Finally the FDA is doing something in the public interest. We don't want another Vioxx without proper research

The kidney cancer community was very disappointed in the refusal by the FDA to approve AVEO. The response was similar to other drugs which can be helpful, but the side effects were less difficult. If you cannot tolerate the side effects of a drug, you usually quit, and then the cancer can grow again. Typically the FDA will approve a drug that does the same as an existing--if the side effects are easier, so this came as a big surprise.
Since many of the newer drugs for kidney cancer are now showing effect with other cancers, there was also hope that the same would be for AVEO. That means that other cancer sufferers will not have the benefit of another drug. Don't forget that there is usually no way to tell which patient will respond to any single drug, so it is important to have choices. The FDA did not help the cancer community with this decision.
