Hi,
I had my TKR, left knee, the 28th of April 08. All went well except for these huge blisters near my scar area. They took awhile to break open and drain. Used meds to clear up, but I will have some very large scars from the blisters. Has anyone ever heard of this? My doc said that they don't know why it happens to some people. And it willprobably happen on the other leg! This doc is super..the best in the area. I did alot of research and had many questions for him before surgery. I do trust him and will use him again, but blisters again?? Yuck, to say the least!
Thanks....

Amonra,
Vis a vis blisters and the thought of having them on your second surgery, it may not happen!
I had them with my first TKR, two massive ugly seeping wounds, and the discoloration is still visible to me (although, not so much to anyone else). The blisters are the result of your dressing, which rubs the skin and causes blistering. Often, but not necessarily, agitated by the continuous passive motion machine movement. On my second TKR I did not experience blisters at all. However, on the negative side I did have a huge hematoma! which was very unpleasant and I have to say far worse than the blisters! Altogether these horrors are small by comparison to the big picture. Let's face it, this surgery, no matter how brilliantly executed, is still a major assault on the body. If it means you can walk and continue life relatively pain free it's a good thing! Cheers! Joon[

Hi-
I have a few questions for you...my husband had a reconstruction after his replacement, and now has blisters on the scar area as well. What meds did they give you for this, and how long did it take to heal? Also, did you have staples and was the blister smaller before they removed the staples? Thanks so much for your help!

Hello again,
They gave me Silvadene for the blisters aka wounds. I would change the dressing daily, clean the area and then redo the med and bandages. It took about 2 to 3 weeks for all the skin to fall off so that I no longer needed the dressing.
I did have staples, but my blisters were not on the staple area. It's been a few days over 2 months and I'm doing great...no cane or anything! Although I do admit that I've worked hard at rehab before and after the surgery. I'm having the other knee done in Sept. and can't wait to get it finished.
Sorry for the long delay in answering.

I also had tkr on 21st june 08 and i came out in these very large blisters. My blood was not clotting either so had to get platelets up. Sounds like this is very common, is it the dressings that they use.

Howdy! I had blisters after surgery on March 28th, 2008. They are called traction blisters. What caused mine were an allergic reaction to steri-strips. Try having your doctor not use them on next knee replacement. I am almost 4 months out of TKR and experiencing BAD pain on top of calf muscle on front of my leg. I have been release by my ortho one month ago and back at work. Also, I am experiencing tight band feeling around bottom of my knee. I do work my knee out at my gym 4 days a week. But now ice is not working on calf, presciption motrin not workin..its just so painful...ANYBODY ELSE EXPERIENCE THE CALF OR TIGHT BAND FEELING?

i too had large blisters on my right knee tkr in 8/06 .my doctor did not took it seriously and did not explain . but i suspected that it could be due to some kind of allergic reaction from tapes or any pre op chemical treatment .
i punctured them with a sterile insulin needle to drain out the fluid . they dried out in 3-4 days leaving discoloration of around the knee . all i did was to apply regular lotion after the shower . now i am completely fine

My leg was covered in blisters from the knee down to the ankle. I came out of sugery at approx 1.00 pm and by the evening they had started to swell up very badly.I do not believe they were caused by the Iodine wash that they put on your leg as there were no blisters above the knee only below. I think it may have been caused by the dressing being too tight restricting the blood flow to the lower part of the leg.In the next 6 hours they added two more lots of dressing as it was leaking blood. This further restricted the bllod supply to the lower leg.Hospital did not seem to know what caused it.I have had four lots of joint replacement surgey over the last 6 years and this is the first time this has happened. The sugery took place on the 26th of Sept. All the blisters have now burst and most of them are now dry.I have a tight feeling at the back of the calf.Knee replacement went really well, managed over 200 yards today.

I had acl reconstruction surgery and medial meniscus repair about a week ago. Everything has gone well so far. I have two incisions and three holes in my knee which are healing nicely. I do have a HUGE blister on the back of my knee. It's also bruised. It is no where near my scars but almost hurts worse than the knee itself. Any answers???

I was freaking out because my mom developed a HUGE blister on her left breast. It's the size of a golf ball....has this happened to anyone else after breast reductions? or any operation on the breast for that matter? The doctor says don't see emergency unless it gets to be the size of a fist. I contemplated popping it but i don't want to mess her up even more....

Generally, most blisters I run across with patients if they have them are an allergic reaction to the taping/bandage that was used after surgery and/or during your hospital stay.

they will clear up on their own in time.

My husband had a TKR and developed a huge blister on day 1 post op. Now he is healed, but has pain in the top of the calf, as you are describing. Did you ever find any reason for this or get any relief?

I had my TKR 3 weeks ago today (12-9). When they took out my staples yesterday, they put steri-strips on. Within 8 hours I had to remove the steri-strips. I had horrible itching, red-swollen burning skin where each steri-strip was and a lot of blisters. Within a few hours after removing, the blisters spread and started breaking open and leaking. I am putting pure Vitamin E oil on it. The itching and burning is much worse than therapy exercises. But, I am hoping that this does not lead to an infection. Has anyone heard of this type of reaction leading to an infection???

I had a total left knee replacement through the Edmonton Replacement Clinic. The surgery took double time due to extensive work requiredto move and reuse existing knee cap. You cannot imagine the "Fracture" blisters I am suffering with. I have 4 or 5 2" by 3" blisters 1 1/2" deep and dozens of "amber" jelly bean size ones and a chain of smaller ones down the staped scar line. I have had over 20 knee surgeries and never this. I am praying "Home Care" gets me through this and I dont get an infection. These blisters are nasty and a burden to physio.

I had the same all over one arm post surgery. Have your self tested for gluten intolerance. Celiac sufferers will blister following surgery exactly as you have described.
