I had back sugery in oct 2011. And the sugery went well but 4 days home I developed. A fluied pocket the dr had to re open the wound and drain it then leave it open and I had to pack it with gauze for two months it didn't heal at all the wound was deep and I was tired of my husban having to stick a stick and guaze in there. So we went to our check up and the sugern came in and right away he said ur going back into sugery. So the next day I was back in sugery and a couple hrs later the dr said everything was fine no infection he didn't know why I was not healing. So he stiched me up and when I got home a domay went by and I had this awful pain in my back the area where the stiches was all red and swollen come to find out the dr tied them to tight they were ripping my skin. So a week went by and I went back to dr they took the stiches out and it seemed fine up intill a couple days ago I starting having all this pain to where I haven't. Slept in days we looked at my back there is a suture sticking out and all the skin around it is healed. And right above it there is this painful bump that hurta very bad. Thia has been going on for months it is now January. What do I do??

Right total knee replacement Dec 12 2011. Developed cellulitis within 48 hours from knee cap area to upper incision line and towards inner leg. Levaquin 250 mg/7 days. Pain with therapy that increased on week #4 and I noticed suture spitting from incision line. Two days later 7 spitting sutures with increased redness and painful pockets beneath them..full of, well infection as surgeon removed sutures. The pain was horrendous, and found out Vicryl used to close subcutaneous skin layer. Here I am three days later with a "field" of sutures popping through, looks as if a garden was planted in a neat straight row. On Levaquin 500 for 7 days, warm moist compresses as the first 2 areas draining thick milky exudate. Feels as if something is "crawling inside my knee and pain continues. going to file an adverse reaction report with FDA..get the Vicryl off the market please. Unbelievable.

I have RA also and reject everything that has been put in my body - dissolvable stitches (all kinds), regular stitches, staples, skin grafts, graft on my tendon that apparently no one else has rejected. You RA will see anything as foreign and attach it. My rejections don't usually show up for about a year to a year and a half. I am currently working with doctors to figure out how to handle the possible rejection of stitches used during a back surgery. It is very frustrating. You need to include your entire group of doctors when scheduling a surgery. My last two foot surgeries (to take out metal pins that were rejecting) the doctors had to leave open with a wound vac on it in order to heal since they could not use stitches. Be sure your rheumatologist has everything in your records.

I had a c-section in 2003, breast surgery in 2008.. I had the bladder sling procedure in 2009 and wound up with severe complications, unable to void post op; foley x 3 weeks, 5 wks post op I was showering and thought I had a string from a wash cloth and when I grabbed it I found that it was connected to me.. the result: vaginal tearing (the sutures never dissolved)then had to straight cath for 3 months.. complained to both doctors of continual pain and burning at and around incision sites.. I was educated on what fibromyalgia is and that I could just be very sensitive.. As a nurse I felt embarrassed, ashamed and maybe going nuts?? I thought I was losing it until late last year when I pulled sutures from both my breast and c section incision sites (yes sutures from surgery > 7 years ago!!!) now having a procedure to remove some of the tape used in the bladder sling surgery and follow up with the breast specialist to see if there are still sutures causing problems in my right breast... PS Vicryl sutures were used in all of the procedures

Some time ago I think in 2003 I had surgery foar an Umbilical Hernia. Naturally Vicryl was used and within one week the surface sutures began to look infected. I returned to the surgeon and his response was that I was allergic to Vicryl and don't worry because your body will force it out over time. I tend to trust doctors so I have continued to not worry. It is now 2012 and I just pulled a piece of suture out that is about one inch long. All the surface sutures came out quickly but the internal sutures have now been peeking out for 9 years. I have not done anything legal about this because I keep thinking that the current suture must be the last one. It would seem from this discussion that there is a number of problems with Vicryl that the medical establishment does not know about or prefers to ignore. AS for me, I am tired of pulling sutures out my belly button. Two things that I would like to know are 1)What is the rejection rate of Vicryl in common surgeries and 2)Are there cheaper knock-offs that might be being used by some surgeons (with or without their knowledge) that lead to these suture rejections. I have the last suture that I pulled and I will attempt to have it analyzed to ensure that it is actually Vicryl and if it is and there are this many problems involved with verifiable Vicryl then some course of action should be undertaken.

I had surgery 5 weeks ago to repair a snapped quadricep tendon and have just noticed 2 ends of a suture sticking out of 1 hole! It's rubbing on my leg brace and really irritating can anyone advise me what to do with it? Tried pulling on it slightly but it's solid!

April 2011 I had a number of hernia operations done at the same time. The surgeon used mesh to repair 3 of the hernias. For the umblical hernia he only used sutures. Over the past year 2 of the sutures have popped out into the belly button. They were removed by the surgeon. In the past week, i am experiencing a stabbing pain in the belly button area and there is an exsecretion of foulsmelling fluid. What might me happening?

The more I read about suture spitting the more I find it is fairly common. I had massive surgery due to an incident that caused me to have fasciotomys performed on my left leg. More than a year later I developed a purple bump on my shin which inflamed. I was put on antibiotics.....got better, then worse later. finally I had a surgeon open it. A small crusty (calcified) suture knot was located and removed. Problem solved (not de-solved :> )

My fiance had ACL tendon replacement 25 years ago and now the holes where the incision was made has opened up and is draining. A large blister like place appeared on the outer portion of his knee and now it is hard underneath the blister that was purple in color. The blister has begun to heal and now the holes where the scope were put in his knee at are opened up and draining a yellow fluid, not the color of pus. Any comments of what could be wrong. we were told by an RN friend that the cadaber tendon has started to reject. She stated that he should have had the tendon replaced after 15 years but his doctor did not tell us this. Any suggestions. |

I had surgery Nov. 7th 2012 to remove a 18 lb tumor that was attached to my right Ovary, from my abdomen. Because of this I also had a hysterectomy at the same time, 10 days after getting home the wound on my stomach, from my stomach was infected, I ended up going to a wound clinic and having to wear a V.a.c machine. One spot has still not healed and the say it is my body rejecting the plastic line used to close up my stomach from the large tumor. Its going on 2 1/2 months of not being healed. The wound clinic Dr, dug around in my wound and found and cut 3 small pieces of line out but it has been 2 weeks and still no closure. I'm really at wits end on this whole thing.

Breast augmentation, just spit vicryl from my reconstructed nipple. Breasts are less than a year old, this nipple less than two months. What am I doing wrong??
|
I had a breast reduction in 2000 and had my nipples reconstructed. Are you wearing a binder bra? And I was told not to do much for the first 3 or 4 weeks. But my sutures did fine with this surgery. My breasts are a little uneven, and my right nipple is painfully sensitive, not to happy about that. But it took a good year to be completely healed. Good luck! |

18 months ago I lost the entire left side of my nose due to basal cell carcinoma and had reconstruction...no problems.....36 days ago I had a nickel sized one removed from the center of my forehead....from the beginning it was a problem...everywhere the large black outer stitches entered or exited showed red welts and swelling....then the top half of the 2 1/2 in. incision began to heal...but the bottom has never healed...eruptions form with what looks like pus and then break leaving small holes...the surgeon says it is not infected????...he used monocryl 5.0 violet colored thread for the interior stitches....what is in world is going on????

I too..same thing. After 3yrs another seeping tunnel, that's what I call it. The first one took 2yrs to heal. Use me salt to pack inside the hole,(me salt)is one word. This is found at edge park.com it helps to drain the fluid inside the wound. Pack loose..inside the wound, leaving a small tail end so you can pull it out. To get inside the would cut off one end of q tip (so it leaves a small stick)dip that end into rubbing alcohol to sterilize. Cut one quarter of inch wide me salt bout the length of tunnel...Pack loosely ..cover with gauze and a abdominal pad..change once in morning and again before bedtime..changing to often will irritate the inside wound. |
