I have a feeling of tightness around my knee; it feels like there's a metal band around it. And I have problems fully straightening my leg. I'm 7 months post op. Does anyone else have this? Does it go away?

I had/have the same issue and guess it is fairly common for total knee replacments. Fourteen months post replacment I had scar tissue removed. It has helped but that tightness has not completely gone away. (That was about five months ago.) Keep doing the stretching exercises so the leg doesn't get locked into a permanent bent position. Talk with your doctor about the scar tissue removal if it doesn't improve. P.S. the scar tissue removal was a 'cake walk' compared to the replacement.

Please help! For 3 days I have had a strange feeling around my right knee. It feels as if I have an elastic band around it and I have pain going up my thigh and down the back of my calf. Is this serious? Could it be a thrombosis?
I have not injured myself recently. Woke up and felt this tight restriction as if I had my leg tied in a position that was restricting blood flow. Any thoughs?

I am almost 6 weeks post bilateral and it still feels to me like I have the post surgical bandages on. No more tightness than this point post surgery but the sensation is creepy.

Susan-

I went to my ortho last week and tight band feeling around bottom of knee is caused by swelling in knee compartments. So I am back on pain meds and muscle relaxers for calf issue. It will take about 4-6 weeks to heal top of calf muscle. Since you are experiencing tight band feeling ice and lay off exercise to reduce compartmental swelling. Always stretch calf muscles prior to excercise. Riding the bike alot has caused my calf issue according to my ortho...we will see how it heals!

I too have the same feeling. Has anyone any idea what this might be?

I have a tight feeling above my right knee when I bend it. It feels like a tight band around it. I thought it might be a pulled muscle, but I'm fine walking. Only feel the tightness when I go to sit down, climb stairs, kneel down. Has anyone any ideas?

I had an ACL repair and a menicus repair. I am 11 weeks out and my knee still won't straighten,
-10. The doctor wants to go in a clean out scar tissue. Has anyone else ever had this done? How much pain did you experience? How painful was it and what was the recovery?

I am now 7 weeks out from TKR. Two weeks ago it felt like a tight glove around my knee when I tried to bend it. The PT therapist said is was scar tissue. He pressed and pressed on the incision (it hurt) but he said, ah, feel that. It felt like something gave. And the glove went away. No more tightness around the knee. Now I massage my incision everyday pressing into it, but not as hard as the PT guy (he knew what he was doing), and my flexion is improving. I am now up to 124.

I had bilateral TKRs 9 months ago. Like Sheryl I have the feeling of an ever tightening steel band around my knees and a painful tightening of the skin behind both knees particularly when sitting for some time. All this is accompanied by a burning sensation not only in my knees, but from time to time in other parts of my body (hands/arms, back, crotch and sometimes even lips and eyes. Sine my Surgeon told me there was no more he could do, I have seen every conceivable medico including neurologist, Rheumatologist, homeopath, acupuncturist etc but nobody can explain. Diet (too high Potassium) and nerve endings damage have been suggested but I do not have diabetes which might have suggested Peripheral Neuropathy. I can only stand/walk for a very short while until discomfort becomes intolerable and I have to sit down. Does anyone else have any clues. I would pay a fortune to find ot what was wrong and possibly find a cure.

Tawny, has any doctor suggested you may have RSD? Of the 6 doctors I have seen for my pain, 2 suggested I may have RSD but 2 neurologists say no. One of the symptons is a hot feeling.

My story:
I had left TKR in April of 2009. I developed severe arthrofibrosis and have had 2 arthroscopic surgeries to remove the scar tissue. It has helped the pain to some degree and I have perfect range of motion and flexion.
However, I have had one pain since the day after my TKR. As soon as the femoral nerve block wore off
I had a vice grip like feeling above my knee. Nurses, doctors, OS etc. all said that way normal and would eventually go away. Well,it has not! Nothing I take, say or do helps the pain. It wakes me up every night....about 20 times, and none of the 6 doctors I have seen know what it is. I've been to 2 local OS, one at Duke and 2 neurologists. I've had neucular bone scans, nerve tests, MRI etc and no one has a clue what this pain is. It has changed my life and not in a good way. Has anyone else had this continuing vice grip pain above the knee and/or know what is could be?

I am post-op 11 months left TKR and still have that vice grip feeling. I am now seeing a third opinion ortho who described my pain exactly how I was feeling - YES! That's it! And then she "I don't think it's your knee. I think it's the nerves in your lower back causing this." She sent me for an EMG/NCV (nerve testing) which pointed toward L5 radiculopathy. I have a spine x-ray on Monday Aug 16 which will probably be followed by an MRI to figure out what's really going on. Didn't have these problems with the right TKR in 2007, but this left TKR in 2009 has been an absolute nightmare. So, perhaps your vice grip is also stemming from the nerves in your lower back - they can sometimes be damaged during TKR surgery.
