I am 69; fit but a bit overweight. I had a TKR of the right knee in July 2009, but after a year of considerable discomfort, my surgeon discovered that I had grown a spur of bone under the patella. He decided to do a patellar resurfacing which involves shaving off the under side of the patella and attaching a plastic button which runs in the trochlear groove.
As my other knee was very painful after doing all the work for a year, I asked the surgeon whether he could do both knees at once. He agreed to do the revision on the right knee as well as a TKR and patellar resurfacing on the left one. This was done on 16 September, just over 3 months ago.
I was out of hospital in 7 days and walking unaided within a week of coming out of hospital. Both legs were straight and I have 125 degrees flexion in each.
It all sounds good, and I am sure that the operations were a success, but I have a major problem with what is believed to be Peripheral Neuropathy.(I am not Diabetic) I get regular burning sensations just under the skin all over my body with the worst parts being my knees, arms, back and butt. My knees feel as though steel bands are being tightened around them and at the back of the knees I get a burning/numb sensation which become agonizing if I sit for a long time. If I walk or stand for long, my feet swell and my toes become numb.
I am concerned that I might be allergic to Titanium. Very little notice is taken of this by medical practitioners but a website at www.melisa.com suggests that up to 4% of people are allergic to this metal.
Does anyone else suffer from these symptoms?

I had TKR on my right knee on Nov 30, 2010. I have the same burning sensation around the otside area of the right knee along the cut, feel numbness and stiff. I have the same feeling as if there are still bands aroung my leg under the knee
I do not know whT TO DO
My surgeon tells me that it is going to take 8 to 10 minths to heal

I had TKR on my rt. knee on May 3, 2011. I am experiencing the same burning sensation all around my knee as well as down my entire lower leg. I still have a bruise on my calf from a hematoma that occurred post-op. Sometimes it feels as though my knee is "on fire". I am also experiencing the "band" feeling around my upper thigh and my knee. I had a nerve block when they did my surgery. The physician says it does take awhile for everything "to come back to life". I'm at a loss as to when I will see improvements in all this.

Had TKR on both knees 2 years ago. Right knee great but left knee has this burning sensation below the Patella after a long walk or round of golf and 'clicks' constantly. Consultant seems unconcerned but advises some more PT.

I had TKR in April still in a lot of pain, severe burning seems like it's on the outside of the knee where the incision is. I thought I was going to lose my mind I was in so much pain. I am now on some medication which helps but still have some burning just wondering how long this is going to last? Sometimes I wish I would never had this done, but hopefully it will get better.

Titanium is inert, and the body does not set up any type of allergic reaction to titanium. That is why it is used for so many medical devices.

That tight feeling is an indication of internal swelling. It is normal to have some compartment swelling even after months. Just ice and elevate. When you feel that tightness it means the knee has been overused. Too much walking, standing etc.. Always ice, and elevate when that happens. You may not feel that you have overdone it, the knee may not tell you immediately. But that tight band feeling is a form of swelling.

I had bilateral TKR 20 months ago, just found out that the part that connects to my kneecap is broken! The Dr. says it is a part malfunction/defect. I have an appointment for this week for him to check the other knee. Had the burning since I've had the replacements. I wish I had never had it done :(

I am going this morning and they will be testing me to see if I am alergic to metal. Its been over two years and I am still having trouble. My knees down to my ankles burn and hurt. I was having the tingling all over my body. The doc. I went to said my knee was lose and wabbly. He put me on a brace until I get the testing done for metal. I will know next week what he thinks is going on. The burning is driving me nuts and the tightness of the knee. My other knee is going bad.Wish I had never had it done. I have worried with this so much until I think it might be ulcers in my stomach. The only thing I can eat right now is saltine crackers. With the brace on, I haven't had that tingling like I did. It must have been loose enough to maybe rub on a nerve causing it. God is our only hope. God Bless.

BRENDA , you can tell if you have a metal reaction by putting silver/nickle earrings on & if your ears react, like ich/drain puss, then your allergic to metals.Good luck today, let us all know what happen with the doc. and your tests. dd
