I have had the same knee (left) replaced three times in as many years!
(Suffered heart attack requiring triple C.A.B.G. surgery a month after 1st TKR -- lack of use after extensive recovery for heart made TKR unusable -- very, very stiff and painful. Second TKR was required because the side of tibia crushed down ((like smashed packing peanut)) requiring replacement.)
This third knee (now 9 months old) has an extra-long stem running down into the tibia (because of the bone issue with the second knee.)
When walking, after about one-half mile I develop a serious shin splint-type of pain in the operated leg at approximately the top of my sock (4 to 5 inches above ankle).
Does anyone else suffer with this same condition? Do you know of anything that will relieve the pain?

Hi,

I have the same pain problem. I had a MRI of my Lumbar spine. My back was hurting from walking bend forward, because of the leg with TKR was now 1 1/4 inch taller than my non TKR Leg.
It shows bugle and a tear at L4, L5 S1.
My knee is clicking and still hot and swelling, causing me to walk with a stiff leg after walking for ten minutes, the spams are so bad.
The Doctor put me Amrix 15mg once at 6pm and Mobic 15mg once per day. This Doctor is a Knee specialist surgeon and he did not do the surgery.
But he has really helped me. Try to hang in there and look at all causes of the pain.
Good Luck!

Hi Bill,

I forgot to tell you my TKR will be one year old on 12/31/2010. I have 120 degree flexion. I still
do leg exercise and they still hurt.

My leg length difference is not as great as yours. Mine is 1/2" longer in leg with TKR.

Like you, I developed spinal problems and had surgery Sept.'10 to fuse several vertabrae in the lumbar region. The procedure used was a TLIF or Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion.

Surgery was a success, but I'm now a human Doplar weather predicting machine! My back aches terribly with the cold. Knee problem continues -- no relief except for pain pills.:(

Had a bilateral TKR 7 months ago. Knees are doing fabulous, absolutely no pain at all but in my right leg I have pain in my shin, but only when I'm not using it and lying down. Very odd but can't figure out what is causing it. My doctor has left the area since my surgery. He did a great job on my knees though.

Recently I have had shin pain with left leg TKR 9 MONTHS post surgery. I nearly dropped from sharp stabbing pain, but maintained and was limping heavily. My other right knee TKR 5 MONTHS post surgery is okay. Would love to know others experiences and if there was a recall or fix? Dreamingjeanie@gmail.com.

I had a hemi knee replacement with two complete knee replacements on my left knee. The hemi failed nine months after surgery. Then the first total knee lasted a little over a year before I needed the third knee replacement surgery. With the third surgery I have a longer tibia stem in place. Now after almost three years this knee is failing but the worst part is I am now experiencing sharp unbearable pain mid-way between my ankle and knee which is where the longer stem from the replacement would end. Could that be causing such intense pain??? I had back surgery twice and felt 70% better from my back problem but this leg just won't give me a break. I have had trouble with the left knee for about 9 years now and just want some kind of relief. If anyone has any ideas please help!!! Thanks, wendy6315@gmail.com

Have the same problem, knee pain and shinsplints. TKR 2008 at Rush/Gitales. I do think it is a Zimmer. Sometimes knee feels like it is totally going out. Had Xrays, PT, Cortisone. What else is there? Maybe it is a weight problem as I have gained 30 pounds, for the past 8 mos I have had difficulty with ambulation.

I am post TKR only 5 days. Surgical site is good. Pain has been tolerable due to extreme pre surgical pain. But am now developing bone pain in shin bone, just below surgical site. Anybody experience this bone pain? Any hints on alleviating this type of pain? Pain meds don't always cut it. Thanks.

If you are having a burning pain it could be nerve pain. If that is it there is a medication that can help. I was put on neurontin. Good luck to you with your recovery.

Right now I am suffering horrible shin pain and have the same problem as you....knee is extremely hot and horrible pain when rising from a seated position. I am just at my wits end. The pain is just more than I can handle at times. Hope you are doing better and that you get this message to let me know how you are doing.

I came onto this sight because I am have shin pain. I had a TKR in my left knee approximately 4 years ago. I am 54 years old (almost 55) My quality of life was terrible because I had bone on bone. I still have bouts of pain and swelling in the knee Occasional loud knocks, but my surgeon says I am a model knee replacement. I do notice that the pain is more prominent since the change in the weather. Your replacement is still considered new. it took me a year before i felt better and swelling went down. All in all I still feel better than before surgery

Second TKR right leg after 5 years 2/2013. Left TKR Oct. 2012. Right leg shin pain started with increased excerise. I know from this site not to have my complaint ignored - I am not alone. Also developed back nerve problem three years after first surgery. I told doctor several times one leg was longer than other. There seem to be common side affects that don't tell you about.

Developed severe shin pain 4months after 2nd TKR on same knee. Nuclear stress shows heavy inflammation but no stress fracture. Dr. Thinks that screw going into tibia is not thick enough causing to much play in the bone. My options is a third replacement or live with pain. Has anyone experienced this?

had TKR in right leg 11 months ago. Could never walk properly without pain. When got second opinion then came to know that TKR leg is 2 cm larger than the left one.Is it natural side effect or due to negligence of the doctors which is not excusable. I am 59years old. Life has become miserable.

I had TKR on both knees in 2011. Two months after my right knee was done, Christmas Day, 2011, I developed severe shin splints in the right leg. I have had them off and on ever since. I had a severe knee infection this past November in my right knee and was hospitalized for 19 days. They irrigated the knee joint and replaced some of the parts. My shin splints continue to this day. I can literally be fine one minute, without any pain and the next moment, I get such a severe shin splint that I can't put any weight on my leg. I never know when they are going to happen, so never know when to have my crutches handy. It's horrible. I've had ultrasounds, x-rays, an MRI and going for a bone scan in July. Though my knees are relatively pain free, I am experiencing pain in my shins, that, had I known how bad they would be, may not have had the knee replacement....it's that bad! I'm at a loss at what to do next.
