Karen,
HIP HIP HOORAY! Everything went great and I am feeling terrific. I came home on Monday (decided to stay a few days extra) and all is going great. As I told you before I was so scared because this was my first surgery. I told them I didn't want to see anything or remember anything. That is how is was. Never saw the operating room, never saw the operating table and don't remember the spinal. For all I know they could have put me on the floor to give me the spinal. There is relatively no pain a little the first day and then none. Just a tightness by the incision. Hardly took pain medicine. They start you on a walker and then onto crutches and then a cane. I came home with a cane only and have been doing great. I'm even getting itchy to move around and out of my apartment.
Anyway, good luck, you will be fine. If I can do it, anyone can! Keep me posted. If you want to talk I'm not sure how we could get in touch with each other do you?????

Regina, OK you can relax. If I made it anyone can. I came home on Monday. Stayed a few days extra which worked out well. This way I was more confident and got around much easier.
The surgery, although I was scared as you are went well. I told them from the time they wheeled me into the holding room I didn't want to see anything or remember anything. That is just the way it was. Never saw the operating room or the hana table. Don't remember the spinal.......I SAW NOTHING and REMEMBER NOTHING......Since my surgery was early in the morning, they had me off the bed later in the day, just to stand for a few minutes. There is relatively no pain just a bit of stiffness near the incision. I took hardly any pain medicine. Believe me you will feel so much better after the surgery you will be so happy. This is my third day home. I am getting around with a cane, doing lots of things by myself and feeling great.
Ask me anything you want. I will answer any questions you have. Please use me for all your concerns, I would love to help make you feel comfortable.
Best, Mona

Mona,

I am so happy to hear that you are doing well! Congratulations- you did it!! I haven't stopped thinking about you since your surgery. I wanted to post sooner but I didn't want to bother you with my nervousness. I went for my preop on Monday and have been a nervous wreck since. I spoke to an anasthesiologist and she told me that I would probably not remember anything. I am so glad to hear that you have confirmed that. Getting it straight from the horses mouth is certainly more reassuring. You sound really good and I really hope that things will be back to normal for you and your family in record time. I told the Doctor at the Hospital that I was going to be nervous and I needed something to keep my heart from coming through my chest and be able to sleep at night and she gave me Adavan ( I think that is it) I promised her that I would only take it if I really needed it. She also told me that Dr. Burak gives you something right away as soon as you get there and I will be sedated pretty soon after that. I hope this is the case as I am a bundle of nerves! I will probably be posting more as the week goes on. I feel like this forum is a life line that I need to hang on to to get through this! I have just one week to go and then it's my turn. I really am tickled pink for you. I hope to be talking to you soon. In the meantime I hope you are feeling better and better each day.

MONA - waiting to hear about your experience last week. Hope you are home and recuperating quickly. I had my preop this week and the big day is next Monday, the 1st. Still feeling quite calm, just having problems with the pain. Had to stop taking Celebrex last week and I think that's why the pain has intensified. I can no longer leave the house without a cane - in fact, for the preop yesterday my husband wheeled me around the hospital in a wheel chair. Would never have been able to walk all that way. Monday can't come soon enough!!!
Hi Karen,

I went for my preop on Monday, and did all the walking with a cane. Needless to say I was exhausted by the middle of the day. You did the smart thing with the wheelchair. I am not as calm as you are ( as you can see from post above to Mona), although, I will say that hearing from Mona, has made me feel a lot better. I will be thinking about you especially on Monday and wishing you the same good outcome as Mona had. I hope we will be able to keep in touch and support each other through this.

All testing done, blood donation done and I am told to report to the Hospital at 5a for my 730a Surgery. Looking forward to positive outcome as most have posted re anterior surgery.Have been informed I am first up for surgery...so it should not be delayed due to Operating Room issues.
I will provide update once I get home....

MONA - Good for you!!! I am so happy to hear from you and that you are doing so well. I am so looking forward to having this over with. I'm 67, but have been feeling more like 85 lately. I am usually starting to play tennis at this time of year and instead I got a handicap sticker for my car today. Should have gotten it sooner. Hopefully won't need it for long. Any advice for the hospital? Did you rent the tv/computer? I was going to bring my laptop, but was advised not to. I am just so thrilled that all went well for you. I don't want to put my phone # on here, but my email address is [email protected]

Hi Regina - I was looking for you at the hospital on Monday - we probably crossed paths - I just couldn't bring myself to go up to everyone asking if they were "Regina?" But since your surgery is on Wednesday, I will still be in the hospital and will ask for you.

I'm laughing because neither of you wanted to see or know anything. I'm taking my camera with me as far as they will let me. No, I don't want to be awake during the surgery, but would love to be awake when the wheel me into the operating room. We'll see.......

Karen,
You are funny.....taking a camera with you. Maybe someday I will be able to look at your pictures. I had a hard time looking at the CD Dr. Burak included in his kit.
For $10 a day you can have phone service, TV and computer access. I used my cell phone the entire time. There are a few different packages you can purchase. You will do all that right from your bed and charge it to a credit card. I am going to email so when you get a chance take a look at it. The days are coming down for you. You will be so happy how much better you are going to feel.
Best, Mona

Hi Mona,
Thank you so much for offering to talk to me. My email is [email protected] Please email me yours too and I will be able to put it into my address book so it doesn't go into spam. How are you feeling today? I certainly hope better and better. I am using a cane most of the time now. I am also having trouble sleeping again. I think it is a combination of nerves and pain. I am so hoping to get rid of both real soon. Will be looking forward to hearing from you.

Karen,
I used the wrap in the hospital. The ice had to be added every three hours. At first I thought it was a bit of a pain to use but it worked out. At home I am using gel ice packs (when I remember). If you have any last minute questions please give me a call.
What time are you being operated on on Monday?
Good luck, I'm sure all will go well. I'll put my prayers on high speed on Monday.
Keep me posted.
Warmest wishes
Mona

Age 64 Arrived home yesterday from hip surgery. Everyone was correct only pain now is surgical pain not hip pain. Still on the walker today possibly tomorrow then cane. Follow up with surgeon next week Tue 5/11.
Very good caring Surgeon in W PA- DR B Shannon.
Why would anyone want to have the "regular" hip surgery- when this type is available?

Ralph,

Glad your doing well ! I hope you will be as happy as I am with this surgery - I'm 8 months post op. I can possibly tell you why someone would not have this surgery - because their local surgeon won't tell them about it & they don't know about it. I had a relative that told me about the anterior & I did the research before going to my local surgeon. My local surgeon I was sent to wouldn't even tell me the difference between his procedure and the anterior procedure. I think as more people find out there will be more of the anterior performed.
Keep us posted on how your progressing !

Helen
