We have tried multiple over the counter lice shampoos since June.
Everthing has been washed, dried, etc several times. Saturday, my son had a lot of lice again, so this is what we have done since Sunday: Son had his head shampooed with lice shampoo. We all got combed. Last night we had hair soaked in olive oil & wrapped in plastic. This morning, combed out hair with oil still in hair. Then, washed with Dawn dish soap 2x each to get out oil. Did a vinegar/water rinse. Combed again. Slathered thick conditioner on hair and left in. Blow dried hair on high heat. Can you all tell me what you think about what I did above? Also, I'm going to be making an essential oil spray to spritz on their hair in the mornings to try to deter lice from reinfesting. Anyone here done that and have any suggestions? |

I think that all sounds great! I'm looking for ideas for my own daughter and home. It's crazy to read all that people do, but when I found a few nits in my own hair tonight, I just about flipped. I mixed tea tree oil with mayo and wrapped our heads in saran wrap this morning. We look like a bunch of alien believers around here! I'm trying to avoid the poisons at this point. It's our first experience with it, and so we're washing everything that isn't nailed down in hot water (changed the temp on hot water heater) and drying it on high heat even though the articles all say that head lice don't leave the head. I'm not taking chances! Keep me posted on how your methods turns out!

First of all Olive oil treatments are fantastic for helping to suffocate the live bugs! And you're doing great by combing, combing, combing.
There also companies out there that will come to your home and help you take care of the lice on your children and on yourself. Nit Picky takes about an hour per person and we are a nationwide company. We use a natural product that helps dissolve the glue of the eggs and release them from the hair strand in conjunction with a manual comb out procedure... yes ladies, it all comes down to combing. Regardless of what products, concoctions, or potions you put on the hair, it all has to come down to continuously combing out the nits. nit-picky.com 877-888-2820 Servicing California (San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, Orange County, Los Angles, and surrounding areas), Colorado (Boulder, Denver, and surrounding areas), Nevada, New York |

Hi Mom2Two,
I sympathize with your situation. A few helpful tips: you need a very good metal comb like the terminator nit comb (the plastic ones are useless) and you need to use an enzyme based shampoo that is natural and non-toxic like LiceLogic's Head Lice Treatment Shampoo. They have a website logicproductgroup.com and have very detailed instructions on the correct way to do a thorough comb out and the information is free. Lastly, stop using the pesticide based treatments like Rid or Nix as they only make the problem worse as lice are immune to them. Hope this helps! Lice are a pain to get rid of! |

Are they gone now? What worked for me is nit-picking. Apply a good amount of conditioner on the hair and start combing using a nit-comb. A non-toxic head lice treatment works wonders too for it takes the burden of manual nit-picking |

my daughter had repeated episodes of head lice and I tried EVERYTHING and I was beyond the point of using more lice treatment solutions, over use of these solutions can become toxic !! I had reached the point of tears more than once because I was so frustrated and didn't know what to do next and then I ended up with head lice too !!!! After lots of reading and research this is what finally worked......alternate the daily hair washing, one day vinegar, the next day tree tea oil and keep combing with the nit comb after each wash, keep repeating this process until the lice are gone. The vinegar will loosen the nits from the hair and choke the lice out and kill them.. The tree tree oil will prevent new nits from sticking to the hair. Once the lice are gone keep up the treatment with the tea tree oil on a once or twice a week basis as a prevention. The vinegar and tree tea oil are non toxic and worked far better than any brand on the market that I tried to solve the lice problem...and believe me, I tried them all and none of them were successful. The over the counter solutions are also much more expensive, usually only enough for one or two treatments depending on how much hair and didn't work very well. The vinegar and tree tea oil is much cheaper and did a far better job. It is the only thing that worked !!!!!
