Cadillac is really close for me, who was the doctor, what procedure did he do? I had not heard that anterior is done in Cadillac, MI

Dr. Bizzigotti (Cadillac Orthopeodics)does a procedure called anterior lateral - top of hip on the side. Small incision glued shut. My husband had very little pain and was up moving and home quickly, Looking at the procedures I think it is similar - my husband never even needed a bandage, Check it out - it you don't like it you can always look elswhere. He is close and takes insurance

Hi I'm an 18 year old and was diagnosed with juvenile dermatomyositis at age 16, I was given steroids to help, but at 17 I acquired avascular necrosis in both hips. In about a month I will get bi lateral total hip replacement, and I am choosing to get it the anterior way, I was hoping to know what the scars might look like a couple months after surgery? And what activities can you do after surgery? Are you able to mostly do everything as before? And how long did it take you to recover?

The scar is small...and located on the front of the thigh.(around 4 inches)
It took me well under a month to do mostly everything that I was doing before. I was driving after a couple of weeks.

I did Superpath and would be happy to send you a picture. It is less invasive than Anterior.

From what I can discern the difference between Superpath and anterior is that the ligaments can be stretched during anterior and that with Superpath this does not occur. Whether to travel across several states to get to a Superpath trained surgeon for that bit of difference--since those with anterior do not seem to have issues at all--is a personal decision. But make sure you understand the difference in outcome versus the cost and stress of the travel. As far as I can tell, recovery is the same.

Since Anterior is a little bit of a compromise versus standard surgery I would not want to stretch it any further by using superpath. By that I mean the fit and finish is more in the hands of the surgeon's skills as access is not as open. I am having mine done in three weeks by a doc who has done over 1800 Anterior Jiffy Hips so I trust his placement skills. BTW he seemed vaguely aware of superpath but did not seem particularly impressed. I have heard so many good things about this doc that I feel comfortable I have made an excellent choice.

Anyone at all out there have any recommendations for a doctor in Pittsburgh who successfully performes anterior HR? I live closer to Pittsburgh than Cleveland, and already had unsuccessful arthroscopic. I have impingement in both hips and will need both hips replaced. Only early 50's - but lifestyle has really suffered due to the limitations imposed by bad hips! Looking forward to any and all input!!:)

Judy, I went to a seminar that is included as part of the surgery. It is at the Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News. There were about 50 people there who are getting hips or knees replaced by Dr. Carter and one of the others in that practice. Make sure you attend this when the time comes. It is really an impressive operation. Make sure you attend when the time comes.

I had the Superpath done in south Florida by Dr. Elvis Grandic. I was amazed how quickly I recovered. No cane or walker after only two weeks. Super path definitely the way to go.

"I'm starting to wonder if they are basically the same procedure. I'm starting to think that superpath is a marketing ploy."

They are not the same as Superpath does not require a $100,000 Hana table. The marketing is done by the equipment manufacturers. That's why Superpath is not very common, it doesn't have corporate money behind it. Dr. Murray in Boston only trains one fellow a year.

They are very similar. i had the option of doing anterior locally in Atlanta but chose to drive 4 hours to Nashville for Superpath and have been very pleased with my results.

My husband suffered from terrible arthritis in his hip for over 2 years. He was having pain every day and not able to pick up and play with our little baby much at all for the last 6 months. We found out he needed a hip replacement and looked around for a while. We decided that he should see someone who did the direct anterior approach -- and we got a great recommendation about the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic in Virginia. Apparently (now confirmed after using the web!) Anderson has been around for over 40 years and is known for joint replacements. They did over 2000 joint replacements at Anderson last year!

So my husband had a direct anterior approach done by Dr. Nitin Goyal from the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic in Arlington, Virginia. He went to surgery at about 8AM and was leaving the operating room at 9:15AM. He was sitting in a chair by about 2 PM on the day of surgery and was taking a few steps to the bathroom by about 3PM. That same evening he made two laps around the hallway! I couldn't believe my eyes. He didn't take a single dose of percocet all night (just tylenol and the anti-inflammatory!). He ate his full dinner the night of surgery, and the next morning was feeling great -- because he had gotten the first full night of sleep he had gotten in months. In the morning the day after surgery he was walking around the hallway and already starting to learn to go up stairs. By about noon he was very comfortable and had learned to use the crutches and walk up stairs. We left the hospital at about 2PM (we had a long car drive [almost 3 hrs!]) and wanted to skip traffic.

He is now about 4 weeks out of surgery and he and I are so happy. He is feeling so much better and he's back to doing things he hasn't done in nearly a year. Dr. Goyal and his staff were wonderful. They took care of us from the minute we came into the office. I really couldn't be happier about the care we received. I have my husband back and he's better than ever -- already walking without any limp, with NO precautions.

Thanks Dr. Goyal and thanks to the Anderson Clinic and INOVA staff!
