knee pain after a knee revision

Here I am again...knee pain continues now that epidurals ( for the herniated discs in back) have worn off. I also had the "turned in foot" when I walked, but have worked so hard on that at therapy, basically learning to walk again like a 2 year old. Just when I think this revision is finally starting to heal, my thigh pain returns. Still have trouble doing stairs as the leg is just not strong enough to do it without holding on to both handrails on the stairs. My revision surgery will be 2 years old on Sept. 1st. How discouraging. I would get another opinion, but I don't think I ever want to have another surgery if I can help it!

I've posted here before.I see the doc the end of te month.I still can't bear weight on 2nd tkr on the same leg. Its not improving. what can i ask for as far as pain management.Acupuncture? any thing?
i cant do step.I couldnt sit in theater cause knee wont bend in enough.is there a way to get rid of scar tissue so I can bend my knee fully?orthoscopicly?I am at 85%rom thats it. this causes so many limitations. how can scar tissue reform on a new knee? I have had it .this group is the only ones that seems to have similar issues and understands me. from what i see ,docs always say it lookes fine.I dont want to hear that i want answers.any thoughts on what to ask for as far as weight bearing, pain manangement, and scar tissue removale to get back rom?

Jim...I am not a doctor, but my feeling is that more surgery, in any form, arthroscopic or more invasive, only irritates the knee more. My PT once told me that any procedure is seen by the affected joint as an injury. Inflammation sets in and the scar tissue prevents us from moving the joint, protecting it from further "abuse/injury". Have you tried water therapy? It is amazing how freely the knee moves in water. Even a hot bathtub can be helpful, but a pool is easier to get in and out of, at least for me. I still use ice frequently at almost two years post op...but my knee, after 2 scopes and a replacement and then a revision, is not a haopy camper. Sometimes I wear an elastic sleeve brace (from the drugstore) on days that it is particularly bad. Had company for dinner last night. The guy is a neurosurgeon and asked how the knee is doing? I said "it is what it is"...and he nodded and said that's about all you can say after a surgery did not have the optimal outcome for you. He, by the way, needs a knee replacement also, but has decided to think twice. Smart man! I keep hoping that I will wake up some morning and the pain will be gone. One can hope!

thanks judy,I am just fed up with the lack of mobility. i did use my sons pool this summer but it doesnt seem much different.I need to understand what scar tissue is and its effects. I cant seem to grasp why when they put in a new knee why it doesnt work. i had a succesfull one done in 2010. I am worried the infection returned. i had an infection on 2nd knee and they took my knee out ,did the spacer thing and it was put back in feb, 6months has gone by and i am worried it has returned cant do any thing normal like sit in a theater.or at a ball game cause i cant bend my knee enough to sit in an a reg seat. I am going backwards

Jim, I did some research online about scar tissue after knee surgeries. I have had 16 in all so I had to do something! It will give you the ratio of people that has major scar tissue etc. I am one in a large number that has major scar tissue, and THIS is what is causing the most pain in my knee. A revision was performed on my last June, 2011, and I still have major pain but I deal with it. I tell people all the time, you don't hear me complaining do you? This is NOT because it doesn't hurt, it's because I would be talking about it 24/7 if I did. My understanding is that scar tissue is very painful and either you let them scope your knee to clean it out or you have to live with it. I'd rather let them clean it out as this offers a few months of relief. For me, a couple of months virtually pain free is worth the surgery. I do my own therapy now as I have had so many, I know what I have to do to heal and walk! Wish I could help more!

Well thank Jim I will be seeing the dr. on Monday and we will discuss whether he is going in to scrape the scar tissue. I just can not take the pain any more and now my back is also giving me issues because my gait is so off. I am more tired of hearing they need to get me off pain meds and I am like what am I suppose to do. I am in pain on the meds can you imagine what it will be if I did not take any. I can not walk longer than 20 min without sitting down. I was a person who danced 5 nights a week what a let down. Only to be told I was going to be good as knew. far from it.

Nanlee, I can imagine the pain and frustration! NO the pain is NOT your imagination. After 16 knee surgeries, sorry don't want to disappoint you, I still have pain and also pain meds. I do hurt every day but I traveled 200 miles this last revision and finally got a doctor that is great! Too bad you don't live in Mississippi because I would highly recommend him! Dr. Merhle is one of a kind in my opinion! He specializes in those surgeries that will not be touched by another doctor. He did give me back my stability and I can climb stairs without assistance now. Am I painfree? No, but I feel at least I have most of my life back at least. He did tell me up front that with that many surgeries on one knee, the pain would not go away, but the stability would come, and it did. Really GREAT doctors are out there, you just have to search and find one like I did. Let me know if I can help in any way!

I had a tkr in 2006, never felt right, kept complaining it hurt, was told continually X-ray was perfect, but I kept complaining and 5 years later they did a bone scan and cement was loose in exact spot I had been complaining about. Had a revision July 2011 and recovery was horrible, had to have manipulation under anesthesia, and still have severe pain and am getting depressed because of constant pain and it makes my job difficult. And I have checked and my "parts" are not on the recall list. My left knee is bad but I won't do surgery on it, I want to be able to walk.

I had a total knee replacement in Oct 2010. Even after P.T. I was having a lot of pain. I kept telling the Dr.about it but all he would do is x-ray and proclaim it alright. This went on for just under two years, I finally insisted on a bone scan which indicated there was loosening of the knee at both the femur and tibia. On Sept.10 2012 I had a revision surgery to correct the problem. I am now one month out of surgery and the pain is almost unbearable. Whenever I mention it to the Dr. it's the same old story; it's as though he does not believe me. I honestly believe I would have a much better quality of life if I could have my leg removed. I'm sick of pain and pain pills.

Well I visited this sight hoping to read some good news. Knee replacement June 2009, pain for 3 years after finally told dr I could not live like this any longer, bone scan done and discovered it was pulling away from connective tissue. So had TKR Sept 2012. Good bend and can straighten my knee but the pain is more than I think it should be 2 months following surgery.
I knee replacement on other knee in 2007 and it had not bothered me at all except for an occasional scar tissue flare up ! I am totally frustrated!! Don't want to live on pain Meds forever and I too want my life back.

Richard, I have told my husband the same thing about my knee. At this point with the constant pain my quality of life would be better without my knee! Went back to Dr. And my x-ray looks "normal" so they can't really do anything. They did bloodwork to see if there is infection, and if there isn't, they want to send me to pain management to deal with this the rest of my life cause they just basically give up! I'm back in a knee brace after 2 replacements on my right knee. I have even had to resort to my cane. He won't do another bone scan. What do I do? His answer is a handicap plaquard, anti-inflamatories, and pain management for the rest of my life!! I'm only 47!

Good luck Jim...we are all thinking about you. Hope this will do the trick. My doc is kind of like Jill's...gave me a handicap card, pain mgt. etc. But I can walk without too much pain, just can't do stairs, climb up any snow banks, etc. Keep us posted.

Hi,
I had a total knee replacement jan 2011. Was in constant pain. Dr. told me nothing was wrong. In december after constant complaining, dr. said get another opinion. I actually had 3. THey all told me the Dr. put in the wrong size components. I chose one of the Drs to do the revision. Had it done 8/2012. It is now 4 months and am in horrible pain. Cannot walk for long. Don't know what to do. Any suggestions. Does anyone have any positive notes>?
thanks
