Hi everyone: My Dr. prescribed blood pressure drugs for me even though I have white coat hypertension. I take my readings at home and they are very normal. My readings at the Drs. office is another story. After having horrible side effects with Lisinopril HCTZ, Lisinopril without the HCTZ, my Dr. prescribed 10 mg. of Benicar. I only took it for 2 nights and was so suicidal that I was sitting here crying and thinking of ways to kill myself. Lisinopril HCTZ gave me horrible red, itchy rashes on my hands and feet, Lisinopril without the HCTZ made my skin from head to toe feel like it was on fire and tingling everywhere plus bad depression. My Dr. doesn't know yet that I've stopped taking the Benicar. Oh, and I forgot to mention that I got lots of floaters which started while taking Lisinopril and which I still have even though I've stopped bp meds. They're in the right eye and driving me nuts. I hope they go away. I know my eyes are healthy b/c I had a thorough eye exam done earlier this year. If my Dr. insists I take BP meds. even though I don't need them, I'll have to find a new Dr. My brother is a Dr. and he told me "do NOT take bp meds. for white coat hypertension". My Dr. thinks he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, so I can imagine how he'll react when he learns I'm not taking any of that crap anymore!!!!!!!
I can really relate!! A few years ago I went to my then dr. for a followup. I felt great and told her so. Before I left she offered me no less than 5 new prescriptions, one of which was for depression!! Needless to say she is no longer my dr:) I overheard her and a med rep talking about changing her patients from one med to another so she could get a cruise. No thought to how it would affect patients!! SAD!!!

Is there any substitution for Benicar? I don't mean generic Benicar( which doesn't exist), I mean something that works the same way? Thank You.

Why are you looking for a substitute? Are you having problems with the Benicar? There is lisinopril, but that is an ace inhibitor and that causes a dry cough, among other things.

Let me know.

This is now the second full week of being "off" of the Benicar 40/hct. My blood pressure has been higher, but that is also due to all of the "cheating" I've been doing over the Thanksgiving holiday. I did take 20mg of Benicar (still had some without the HCT) to bring it down a bit when my bp hit a high of 150/100. Of course my knees started to hurt again almost instantly, and the worst part of it is that the pain hasn't left even though I only took the med one day (and at a much lower dose - and WITHOUT the HCT). So, here I am guzzling apple cider vinegar (just purchased the Braggs), munching on celery (which I do like, thank goodness), and eating much less of everything else. My bp last evening was 135/88 - not too bad considering what it was up to. I've also started to drink like a camel - 64 (at least) of water. It feels like a gallon though, but I'm not complaining. I also received my aged garlic tablets (deoderized - for the sake of those around me!) which I started to take today, as well as some Hawthorn berry (the liquid elixer) as well as the tablets. I also purchased some celery seed extract, as well as L-argine/L-ornithine combo. I'm going to introduce each one into my routine CAREFULLY each day, being sure to monitor my bp at least 3 times daily.
Anyway, I'll keep you posted with my results. Stay healthy, and I'll talk to you soon.

Cheryl..........
I have high blood pressure too, and have tried all the pharma sudicals from hell.
I am taking the Hawthorn berry caps/3 twice aday for the last 4 weeks but my bp is not as low as I want.........135/85 even with a 25 mg water pill. And 2 caps of cayennne 500mg/90 000 units that are burning a hole in my stomach for 4 days but will go till the end. Let me know what kind of Hawthorn brand please and do they work? I hate the pill companies too, they are slowly killing us..........take care

How long does Hawthorn take to bring down your blood pressure? I can't find anything on the net.
Does anyone know? Thanks.

Diovan is in the same class and is the market leader. It is stronger, safer and has alot more data for all the bad things high blood pressure can lead to like heart attacks and strokes.

has anyone had upper abdominal pain due to Benicar? I was on it for 2 weeks....bp was great...but I started having dypepsia...went to a gastro and had an endoscopy. I had gastritis. Started taking Nexium, but pain still there. I've read benicar can cause gastritis, dyspepsia, etc, but the doc said he never had a patient with this kind of pain from benicar.
Any thoughts?
I am currently experiencing dyspepsia on Benicar 40 mg. Controls my BP very good, so I'm going to try to cut back to 20 mg to see if it relieves the pain, otherwise, will have to go off it.

I too developed gastritis and small ulcers. Had an endoscope, never connected this problem with benicar. I have done a lot of research on this drug and have never uncovered this side effect. Have been on it for two and a half years with hct. Did have to lower my dose about a month ago since pressure readings were way too low. Now on 20mg. with 12.5 hct and pressure readings in the ll7/56 to 123/65. Let me know what your doctor says.

My husband is on 20mg of Benicar and 100mg of Atenolol. He has been on the Atenolol for 8 years. He had a horrible time with Hydrochlorothiazide and his doctor put him on Benicar (a year ago) instead. For awhile it was great, almost no side effects. We did find that if he drank any alcohol he would seem "drunk" after one serving, and he is a big man. In the last few weeks he has been getting headaches everyday at the same time. He is also sleeping more and has a slight hand tremble at times. His BP also seems to be up and also very erratic. Anyone else with these symptoms?

I HAVE BEEN ON BENICAR FOR SEVERAL MONTHS, EXPERIENCE SEVERE BONE PAIN, CRAMPING AND FOOT PAIN. I ALSO HURT MYSELF MORE WHEN WORKING OUT. I AM MENTALLY CONFUSED. I ALSO HAVE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS AND FIBROMYALGIA SO I DON'T NEED ANY MORE ACHES AND PAINS. MY DOCTOR TELLS ME ITS IN MY HEAD. MY BLOOD PRESSURE IS OKAY WITH IT, BUT THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING ELSE OUT THERE.
AND YES, I HAVE GAINED WEIGHT WITH THIS MEDICATION.

I started on Benicar 20mg 1 week ago. I immediately started feeling fatigued and started to get this severe left sided jaw pain that has gotten so bad that I cannot sleep. It feels like someone broke my jaw (very intense) and only occurs when I lay down. After about 5 minutes the pain sets in. I realized if I sit up the pain subsides in about 15-20 minutes to a more tolerable sore jaw. My BP has only dropped to 131/73. I was on Bystolic 5 mg and doing fine without any side effects. My new internist said it was the wrong BP med for someone with Asthma and Hypothyroid. Bystolic kept my BP around 120/70. I miss it and this Benicar is driving me nuts!!! Any one else with this severe JAW PAIN? OUCH!!!

14 days I called and told my doctor that my blood pressure had elevated to 130/90. My doctor put me on Benicar (20 mg). With this medication, I felt tired and chest tightness daily. Day 15 I decided to replace the blood pressure medicine with 30 minutes of exercise, prayer, yoga and foods proven to help lower bp (anything with magnesium, potassium and calcium). At this point, I rather change my lifestyle than deal with an unpredicate pill(s),

I am having jaw pain after only three weeks on Benicar. I wasn't sure what the reason was but my Dr. said it couldn't be the medicine because i hadn't been on it long enough.

Since taking benicar, I have become three inches shorter, I have lost my erections, my hemorrhoids are worse, i have a cough, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, red testicles, swollen toes, chest pain, i have lost all of my teeth, my breath is bad, i have lost my all of my hair on the right side of my body and the hair that remains is now a deep orange. I can't get a date, my lips tingle and it is all because of that damned benicar.

I certainly will let you know. I hope it works for you not taking the dueretic. How much Benicar are you taking? I was taking 80 ml at one time and the doctor said why are you taking so much? I replied because that is what you perscribed. Then he cut me back to 40. Instead of quitting I thought cutting back to 20 but then I decided no I was going for all or nothing. If you would like to write me and talk it might be easier. takenpictures4fun@yahoo.com Other wise I will check in here and find you. My BP is 154/88 Today it was lower but night time it seems to flair up. Talk to you later Wantabe
Hi Wantabe,
I find your post very interesting...I too HATE taking drugs. Just started on Benicar 2 weeks ago and everything in my body I attribute to the new drug. How are you doing? Did you have to go back to some kind of pharmacutal help or has the natural way worked? Some of your numbers worried me as mine were the same for the past few months, hence trying the benicar. Thanks.

I am a Critical Care RN for 30 years so I am very leary of some of these posts where people have supposed side effects that in no way can be attributed to this drug. These usually are people who claim to have side effects to just about everything and anything. We see these people all the time in the hospital. I'm not saying people don't have many of these problems, just that they in some cases, are totally unrelated to the drug.
I take 40mg of Benicar daily ( for 2 years) along with 3 other antihypertensive medications. They all have minor side effects.
The 2 worst I have experienced on Benicar are rapid heart beat and upper back pain.
I cannot take the full dose (40 mg) of Benicar all at once so I divide the dose in half and take 20mg twice a day.
If you are just starting on this drug, ask your physician if you can start taking it in smaller doses first and titrate it up to the full dose over a few weeks. This can minimize the S/E as your body gets use to it.
This is not the perfect drug, but if it becomes tolerable, it is worth it. Sustained untreated hypertension has many adverse side effects on your body including heart issues, LVH ( left ventricular hypertrophy,( enlargement of the left side of your heart and can over time, seriously affect your kidney function. Benicar along with the other ARBS, is also renal protective. Ask your physician about this. All medications are not for everyone, it takes a lot of trial and error sometimes, but it pays to be realistic with regards to side effects, don't attribute "getting shorter" or some of these other things,as one person did to this drug. That is ridiculous.

Go ask your doctor for Diovan. Great drug. I take it now and no side effects.
Please don't do this. Diovan has made my mom so ill that they pulled her off this med. There is also a lawsuit trying to get Diovan off the market. Don't do it!!
