Hello, everyone.
I am an herbalist and natural health counselor with a history of interstitial cystitis. In Chinese medicine, this syndrome is caused by "damp heat" and is treated with cooling and drying herbs. Use Poria 5 combination. In western herbs, marshmallow root, horsetail, cranberry, cornsilk, gotu kola, flax seed tea, raw blueberries, and other herbs. In your diet, avoid spicy foods, chocolate, tea, fried foods. Eat cooling foods like cucumbers, celery, dark leafy greens. If you are constipated, take a good herbal laxative with fiber, as constipation aggravates this condition. MSM and glucosamine, quercetin and a terrific chinese combination called Golden Book are great for strengthening the bladder and helping with urgency.

This is a question regarding the post from Adair. Where can you get the Chinese herbal combination you mention for IC called Golden Book?
Thanks!

There is also another Herbal Supplement that is very trustworthy and has been around for many years. They are part of the fortune 500 and very reputable. I take them for my Interstitial Cystitis, but they are also very good for many other diseases, including asthma, allergies, fibormyalgia. Please feel free to visit there website www.reliv.com . Or google some of the comments that others have said about the product. Like I said It has done wonders for me. If you have any questions just feel free to email me at [email protected]

Good Luck,
God Bless,
Jennifer

Thanks Adair and Jennifer for the great advice on natural alternatives. I just got IC one month ago, but have already had much better results going the alternative medicine route. Two separate chiropractors who use herbs, nutrition and supplements have told me they have cured IC through natural methods. So I'm trying their suggestions, and we'll see what happens.

One thing that seems to be working already for avoiding the pain is to avoid gluten.

I've always been a fan of chinese medicines, but cranberry is a major NO-NO, for ICers. Also what "other" herbs are in the Poria 5 combination?

I am so happy that the natural alternatives are working for you. I am not sure what your doc has you taking but if you are interested in knowing more about the product that I am taking just let me know. I promise that I will not try to get you to sell anything like most other people try to do on the net. Just trying to help other people with the same problems that I have. Once again I am so happy for you and hope that all is still going well.

There truly is hope for IC patients. My daughter, now 22, suffered for four years before we finally got the diagnosis of IC. She did everything on the market at the time, finally doing the 9-week bladder instillations at Vanderbilt Hosp, which did not help. Her life was miserable. I finally found Dr. Russell Roby, in Austin, Tx, who believes that so many of these things are caused by hormonal imbalances and he successfully and regularly treats IC patients. We went to him, and he placed bio-identical hormones under her tongue, and instantly her pain was gone. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Her pain (7 out of 10) went to "0" within seconds. Do yourself a favor. If you suffer with IC, that is needless suffering. Please check this out. That was in January, 2006, and she has since married, graduated from college, and is living a full, normal, and very productive life. Please don't think this is a hoax or voodoo. There are sound medical principles that are in play here. Please go to www.robyinstitute.com and read up on what he does. It was a miracle that we never thought we would find. Karan

Has anyone else had experience with Dr. Roby?

I've seen advertisements for him so I checked him out and he has all kinds of actions on his medical license for misleading people and fraud. You should look him up on the internet. Just do a google search. But I've found that acupuncture and herbal remedies seem to work the best for relief from interstitial cystitis. Unfortunately there is no cure yet as Roby claims there is.

Try www.dr-er.com for these items. I now this doc treats IC and he has a store with professional items only for sale. You have to contact him via e-mail and he will send you an e-mail with instructions on how to get into the store and the codes to purchase what you are loking for.

I am glad that worked for her, however, like so many IC "remedies" they only work for a small percentage of people and this one is a real stretch.

I am glad that worked for her, however, like so many IC "remedies" they only work for a small percentage of people and this one is a real stretch. There are many cautionary tales out there and I would not hold out much hope for bio identical hormones having any effect for most IC sufferers. I have had this for 14 years and would have loved it had it been that easy to mitigate the problem.

I'm doing an IC diet, taking baths in uncooked oatmeal, washing every time I urinate, using hand warmers on my stomach, and taking aloe gel, fish oil, vitamin E oil, something Magnesium and Vitamin D3, lavender oil, peppermint oil, rosemary oil, vitamin B complex, Uva Ursi Leaf, acidophilus, irritable bladder and painful urination tablets (Swanson homeopathy by Dr. Barbara Hendel), bladder irritation drops (Natural homeopathic medicine), Quercetin & Bromelain, and Niacinamide - I know - a ton of stuff, but I feel WAY better. I have no hopes of being cured, but I do know I can survive it.:)

I have been on a yeast and sugar free diet for a year now - I am pain free unless I pig out on cheetos or sugar free ice cream. :) (No sugar or yeast in them... but must turn into to much sugar inside with too much consumption or something...)
