give the gift of life. Be an organ donor. I am here today because of one person's generous gift.

Contact DOT in your state. I cannot imagine why Hep C would keep you from getting your CDL. Good luck.
