I have had that and the Dr. said it's normal. Also my Physical Therapist said it is normal. When did you have your knee done?

I had my TKR 12 weeks ago. In 2009 and 2010 I had Reclast Infusion for Pagets in right Hip to make the bone strong.(this also made the bones in the knees strong) Orthopedic Dr. had trouble during surgery because the knee bones are super hard.
This also caused my Peripheral Neuropathy to start back.(claw feet, pain bottom feet and toes) This is under control at this time.
Been in PT since Jan. My ROM is about 126-127
Walking 20 to 40 mins per day / riding bike some.
Still having trouble building quad. muscles at/ and above knee. After I walk I have pain on the right side of the knee with swelling.(quad muscles weak)Dr told my to plan on 6 mts. to year for total recovery. I like walking the beach, but sand is hard on the knees. I am getting better every week, but this TKR has not been easy. Good Luck !

I had TKR 21 months ago,and was doing very well until about 4 months, when I started to have problems with extreme muscle tightness in the calves, thigh and swelling from the knee down. Dr. said all the x-rays do not reveal any problems. I have always kept active after TKR such as physio, aqua-sizing, and strengthening exercises at the gym, and walking. Some of my activities have had to be curtailed because of pain now.

I had my right TKR 14SEP11. Not even one month later I had a closed MUA 11OCT11. I could feel horrible painful adhesions growing & stiffening my knee. Cycling is my sanity & everyday means of getting around(when I can). I was able to ride my bicycle by MAR2012 but only short distances(2-5k). 110ish Flexion/no prob with Extension. My knee felt as if I had a dead hot rock attached by over-stretched rubber bands, carrying around daily & sleeping, 24/7. On my PT's advice I saw my OS & then I saw two OS Specialists. Determining arthroscopic surgery to remove scar tissue sooner rather than later was needed. 1MAY12 I had bilateral arthroscopic ops, to remove scar tissue in my right knee & to 'tidy up' Grade 3 chondral tears in my left knee(1st left knee op). My left knee packed in due to overcompensation of 12 years right knee Femoral Chondral Defect problems.

Recovering has been painfully tricky to say the least. It is exhausting. I feel adhesions growing again. Last week I saw a third OS Specialist, Xrays show Osteophytes growing on top of my Femur bone front & on my Tibia/Fibia bones back. This Dr recommemded 'no pain' physiotherapy, lympatic drainage, Kinetic taping, & to let my knee -heal-. Also for me to NOT consider another arthroscopic adhesion removal op until at least OCT. My Xray shows my TKR prothetic in the correct postition.

Trying to understand Arthrofibrosis is frustrating. OS Drs disagree on how to treat AF. There is not enough known as less than 5% post TKR patients get AF. I have a Stryker T3 screwed prothetic which may have contributed to my knee forming adhesions & Osteophytes at a rapid rate.

I have Quad muscle atrophy, I feel like I'm turning into a jellyfish in chronic pain... Also, I have bilateral hip Tronchanteric Bursitis as a result of my altered gait. Ohhh, to be ACTIVE again, or just walk painfree!!!

It is strange that you were ok post TKR for 21months. Did you have an injury to your TKR knee?

I too swim, gym & cycle but this week/month I have to 'rest'.

No pain med works for me, targeting my knee(s) pain or hip pain. Ambien helps me sleep.

It sounds like it may be some kind of infection, I would recommend consulting your doctor. It could be something simple though that could be easily fixed. The only other thing I can think of is that it could possibly be Arthrofibrosis. It's extremely rare, normally only happens in 1% of all surgery cases however it can be serious. Here's some information I found on it that you can look over and see if it matches your conditions. I wish all the best to you.

I had my total knee 2 months ago and still have the tight band feeling. I use the recumbent bike and the first movements after the "band" feels stretched, but quickly tightens. I'm not sure exactly why, but I'm trying to find out.

I have a Knew Knee fitted in Germany ( I am a ex Pat) I was operated on and 8 days later send to rehabilitation for 10 days Then after 2 months I had to go back into Hospital and have it Manipulated under Narcoses .This was late Dec I was given a Machine to use for 4 weeks which bends the knee Which I used every day about 3 times (sometimes fell asleep on it ) so now I am back to stage one I have problem going up and down the stairs and also get a sharp pain sometimes in bed when I turn over ! It is always swollen especially in the evenings !The left part of my knee is still numb and also the left part feels like it has been injected with some sort of filler (if you see what I mean) I am 60 years old and do not like being off work but it is impossible to work in this situation After the OP the Dr did say that they had damaged a nerve in my thigh muscle He said something like Femoral nerve it took at least 2 weeks before I could lift my leg from the bed .I also have very week thigh muscle and it is thin it looks like it has a Dent in it ! So thats My Problem I will be going to my German Orthopaed in two weeks time has anyone an idea what I should ask him or suggest

I had a total right knee replacement on 1 November 2013 (in Sydney, Australia).I have since suffered a lot with pain and extreme tightness. Perhaps it is nerve damage or a deep tissue problem I'm not sure. I have had 4 acupuncture treatments, which got the blood flowing better through my knee. My knee is now not as hot as it used to be...previously it was constantly burning. I find walking difficult and can still only do one stair at a time. My specialist said it could take 3-6 months or longer to recover. Has anyone found this to be the case, or should l just expect this tightness to be part of my everyday life? I am going to try to get back into my post- op exercise mode, with stretches and exercise bike. I also use a hydro pool for swimming and walking.

I had bilateral knee replacement 10 months ago and a nerve was "bruised" during surgery. I am now in worse shape than I was before with the arthritis. I cannot walk without a cane or walker because the nerve damage caused drop foot, which is now "drop toe" and has severely messed up my balance. I have swelling all the way from my feet up to my hips, and both knees and feet feel like a steel band is tightening around them all the time. I am in constant pain. I wish I had never had the surgury.

What most people don't understand is that the tight feeling is normal. It can be caused by Inernal swelling of the tissues, and more exercise will make it worse!!!!
Also, this is where they sutured internally, and that particular area takes quite a while to loosen up.

Ice, and elevate!!!! I can't stress this enough. Even at 6 months post op, overuse can cause this tight feeling..

They never seem to tell you that it can take up to a full year for all this to be healed.

The tight band feeling WILL go away. It just takes time and patience my dear.

The numbness is caused when they make the incision...it can not be avoided as the nerves there have been cut to make the incision. Some folks get the felling back again as the cut nerve endings reestablish some contact.

Don't fret, all this is part of recovery, and it will get better. When is individual to the person.

It is good to read the comments and to know that there are other people with similar problems...some even worse than me, unfortunately. I hope you can manage to find some relief, Cindy. That must be very difficult for you. Luckily my nerve pain seems to have vanished. My knee still gets stiff and tight, but I am managing to cope with it. I do hope the tightness disappears eventually. I've been attending a physiotherapist session once each week. He massages around my knee area for about 30 mins. The muscles are so tight and it is really agony during the treatment. However, I do feel it has made a big difference. He has also given me some exercises to do specifically to strengthen the muscles in my leg, above my knee.
